This message should be "Show differences", since the current message "Show changes", look very alike to the near button "Publish changes" or "Save changes", which can easily cause mistake: clicking the wrong button.

Ans (talk)12:41, 5 July 2017

Are there any comments?

Ans (talk)13:29, 14 July 2017

Or possibly "Check differences"?

dcljr (talk)19:08, 26 July 2017

Is there any progress on this issue?

Ans (talk)15:10, 16 August 2017

Apparently a Phabricator task would be necessary to make the change, if a consensus can even be reached about this, since English messages cannot be translated here, as alluded to ("one of the developers at the project concerned will change the message") at FAQ#Improving the English source message. I don't think this is actually the best place to discuss such a change. Try Translating talk:MediaWiki instead.

dcljr (talk)20:41, 17 August 2017

How to preview a message with $params?

I would like to view a message which has parameters, in order to check its syntax.

For exemple, MediaWiki:Notification-header-mention-status-bundle/fr has many imbricated magic words, it would be nice to test it, previewing a draft page.

Is there a template created for this goal?

Pols12 (talk)16:58, 7 September 2017

You can use the mw:int magic word on any page, is that enough?

Nemo (talk)17:02, 7 September 2017

Thank you for your answer.

Unfortunately, I can’t use magic word because it includes the "official" translation and not the last edit.

With the given example, today displays a message starting with "Parmi" whereas the last version starts with "Concernant".

Pols12 (talk)17:09, 7 September 2017

Maybe trying if the GENDER work or not? (assume that that has ) probably is useful

Liuxinyu970226 (talk)13:53, 8 April 2018

Neither int: nor Special:ExpandedTemplates is a reliable way to check how the message will work in action, especially for JavaScript messages.

However, if we assume that parsing will be okay and you just want to see the different versions, then I recommend Special:ExpandTemplates. Remember to set title to the full message title, so that correct language will be used for plurals, etc. and then use it like a template: .

The downside is of course that you need to know and give all the parameters.

Nike (talk)08:37, 10 April 2018

Thank you Nike. I didn’t know Special:ExpandTemplates.

However, I don’t achieve to give params. In the follwing code, params are not taken into account: .

The following code work: But, as I explained to Nemo, int: display the real message, and I’d like to test a new translation, not waiting for their daily export.

Pols12 (talk)15:06, 13 April 2018

That’s what I want. But int: only work for exported translation (at least 1 day old), not for the last edit of a translation.

Pols12 (talk)15:09, 13 April 2018

Hello, in which program or application can I view and edit a file for offline translation?

Patriccck (talk)16:08, 12 April 2018

A blocked editor created a new account

After was blocked here, he started making translation requests on Meta-wiki (, and also using an IP (

Now per I'm sure Headwikisponge12 user account belongs to the same vandal and you may want to block it.

Stryn (talk)10:36, 8 April 2018

Hmm, looks like that account was never created.

But now he is using User:Happy13241 (his message on dewiki).

Stryn (talk)21:02, 8 April 2018

Stryn, not read new comment. Other admin unblocking

Happy13241 (talk)04:40, 9 April 2018

Done by Amire80.

Stryn (talk)13:14, 9 April 2018

@Stryn and Amire80: please, in future ping Russian community members or even write an email to them about this. We are experiencing effects of that machine-translated localisation until this very day, so there needs to be more vigilance on the part of Translatewiki sysops. We can’t notice all and we can’t untranslate anything after this gets into official localisation on Thursdays, so I am grateful that you are banning them but it is not enough in mitigating the effect.

stjn[ru]11:25, 10 April 2018

The sign-up process is monitored by approximately 1.5 persons and none of them knows Russian very well. It is very hard to control for a persistent sock puppet who uses proxies to evade blocks. I have fuzzied all the translations made by this person. Let me know if I have missed some.

It would be great if your community could help us in any of the following ways:

Nike (talk)13:42, 10 April 2018

Why not considering CU?

Liuxinyu970226 (talk)15:01, 10 April 2018

It doesn't help with proxies, does it?

Nike (talk)08:49, 11 April 2018

Sorry for not answering quickly enough, thanks for responding to me.

This wasn’t a criticism, this is more of a regret that we are noticing the effects of this not quickly enough, although that person machine translates messages by hundreds and we could potentially do more about this if we’d notice this a lot faster. Translatewiki is still an ‘extra-territorial’ project to Wikipedia users and the like, so they don’t monitor the changes here even though it’s a very important project.

My original post was more about that, if such user translated obviously wrong text, the relevant translators could and should be notified to mitigate their wrongdoing. I’ll get to reviewing those translations later, thank you.

Accidental translation

Hi, While I translated Wikimedia:Xtools to Burmese (my), I accidentally translated about 15 texts to Marshallese language (mh). Someone with admin rights please delete those translations. Thanks.

Ninjastrikers (talk)08:40, 27 March 2018

Well, just fuzzy them, deletion of translations are pains in the ass

Liuxinyu970226 (talk)13:43, 8 April 2018

These had not been exported (because of export threshold) so I deleted them with Special:Nuke.

"Unknown variable $1"

Translated MediaWiki:Apihelp-query+imageinfo-param-prop from English to Korean.

