MinecraftAustralia (talk)08:20, 24 July 2021

Hi MinecraftAustralia!

I can do it, but I have a few questions:

  • Are you going to bring in people who will actually translate into these languages?
  • There are several languages called "Kriol" in our databases. Can you please give an unambiguous name?
  • Are there any other websites in these languages? Or content in these languages on any other websites?

Thanks! :)

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)11:55, 26 July 2021

Hi, sorry I replied a bit late. The Kriol is called Australian Kriol or Roper River Kriol. There aren't tons of website in these languages but neither is there in half the languages on here so yeah. There are a couple of websites in Kriol.

Adding a new language, ISO 639-3: ale (Request)

Dear administrators! Could you add an aleut language (cyrillic script & latin script)? I'd like to translate wiki to it.

ISO 639-3: ale

Aleut language - Unangam tunuu - Унаӈам тунуу (ale)

Directionality: LTR

Scripts: cyrillic, latin.

(For MediaWiki): English, Russian.

Portal

Thank you. Best Regards

Thothsum (talk)10:21, 15 July 2021

Hi,

Are both alphabets used by speakers?

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)12:39, 26 July 2021

Yes, cyrillics used by aleuts in Russia, latin used by aleuts in the USA.

Translation checks

Please tell me, I've joined this project to help with Ukrainian localization. I can translate everything myself, and check other people's translations, but I cannot check my translations. How to deal with this, or do I need one of the Ukrainian users to write about it? DDPAT (talk) 19:37, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

DDPAT (talk)19:37, 2 July 2021

You cannot mark your own translations as checked. This is an optional quality assurance feature and it is not a requirement. But feel free to ask other Ukrainian translators for feedback.

Nike (talk)07:46, 5 July 2021

Am I prohibited from creating another account in order to check the changes made by me?

DDPAT (talk)10:28, 29 July 2021

Yes, that would be against the intention of the feature.

Why would you want to do that? You are free to do another pass on the translations and correct any mistakes you notice and to ensure consistency, but without marking them explicitly as reviewed.

Adding a new language, Ainu

Hello! Could the admins add the ainu language? I would like to translate in this language. The ISO 639-2 code is ain.

Ajeje Brazorf (talk)08:39, 20 July 2021

ah no it exists....

Ajeje Brazorf (talk)22:35, 25 July 2021

Ajeje Brazorf,

Actually no, not really. You can kind of publish pages that end in /ain, which you've recently done, but it's not properly configured.

I can configure it, but I have a few questions:

  • Do you actually know this language and plan to translate to it?
  • The translations you've submitted till now look like tests. Are they actual translations, or are they tests that can be deleted?
  • In which script do you plan to do it: Katakana or Latin?
  • What is the name of the language written in itself? アイヌ? アイヌ・イタㇰ? Something else?
Amir E. Aharoni (talk)11:28, 26 July 2021

I know the bases on ainu (months, years, some basical adjectives...). The translations aren't tests. I'll translate on the two scripts, katakana and latin. The language name is アイヌ・イタㇰ, because アイヌ means ainu people.

Ajeje Brazorf (talk)12:05, 26 July 2021

Is there anyone else who is going to translate beyond months and adjectives?

What is the purpose of the translation?

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)12:41, 26 July 2021

i'll translate some verbs too, basic vocabulary.

Change in Translation.

Hello, I recently translated many messages to Kashmiri language. However one user requested change in a specific translation from گَرٕ to اہم صَفہٕ. I changed the translation of two messages but got a error message while translating the third message. As its is the translation of the main page. The error message reads as Established main page translations cannot be changed directly as it would disrupt wikis using the old translation. You can request changes in Support. Link to change MediaWiki:Mainpage/ks-arab

Plurals - only two?

Hi. Help please with plurals. I'm limited to two. However we have names for plurals eg:

  • 1 day = diwrnod
  • 2 days = deuddydd
  • 3 days = tridiau
  • 4 days = 4 diwrnod / 5 dirnod / etc

How do I code this pls?

Robin Owain (talk)07:34, 12 July 2021
Similar problem where masculine nouns undergo an Aspirate Mutation after 'tri' (three) eg:
  • 1 car = 1 car
  • 2 cars = 2 gar
  • 3 cars = 3 char
  • 4 cars = 4 car / 5 car...
Robin Owain (talk)08:31, 12 July 2021

Usually you add the prefix -au (e.g schools = ysgolau) but in some loan words you just add an s (e.g wikis = wicis). Sometimes a w is added at the end of a word but not much as far as I can recall (sorry I’m using a swear word as an example of this; tits = titw).

MinecraftAustralia (talk)08:25, 24 July 2021

For which language do you ask?

