Et is now a macro language

Nike08:27, 20 January 2011

We usually do not change ISO 639-1 related codes. See no/nb. Main reason for this is that Wikimedia does not change FQDNs for their sites.

Siebrand09:26, 20 January 2011

I don't think there is any immediate need to change this one... the change seems to be brain dead anyway (why not create a new code for the macro language instead?).

Four unclear Mwe messages

These four are unclear and undocumented:

See the original [$4 resource page] for more information.") - for this one it's quite important to know whether $3 is supposed to be written in Hebrew or foreign characters, because the "from" preposition would be different. If it's cannot be known, i'll try to figure out something.

Amir E. Aharoni16:08, 13 January 2011

i asked Michael Dale on IRC to document them. He said yes! (so it should be done shortly)

Siebrand19:21, 17 January 2011

Thank you.

I saw that you changed the links to the messages to the {{Msg-mw}} template. It makes them link to Dutch translations, for example MediaWiki:Mwe-imported from/nl. Is it intentional?

Amir E. Aharoni08:16, 18 January 2011

That should be updated on display. Caching issue, maybe?

Siebrand08:58, 18 January 2011

Now it's en. I didn't do anything special to refresh the page. Strange.

Amir E. Aharoni09:03, 18 January 2011

Pywikipedia stats

Hoi the Translating:Pywikipedia/stats do not get updated.. Thanks,

GerardM14:32, 17 January 2011

Oh, thanks. I knew I forgot something.

Pywikipedia:Redirect-broken-redirect-template and FuzzyBot problem

There is problem with Pywikipedia:Redirect-broken-redirect-template message. As you can see FuzzyBot has done some nasty things. There was ~~~~ and now those are replaced with FuzzyBot's signature.

Issue 716:02, 16 January 2011

Not really the bots fault, but MediaWiki's.

Nike16:09, 16 January 2011

~~~~ should not be in any message.
Siebrand23:36, 16 January 2011
I've introduced code to fix this mistake, regardless of whether or not these strings should be in messages, there is no need for the pre-save transformation that does this to be activated in any of the translation namespaces aside from the message documentation language. Hopefully this will prevent future errors from occurring unexpectedly at the very least.
I've not updated MediaWiki on translatewiki as I'd like to wait for someone with more experience than me to at least be around, but it should immediately begin working on the next update.
RobertL06:53, 17 January 2011
Re-import is of course needed after that to fix the pages.
Nike08:11, 17 January 2011
New Sidebar
Why did you change the sidebar? The new sidebar is unsuitable for working in Translatewiki is not like another wiki project like e.g. Wikipedia. Please restore the old sidebar.
Michawiki11:59, 13 January 2011
What's wrong with it?
Nike12:53, 13 January 2011
What's wrong? All typical links for translators don't exist: the link to the translation tool, the link to the Support, the link to the news etc. Alle the links which existed before are now missing. The sidebar should support translators and not any normal users.
Michawiki21:26, 13 January 2011
You're clearly not seeing the same sidebar I do. All the links you mention are present for me.
McDutchie23:35, 13 January 2011
In these cases, you can try to make a "null edit" to MediaWiki:Sidebar. That usually resolved the issue. The origin is unknown.
Siebrand01:47, 14 January 2011
That page is protected for me, wouldn't it be for him as well?
McDutchie01:57, 14 January 2011
Probably. I'll make a null edit. Let's hope that works.
Siebrand13:15, 14 January 2011
Support for N'ko (nqo)
Hoi, please enable support for the N'ko language. We have a translator and we have a portal page. Thanks,
GerardM13:33, 3 January 2011
What is missing?
Nike22:26, 3 January 2011
Well, Special:LanguageStats/nqo indicate that the language is not yet enabled and therefore valid. Thanks,
GerardM22:28, 3 January 2011
Please update WikiBlame
Hi there, please update your WikiBlame base localisation from Subversion. I introduced some new dialogues with the new query restriction that might confuse a lot of people, if they don't understand them. Thanks in advance, --Flominator 16:11, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
On Wikia:Awc-metrics-recordspager/en: "Showing $1 to \$2 of $3 records", why is there a `\` before "$2"?
Is this normal? Thanks in advance.
Peter1712:28, 7 January 2011
That's a bug that has already been resolved in the sources. Wikia files need an update. Will be done this week.
Translating talk vs Translations talk?
Тест20:22, 6 January 2011
What is the question?
Siebrand21:07, 6 January 2011
Special:PrefixIndex do not work properly (for my language-uk). I do not know how for other languages.
2. May be Special:PrefixIndex/Translating_talk: or some direct links add to with some comment: if Your question is related to...?
Тест21:19, 6 January 2011
Can you give more details than "does not work"?
StringFunctions needed for reviewing proposed changes
Following a previous discussion, I'm wondering if it's possible to enable MediaWiki's StringFunctions on this site, in order to provide a better view of a package of proposed changes across messages.
If I could use {{#replace}} (which is included in StringFunctions), it would be easier to set up an index page that compactly present a list of improvements onto a set of message. For example, I could preesnt a list of proposed changes where 'NewName' replaces 'TentativeName', by writing like:
 == Messages with proposed changes regarding the phrase 'TentativeName' ==
 * [[MediaWiki:newfunc-foo]]: {{#replace:{{MediaWiki:newfunc-foo}}|TentativeName|<del>TentativeName</del><ins>NewName</ins>}}
 * [[MediaWiki:newfunc-bar]]: {{#replace:{{MediaWiki:newfunc-bar}}|TentativeName|<del>TentativeName</del><ins>NewName</ins>}}
In this way, people can easily review the proposed changes in context and see how they're going to look like across messages. (and of course, some neat templates can reduce the effort to write the repeated parts.)
According to mw:Extension:ParserFunctions, the function can be enabeld by adding this line to LocalSettings.php (or something equivalent): $wgPFEnableStringFunctions = true;.
whym12:58, 6 January 2011
I don't think this is a good idea. The possible performance impact of this change is very hard to oversee and if there is an underlying user story that is useful for more users, this should simply be a feature request for the Translate extension.
Siebrand20:00, 6 January 2011
I'm not generally opposed, if it makes things easier for users. However, we should not over-engineer this. I think it's perfectly reasonable to describe in words the suggested changes.
Nike10:05, 7 January 2011
Hearing your comments, I'm not sure if the benefit is big enough to justify the 'overkill'. I and (possibly) other Japanese translators are going to review/revise a significant number of old translations soon. So I'd like to pend my request until we'll find things are difficult or manageable with existing tools only.
Thank you for taking your time.
whym13:24, 7 January 2011
I have enabled the StringFunctions. Please try and if the server goes down pls ping me on IRC.
Raymond15:08, 7 January 2011
Thank you, then, I'll start working with the functions. As far as I can see in the first small trial, it looks nice :)
Why this message is disabled for translators interface?
Тест12:38, 3 January 2011
It is no longer used.
Nike22:12, 3 January 2011
In some cases using of this message is helpful, for example, while jumping via templates.
Тест22:25, 3 January 2011
Ok, I find this button above the text of original English message in round bracets().