The original source has "$1", but the following link says "unknown variable $1"

I am a bit confused. Can anybody help with this problem?

Ykhwong (talk)07:37, 9 April 2018

It's not clear to which message you are linking to. Please use the "link to this message" from the dropdown from the message name.

If you mean the one outdated message in Korean, please check the definition again. It's not the same what you linked.

Nike (talk)07:57, 9 April 2018

I've just discovered that there is difference between MediaWiki:Apihelp-query+imageinfo-param-prop and MediaWiki:Apihelp-query+imageinfo-param-prop/en. I had to translate the former one probably because I was taking the outdated English message.

Ykhwong (talk)08:07, 9 April 2018

Are you release the TranslateWiki mobile application?

Colville-Okanagan Salish

I'm brand new to this and just started a test wiki over at Wikimedia Incubator and need to start translating the interface. My ISO 639-3 code is oka. The language name is 'Colville-Okanagan Salish – n̓səlxcin̓ (oka)̓ . The language is written LTR and uses it' own variation of the American Phonetic Alphabet.

Thesaltflats (talk)04:56, 8 August 2017

And do you want fallback languages?

Liuxinyu970226 (talk)13:43, 27 January 2018

Sorry it took such a long time. I only noticed it now.

This language is available for translation now. Start here:

I also suggest reading .

Again, sorry it took so long.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)17:39, 4 April 2018

It is needed to use in the Hebrew translation for this message. Does this message support it? It is not specified in the documentation, but the French translation uses it...

Guycn2 · 17:26, 2 April 2018

@Tgr: thoughts?

Liuxinyu970226 (talk)10:28, 4 April 2018

It is used via Status class:

Unfortunately Status really depends on the caller to call ->text() or ->parse(). I am not sure what is the caller/catcher of this Status :(

Hi. Would somebody teach me how to change language name from "한국어 (조선)" to "조선말"? I couldn't find it in CLDR and MessagesKo_kp.php of phabricator. Thanks.

His last import was on friday.

Yes. An hhvm upgrade broke yaml support on Friday. I fixed it today by migrating to PHP7. That caused some instability this morning and some pieces might still be a bit broken. Please tell me if you notice something broken.

Request to create a new project

Wikimedia Research would like to map section titles across six languages (ar, en, es, fr, ja, ru) and we have everything set up for it. We're planning on sending an email to Wikipedia users who can help us with this mapping. Our email needs to be in these six languages and that's why we're requesting a new project here. Would it be possible for you to create a project for this purpose?

Bmansurov (WMF) (talk)01:19, 9 March 2018

Are you sure you couldn't do this with a translatable page on Meta?

We don't really "create" projects here, we just register l10n files from project's version control systems to this platform.

Nike (talk)11:18, 13 March 2018

Thanks for the reply, Nike. Meta makes sense.

Bmansurov (WMF) (talk)06:11, 15 March 2018

What about doing that as a Toolforge tool?

Liuxinyu970226 (talk)10:25, 18 March 2018

Liuxinyu, is there a specific tool for that or are you suggesting that we build one?

Bmansurov (WMF) (talk)03:16, 19 March 2018

Phabricator qqq pages are non-intuitive (IMHO)

When translating Phabricator, pages like Phabricator:phabricator-project-4917eb42b43b64f5/qqq doesn't offer me really much of context, although maybe it's just me.

MarcoAurelio (talk)13:55, 28 February 2018

Having those autolinked to the source code is work-in-progress. I believe there isn't proper human written message documentation unless someone writes it.

Nike (talk)17:24, 2 March 2018

Problem is that we can't be expected to provide good translations with bad documentation. I know it is not an issue of you nor from itself; just feedback that this should be fixed where appropriate.

MarcoAurelio (talk)16:03, 17 March 2018

I'm sympathetic, but Phabricator developers have shown very little interest for a good i18n and what it entails (Nike was even forced to design an entirely new process to suit their non-standard methods and formats), so the alternative would be no i18n at all.

Our hope is that with this collaboration they will learn to appreciate i18n and adopt better practices. If it doesn't happen, at some point we'll need to reconsider...

Seeing the edit toolbar duplicated in LQT

Edited by author.
Last edit: 13:21, 21 February 2018

Hello. Does somebody else see their edit toolbars (to put text in bold or italics, etc.) duplicated when they interact with LQT? I do. Thanks.

PD.: it's the enhaced edit toolbar the one I'm using, if that helps.

MarcoAurelio (talk)12:49, 21 February 2018

Yes I do.

Nike (talk)13:21, 21 February 2018

MarcoAurelio (talk)13:38, 21 February 2018

User notification should be disabled

Edited by author.
Last edit: 20:36, 16 March 2018

MediaWiki now also notifies users if their name is in the "summary" field.

Though, we really don't want to notify the previous author each time we revert a vandalism…

Therefore, the message MediaWiki:Revertpage/en should be updated from:

Reverted edits by $2 (talk) to last revision by $1

Reverted edits by $2 (talk) to last revision by $1
Od1n (talk)15:38, 16 March 2018

This is currently discussed on Phabricator:

Od1n (talk)16:45, 16 March 2018

Regardless of the fixing in Echo, I feel we could add the colon there as well for the future. But that's for a Phabricator ticket as well if people agree.