Raymond10:30, 12 July 2021

I only translate into Welsh / cy.

Robin Owain (talk)12:47, 12 July 2021

I am not familiar with Welsh and don't know off hand, if there are strict limitations for Welsh in the system.

Have you tried {{PLURAL:$1|1=diwrnod|2=deuddydd|3=tridiau|dirnod}}. See Plural for more information.

On this page (a link to the Ukrainian language, since everything is already finished there except for some), a syntactic problem is admitted in the system messages. Can someone fix them in general?

DDPAT (talk)23:56, 20 July 2021

How can I downgrade Bable user information?

I'm not a native speaker of the English language. I don't know where can I edit or add it, I just create account and select English and Thai language. how can I change it?

MisterNobel (talk)12:54, 17 July 2021

Ajeje Brazorf (talk)08:46, 20 July 2021

Rename Javanese Wikipedia mainpage from "Tepas" to "Pendhapa"

Since I cannot edit this page, I'm requesting changing the Javanese Wikipedia mainpage from "Tepas" to "Pendhapa" per this proposal. If possible, could anyone apply this page as the main page without the title text (like the usual main page)? Thank you!

NoiX180 (talk)05:11, 23 April 2021

Hi NoiX180, as this is a poll on the jv.Wikipedia please edit wikipedia:jv:MediaWiki:Mainpage directly. Changing the translation on translatewiki.net would make the mainpage all wikis incl. 3rd party wikis witj jv as content language invalid.

Raymond14:56, 23 April 2021

Hi Raymond. Thank you for your suggestion. I've created the page, but it still show the title "Wikipedia:Pendhapa" and the tab is still written "Tepas". Any other suggestion to fix it?

NoiX180 (talk)02:06, 24 April 2021

See the manual: mw:Manual:Main Page.

Raymond12:22, 24 April 2021

Hi @Raymond:, I still seeing the old name (Tepas) on idwiki, idwikisource, idwikiquote, etc (?uselang=jv). This change from 2016 is also from jvwiki user. AFAIK, there is no poll for that change and the word of Tepas is an uncommon word for Javanese people. At least, the proposal to rename to Pendhapa have community consensus. jvwiktionary, localized MetaWiki, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons also follows the change, and probably the jvwikisource that still on creation, too.

/qqq in Persian

Edited by author.
Last edit: 14:38, 30 June 2021

User:Jeeputer recently created 323 documentation subpages with Persian translations[1], presumably by accident. In lack of proper English-language documentation it'd probably be better to delete these.

Pikne11:09, 30 June 2021

Hi Pikne, thank you for the report. I have deleted all wrong qqq "translations" of User:Jeeputer. I checked previously if the "translations" could be moved into /fa but a quick check shows that the /fa translations exist already.

Hello! In a lot of messages I've found a lint error, the <tt> tag. It must be replaced with <pre>, <kbd> or <code>. here's the full list.

Ajeje Brazorf (talk)09:29, 30 June 2021

2 different repos are affected: MediaWiki-Extension "LookupUser" and Translating:Tracker.

For LookupUser I have submitted Gerrit:702380, pending for review now.

For Tracker hopefully User:Martin Urbanec can do something.

Low quality translations by ArticleEditor404

User:ArticleEditor404 made a ton of low quality translations in yue and also a couple in ja. The majority of the yue translations by them are worth nuking.

Hello903hello (talk)21:02, 20 June 2021

Their translations in other languages should be checked as well, as they appears to have used a (rather low-quality) machine translation service.

Hello903hello (talk)22:39, 20 June 2021

Hi Hello903hello

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I would recommend leaving a message on their talk page informing them of the same. If things don't improve, feel free to leave a message on this thread again, and we can escalate this.

Regards,

After discussing with Niklas, I've left a comment on their talk page and decided to take their translator rights for the time being. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention.

Saraiki language ?

Hello,

Today I noticed that in MantisBT we have an unhandled language file 'strings_skr-arab.txt'. According to ISO 639, this is Saraiki language.

Looking for it here, I found 2 entries for it

Screenshot 20210607-101200.png

Following the 2nd link gives an error message: Sorry, the servers are overloaded at the moment. Too many users are trying to view this resource. Please wait a while before you try to access this resource again.

-- Damien08:14, 7 June 2021

Thanks for reporting this. This happens when statistics for a language are initially not available, but are being calculated in the background and then cached. If you try to access the link again after a few minutes you should see the statistics.

I'll check with Niklas if we need to improve the reporting here

Regards,

Abijeet Patro (talk)13:00, 22 June 2021

Code map entry was added for skr-arab, so the request is fulfilled.
