Recent changes messages

When I look at Recentchangestext ("-") translations, it seems obviously incorrect: The English original is set to “-” (i.e. unused, empty), but the (older) translations still use the text which now resides at Recentchanges-summary ("Track the most recent changes to the wiki on this page.").

The problem is that on 2011-04-16, r86186 moved the message from Recentchangestext to Recentchanges-summary, which was quite correctly processed by Raymond who “moved MediaWiki:Recentchangestext/xx to MediaWiki:Recentchanges-summary/xx: Text replace - "Recentchangestext" to "Recentchanges-summary"”). However, on 2011-04-18, FuzzyBot recreated all those Recentchangestext translations, because “Importing a new translation”. I believe the correct solution would be to remove all those translations from the translation source files, and mark the message as optional. (For now, I changed at least MediaWiki:Recentchangestext/cs to “-”.)

There is no problem. Don't worry about it.

Siebrand10:06, 30 May 2012

How come? If you have a clean MediaWiki install with a non-English content language, the RC page is going to start with a duplicated message (one from Recentchanges-summary (in your UI language), the other from Recentchangestext (always in content language, this one should not be there)). See e.g. wikiquote:be:Special:RecentChanges.

Mormegil (talk)11:02, 30 May 2012

Can you show me such an out of the box installation?

Really, don't worry about it.

Siebrand11:04, 30 May 2012

E? I don’t get it. Belarussian Wikiquote is an example of a real working MediaWiki installation suffering from this bug.

I don’t have to worry about this since I have fixed the Czech translation. I just thought somebody might care about the other languages. But OK, I’ll take that as someone else’s problem.

Mormegil (talk)11:29, 30 May 2012

Then it's not a localisation issue, but a code issue. The code I saw meant to prevent this.

There is a hard coded "30" in the message. I believe that this could be taken fom a $wg... variable.

Purodha Blissenbach (talk)20:25, 4 June 2012

Wikitext doesn't provide way to do that.

Nike (talk)20:37, 13 June 2012

Yes, that would need a code change. Does any one happen to know the variable name?

'Show messages with suggestions from translation memory' yields incomplete list

I am translating to ksh, my interface language is ksh. I usually start with 'Show messages with suggestions from translation memory' for a group, and when done, proceed with the untranslated messages. Every so often, I get suggestions from the translation memory for those ones, too, even for messages that did not show up during the 1st step.

This is an example:

Purodha Blissenbach (talk)19:21, 10 June 2012

I am aware of the issue. Currently the translation memory server is not capable of providing suggestions for all messages at once.

Nike (talk)20:55, 13 June 2012

Okay. Thanks!

Creating pages to translate

Hi there, Is it possible to create new pages to be translated by other users into languages I dont know?

--Dennis

Dennis07 (talk)11:48, 30 May 2012

Yes, in theory. To what purpose?

Siebrand12:21, 30 May 2012

I'm writing lots of public freeware Windows applications and I would need translation of the interface texts and language files... German and English is okay, but other languages, as for example Spannish, Frensh, Russian etc. are problematic. I am spending very much work in MediaWiki and translatewiki (recently), so I wanted to ask other people to help me a bit ;)

Dennis07 (talk)15:51, 30 May 2012

Ah, and by the way: Most of them are Open-Source. Not all, but there are defenitely no commercial projects planned (as far as I remember).

Dennis07 (talk)16:24, 30 May 2012

If you are talking about new software to be added here, Special:MyLanguage/Translating:New project has an overview how it happens.
