[edit] Language names in local language
Hi, I'm contributing to the translations in Tamil language. I find that the names used for langiuages are incorrect and I want to rectify this. It is similar to the problem discussed at here. I searched MediaWiki translations and I'm not sure where exactly I've to make changes. Could you please help? thanks.--செல்வா 16:23, 30 April 2011 (UTC) (I go by the first name Selva).

- For example the names of the languages in my language here. Where should I make the changes to correct the names and to add local names for the untranslated/transliterated names? --செல்வா 16:47, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
- They come from CLDR. Please see FAQ#Language_names and use Support page next time. Thanks. – Nike 20:44, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

When will get the new version of FreeCol? I'm anxious to see it my translations.
Quando vai ter a nova versão do FreeCol? Estou ansioso para ver minhas traduções nela.
Exact date has not been decided yet. It's been coming for a month now.
I would like to have the release to start translating to Brazilian Portuguese, the game FreeCel.
You can see my request here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/freecol/forums/forum/141201/topic/4947603/index/page/1
I'm still a little lost in it, but soon get used.
Translate a words ("Show log file") to test and everything worked out here. It's very practical system, and even that could be implemented in other projects, like the game Battle for Wesnoth. Thanks for your support.
Traduzir uma frase ("Show log file") para testar e deu tudo certo aqui. Achei muito prático o sistema, e até que poderia ser implementado em outros projetos, como o jogo Battle for Wesnoth. Obrigado pelo apoio.
hi nike
can i get the admin rights to give translator rights to the new users.. thankyou in advance
https://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Narayam-gu/fi Tuossa tulee mielestäni väliviiva. Vai miksi poistit sen?
Noo ajattelin että kun eihän se ole mikään tietty translitteraatiotapa, vaan yksi joka on valittu, niin se olisi nimi ikään kuin "Microsoft Windows". Pitäisi tarkistaa miten muualla on tehty näiden kanssa.
Hei! --Pxos (talk) 14:21, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Yleensä kahden päivän sisällä.
Hi! I just discovered your project and I asked on IMSLP if they would be interested in a collaboration with TranslateWiki. Feldmahler replied that "Unfortunately I do not think IMSLP has enough programming staff to implement a full interface with TranslateWiki." (see full answer here). I'm not a developer, so I cannot offer help, have you guys helped some other project to provide support to your platform? IMSLP would be a great addition! :) --Micru 13:09, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
It is a standard MediaWiki extension, right? Why doesn't it use the standard way to do i18n?
Since I don't know the answer I forwarded your questions to Feldmahler. I'm sure he can provide you with better information than me. I'll repost here his answer asap.
Here is the reply by Feldmahler:
"I'm not entirely sure what Nike means by "standard". If he means having a separate i18n PHP file, then the problem is that it does not support user translations out of the box. If he means using the MediaWiki namespace, then the problems are (1) it is even less user friendly than the current setup, and (2) the database lookups are probably pretty expensive in comparison. It seems to me that the transaction costs of using TranslateWiki is proportionally much larger for IMSLP because IMSLP is not a dedicated software development team (or more precisely, is written by me alone), and do not have all the bells and whistles set up for such a collaboration."
What do you think, Nike? Do you think it is worth to look further into it?
I don't think he understands how the MW extension i18n process works. The first step would be to thoroughly explain how it works.
Hi Niklas,
we have UILANGCODE here (btw. where does it come from, codewise? Couldn't find the implementation) but there is nothing having a similar functionality in MediaWiki proper. Are you planning something like this?
I am asking in a context of having templates, or help pages, address users in either standard or zxx-formal speech, but there are more uses.
It's a local hack, intended for use in the sidebar for the lack of better solution - Special:MyLanguage is one candidate for replacing it.
Special:MyLanguage redirects to the main page at the moment. At least there is code to look at :-) Thanks.
It is used like Special:MyLanguage/Page name, and it goes to Page name/uilangcode if the page exists.
Yes, I had been reading the code and hit "save page" too early above.
Understood. Looks good for help pages.
If we were to use this redirect thing in template transclusions, that would mean to me have /lang templates for supported languages and a fallback template in the parent page, and modifying the parser to look for /lang subpages. That seems not easy and straightforward given the fact that there are many templates out there having a /doc subpage for documentation which can easily be confused with a language code subpage.

Hello Nike,
I'd like to add the documentation for this message. How should I do this? Is there any translatewiki convention?
Cheers
Yes. Please do it in the qqq language code. Thanks.
Hi there! Will you do another Mifos export/commit/push?
It's almost time for the "Elsie F" release... the first one with a complete translation set via translatewiki.net!
We're working hard to remove dupe message keys in Mifos messages!
You said that groups cannot be activated if there are any duplicate keys (ignoring case) in the Java .properties file, right? But then how were you able to activate "Mifos - Account Status" (out-mifos-as)? The Java .properties files for that group contain both accountStatus.loanOfficer and accountStatus.loanofficer.
Your right, it's not a blocker, but the behavior is undefined in those cases.
Ok. Will you import the remaining Mifos groups now, even though I haven't fixed the case-sensitive message key duplicate problem yet?
Even though the behavior is undefined,
- most all of the translations of these dupe keys are complete for Chinese, French, Spanish and Portuguese
- these messages should not change, we're in the process of rewriting the front-end anyway and are making new, better messages (complete phrases -- trying to eliminate all lego/patchwork sentences)
- if we need to force translation for one or two of these, we can do it outside twn.
I know it's not ideal, but fixing the case-sensitive message key duplicate problem looks like it will take many hours, and doesn't make sense since we'll have the entire front-end rewritten by July 1st.
Hi Nike, I have been working on Polish translation of FreeCol lately. Many missings have been translated. Could you please make sure it is included in the next FreeCol release? Thanks a lot
Will try.
Will you set up weekly commits for Mifos? ie: just commit/push whatever has changed in the last week?
We used to do something like this with our Pootle server, and it was helpful for translators to get up-to-date feedback on a regular basis.
Nike,
I'm trying to upload the final batch of Chinese translations for Mifos. They were translated offline using PoEdit. When I upload the file, I get the following error: File is not a well formed Gettext file in Translate extension format: Unable to determine group and language from file headers.
I believe Version 1.4.6 was used and not 1.4.2. Is that the issue? Can I manually edit the header and will it then upload properly? Any guidance is appreciated?
Thanks,
Ed
Try replacing the header with one from a fresh download, and check if the msgctxt tags were retained by your gettext editor.
Thanks Siebrand,
I did just that and just manually pasted a header from a fresh download and that fixed the problem.
Ed
Our header (using "X" tags) is compliant to the gettext standards. If you see your editor damage the header, please report that as a bug to the supplier of your editor.

It depends whether any other stuff is missing from the file. Are you sure it was exported from translatewiki.net in the first place?
