Select what to work on
The main page for overview of what still needs to be translated is the special page Language statistics. A form at the top of the page allows for entering a language code to report on. The link "Translation tool" in the main menu gives easy access to the page in the interface language that users have selected.
By default completely translated message groups are not displayed so that the displayed information only contains relevant information. Message groups displayed in bold consist of multiple other message groups. Translators can focus on completing a whole product, reducing selection actions, in particular in scenarios where multiple groups for a product are almost completely translated.
The information displayed are a message group name, which provides more information when hovering over it, the total number of messages in the group, the number of untranslated messages, the completion percentage, and the percentage of outdated messages. Cells with percentages are colour coded for easy identification of the status; red is much to be done, green is more complete. All columns can be sorted.
Lista mesajelor
After selecting a message group to work on, the translator is presented with the list of messages. Outdated messages are shown in red, with the source text in green. Depending on the view mode, only the translation, the source message, or both the source message and the translation are displayed.
Clicking a message name in the left column will pop up the translation editor in which the actual translation are made. At the top and at the bottom of the list there are navigation links that allow a user to browse back and forward in the selected message group.
Display settings for the list of messages
In the section "List of messages" the list view was explained. The page with the list of translatable messages also contains a form at the top of the page allowing control over what is displayed.
In the form, four types of settings can be made:
- <Translate-page-task>: this influences what will be shown. The default setting only shows what still needs translation. Other possible modes are to only show all messages, show translation and source messages above each other for review, export all message from the message group to a downloadable file for offline translation or export to the native format for testing purposes.
- Group: This can be any message group that is also shown in the page with language statistics, so that a translator does not have to go back to that page.
- Language: Lists can be displayed in any supported language. Languages in the language selection list are sorted by language code and language names are localised when available in the Unicode Common Locale Data Repository.
- Limit: maximum number of messages to show. Default is 100 messages. This allows users to display more or fewer messages if they need to.
Translation editor
The translatewiki.net translation editor uses many technologies to make translation with the browser as easy as possible. Some of the technologies used are display of translations in other languages, as configured by users themselves in their preferences, display community generated message documentation and documentation present in the source files of projects, syntactic checks and suggestions from Translation Memory, Google Translate and machine translation.
The number of hits in the Translation Memory is visualised using bullet points. Any bullet point can be clicked, launching a new translation editor, allowing translators to easily make updates for consistency to many similar text parts, instead of actively having to search for them. The maximum number of similar pages displayed is 24.
Translation preferences
Translators at translatewiki.net can influence the behaviour of the translation interface. The relevant settings can be found in the preferences on the tab "Editing" in the section "Translation options".
The possible preferences and their workings are:
- Assistant languages: This is a comma separated list of language codes. Translations of a message in these languages are shown while translating. The default list of assistant languages may depend on the used language. A dropdown can be used to select an assistant language. After that it can be added by clicking "Add to list". Manual editing of the field is also possible.
- Enhanced translation editor: This setting is enabled by default. Disabling will cause new pages to be loaded when clicking a link, instead of launching the translation editor in a pop-up window.
