Request for renaming a namespace

Edited by another user.
Last edit: 01:34, 10 January 2020

I would like to request renaming of the Template namespace on the Wikimedia projects available in Macedonian, namely Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wiktionary and Wikibooks, from "Шаблон" to "Предлошка" but still keep the redirects from "Template" and "Шаблон". The community on the Macedonian Wikipedia pays careful attention on the use of puristic terminology and therefore avoids or limits the extent to which words of foreign origin are used. While "шаблон" as a term derived from the German "Schablone" has been accommodated in the Macedonian language for a long time, the dictionary does also contain "предлошка" as a word of Slavic origin with exactly the same meaning. Importantly, this is not going to be the first case a Slavic language makes the use of this term, as the same namespace on the Croatian- and Slovene-language projects bears a variety of the same word (e.g. "Predložak" in Croatian, "Predloga" in Slovene). It is also not the first time a request for renaming a namespace on the Macedonian-language projects is filed after the File and Special namespaces had been renamed for the same puristic reason in the past. Thanks in advance.

Yes. We need to make this change as soon as possible. This needs the attention of @Siebrand:
Kiril Simeonovski (talk)10:06, 2 January 2020

Makes general sense, I can do it. Just to be extra-sure, do you have something like a community discussion about this?

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)15:59, 17 January 2020

Hello, Amir. Yes, the matter has been discussed by the most active editors, and we have had an agreement on it. The discussions however, took palce on meetings outside the wiki itself. Hope that's good enough. By the way, we already changed the interface via translatewiki here, so it says Предлошка everywhere and everyone's fine with it.

B. Jankuloski (talk)20:16, 19 January 2020

OK, I see. I'll do it.

Phabricator's discontinuation language

I have translated over 9K or 10K messages on Phabricator's messages, but I haven't seen Turkish language in Phabricator's preferences. Are they stopped to review the languages or the bot is broken?

Baran (talk)14:31, 10 January 2020

Hi Baran

I see that the strings that you've translated are exported out to the phabricator translations repository,

Once the translations have been submitted by translatewiki, they have to be compiled to a format that Phabricator understands. See here.

Regards,

Abijeet Patro (talk)11:23, 12 January 2020

Oof. Thanks for the information.

Baran (talk)21:57, 13 January 2020

I see that some updates were made to the Phabricator's translations repository but don't see Turkish as an option in Phab's preferences. Anything else we can help with here?

Regards,

Abijeet Patro (talk)10:24, 17 January 2020

If Wikimedia Phabricator added Turkish language on preferences, I would be appreciated it. :)

The special page giving the list of Supported languages (linked from the tools in the sidebar) no longer works. As well all subpages listing the users from one of the languages listed. Was it uninstalled unexpectedly, or disabled because a recent upgrade of Mediawiki caused was incompatible and the extension for this special page no longer works or crashes ?

Verdy p (talk)12:32, 5 December 2019

Please see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T234750

This is fixed now.

Delete page

Please erase this page, I want to delete everything related to that name in google. Since I changed my name and that page doesn't make sense: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/User_talk:Navhy

Iváns (talk)15:44, 16 January 2020

To do this I think we will have to delete the redirection currently setup from https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=User:Navhy&redirect=no to https://translatewiki.net/wiki/User:Iv%C3%A1ns. I will check with Niklas on whether this is OK to do and perform this deletion. Please confirm if this is OK with you.

S'gaw Karen Babel user Information is not written in S'gaw Karen

The S'gaw Karen Babel user information is already translated into S'gaw Karen language however, on the Portal:ksw page, the Babel user information box is written in English. Can you change it to S'gaw Karen?

SawJaemin (talk)15:03, 3 January 2020

It looks like translations are missing. Could you please translate these messages?

Raymond11:03, 11 January 2020

Yes, I have translated most of the phrases but I still haven't see the S'gaw Karen translated version on the Portal:ksw page. Why is the S'gaw Karen language not added to Wikimedia? Can you add the language? Most of the important messages is already translated.

In order to get properly translated in Greek, message MediaWiki:Autoblockedtext needs gender parameters for $1. Check the see also messages too.

Protnet (talk)15:54, 1 January 2020

This message contains barely any language content, so I don’t think it needs to be translated into any Latin-script language (it certainly does need to be translated into languages e.g. using different digits, though). Can this be made optional? Thanks in advance!

A sentence that makes no sense

Hi! The translatable sentence in the MediaWiki:Machinevision-desc/en makes no sense. Here it is:

Interfaces with internal and external machine vision service providers and stores and serves results.

I've highlighted the confusing part. Please fix it and/or at least explain what it tries to say, so that I could translate it correctly.

Piramidion (talk)07:28, 12 December 2019

I assume this is an extension that can take images from MediaWiki (Wikimedia Commons?) and send them to a machine vision service. The machine vision service returns some information about the image (possibly things such as "depicts a domesticated cat, blue sky" or "a domesticated cat playing on a field") and this extensions stores this information in MediaWiki database. It probably also hooks into image pages/search to display this information and/or provides APIs through which this information can be accessed.

Nike (talk)14:12, 12 December 2019

Hi Piramidion, I believe that the first word, "interfaces", is the verb (as in "to interface") and not the noun. So, the sentence has three verbs: interfaces, stores, and serves.

