- Process overview
Short description of the translatewiki.net localisation process.
New language
- Someone wants to start a new localization project for language Xyz.
- At least the following information is needed (if not already available):
- A language code from ISO 639-3 or the Ethnologue website
- The language name in English and in its own language (for example 'German – Deutsch (de)')
- Should the language fall back to another language other than English? If so which? (Fallback is used when a translation in the main language is not present)
- Is the language RTL or LTR (written from right to left or left to right)
- Create account in translatewiki.net
- Request rights to translate at Project:Translator
- Create a Portal page for the language having the name Portal:Xyz if one does not yet exist.
- Add yourself as a translator on its /translators subpage.
Localisation
- Translators translate messages using Special:Translate
- Translators can provide localization information for MediaWiki (Includes: bookstore lists, date formats, number formats, grammar; translation for magic words, etc.)
- Most of these things can be translated in Special:AdvancedTranslate.
- Translators can test most of the translations for MediaWiki in real time and other features when asked.
Getting things into Wikimedia, other MediaWikis, and other products
- Translations for MediaWiki (except for those made through Special:AdvancedTranslate) as usually added to the source code within 24 hours. Within the same 24 hours, translations are usually live on Wikimedia web sites.
- Translations through Special:AdvancedTranslate can take a few weeks. If it's really important to you, it may be wise to request a commit on Support.