Hamilton Abreu (talk)17:44, 12 December 2019

Note the first word “Interfaces” is a verb conjugated with third person. The implicit subject is “this extension”, which is also the subject for “stores” and “serves”.

Pols12 (talk)17:55, 12 December 2019

OMG, thanks! These explanations should be on the /qqq subpage (there seem to be quite a bunch of incorrect translations already). I thought that "interfaces" is a noun in the plural form.

Piramidion (talk)07:22, 13 December 2019

Please feel free to update the message description. They are freely editable.

Planned server upgrade on December 20th

We have a new server from our sponsor Netcup. It will replace both of our current servers.

The upgrade will bring the following benefits:

  • Increased performance thanks to more RAM and faster disks.
  • Room for future growth: more translations, more projects, new services.
  • More secure and easier to maintain operating system. We are switching from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to Debian 10, which is also used by Wikimedia Foundation.

The server upgrade is planned for December 20th. Based on past experience, this will involve multiple hours of read-only time and a couple of day of disruptions to the regular search, translation search and translation memory features. We will rebuild those indices rather than trying to move them over. The version of ElasticSearch backing these features is also updated.

I will put up a site notice next week.

Nike (talk)14:24, 12 December 2019

MediaWiki:Logentry-bs-privacy-anonymization/en please verify the original text of the message

I suppose the text of the message MediaWiki:Logentry-bs-privacy-anonymization/en should not be '$4 has anonymized the account account. New username: $5' but '$4 has anonymized the account $2. New username: $5

Robby (talk)23:01, 1 November 2019

I agree that the the double word "account account" was a probable error (possible incorrect copy-pasting when one of them would have been a placeholder, however the placeholder $2 suggested in the "/qqq" doc may not work here. This must be checked in the source code and may be the second "account" was there because there was still no value to indicate there (the source code may contain some "FIXME" comment tag, not shown when the message was exported from source code and imported for translations in TWN.

For now, I could not even place any occurence of {{GENDER:$2}} in the translated text, because "$2" is not present in the source English text, and inserting it would make the translated message fuzzy and then not exported from TWN.

All I could do was to translate as if the English source was "their account" (impersonal/neutral form) and not "the account account", or "his/her account" or "the account $2".

Verdy p (talk)23:14, 1 November 2019

This message was changed yesterday with the comment "Change message to be gender-neutral \n This is done because the account that gender should be determined on, is already deleted by the point this message is created". The explanation makes sense, but the resulting message (with the doble "account") should obviously be improved.

Jon Harald Søby (talk)13:45, 2 November 2019

So why not simply "their account" ? (A "qqq" documentation may explain that "their" is the impersonal gender-neutral singular in English. I initially thought that "the account account" was a typo, an incorrect replacement here which does not make sense at all and causes more difficulties to translators or even native English readers, trying to guess what it means: there's only a single account, even if now it is deleted (actually anonymized without personal data like gender). I wonder if this can apply to bot accounts: do we have bots anonymized without also anonymizing the associated owner's account ?

Can we know if an anonymized acount was used by a bot and not a normal person, and does it keep a traceable link to the now anonimized personal account ? Is is safe or even possible to anonimize an account that has a bot associated (but not renamed)? or the inverse situation where a bot gets anonymized without anonimizing the account owner (accoding to policies this cannot be accepted is the bot is still active and authorized: a new bot account should be requested and associated in that case, and the old bot account that was anonimized should then be blocked from connection to all APIs, but not be masked at all given their past impact; it remains important to know that some past edits that were anonimized were automated, and allow independat reviews or reports to analyze their past actions in history, including info possibly documenting the automation rules they used: all bots have made unexpected errors but they are hard to find in the mass and such detection can take a lot of time even after a bot is blocked or no longer active at all) ?

Verdy p (talk)17:30, 2 November 2019

Why not simply using:

$4 has anonymized an account. New username: $5.

It makes clearer that the anonymized account is NOT the account owned and used by $4 perforing the change, but that the admin $4 made the change in the other account now named $5 (whose previous name is voluntarily hidden, but may be found by a few admins using restricted privacy inspection tools). I suppose that this message is the one that all other users will see in the public history log of the new user account (whose name ion $5 may look like "User:Anonymous-71ef38a9" as it was probably randomly generated with some name generator, and checking it did not cause conflict with another active account, or possibly selected manually by the admin doing the check himself).

Verdy p (talk)23:16, 10 December 2019

The text of this message is "❌ $1 has deleted article $3 Reason: $3" but I suppose the correct text of this message should be: "❌ $1 has deleted article $2 Reason: $3"

Robby (talk)07:37, 30 November 2019

There should also be a period (.) after "$2" and before "Reason:", like in other similar messages. This is not the same sentence. (and may be $2 should be between quotation marks, as a deleted page normally would have no visible link to delimit the displayed title). So the English message should be ❌ $1 has deleted article "$2". Reason: $3.

Verdy p (talk)18:02, 30 November 2019

The issue has been solved now.

Jon Harald Søby (talk)14:04, 3 December 2019

Except the missing quotation marks (delimiting the title) and the full stop before "Reason:"
