User rename request

Hi. I changed my username on Wikimedia wikis. So I would like to request a user rename to User:魔琴 . Thanks.

in MediaWiki:Bw-sidebar-changes-lang/scn it's written "Traduzzioni n siciliano" instead of the correct form: "Traduzzioni n sicilianu".

Ajeje Brazorf (talk)08:22, 19 October 2021

Idem for MediaWiki:Bw-sidebar-portal/scn. I think that there's a bug with {{#languagename: {{UILANGCODE}}}}.

Request for new language Aja (Portal:ajg)

I help with the technical part for my friends who speak it and will probably translate parts by means of relaying through those friends at first. When things are reasonably set up I will ask them to join as well and translate by themselves.

LaPingvino (talk)00:08, 10 November 2021

Can you please ask them how to write the name of that language in that language?

It must be something that can appear in a list such as this:

  • Deutsch
  • English
  • fɔ̀ngbè
  • français
  • עברית
  • Nederlands
  • русский
  • Yorùbá

I saw several variants: "aja", "adja", "ajagbe" "ajagbé", "adjagbé", and others. I need help with choosing the right one.

Also, it would be ideal if your friend could join the site as soon as possible. There's not much to set up :)

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)10:24, 11 November 2021

As there is no formal education in Aja, my friend tends to have a bit sloppy spelling at times, so it's hard to check for certain about that. The usage on shows "Aja" as the native form, and that is how he usually calls it himself. The longer forms are synonymous and can be used to distinguish in case of confusion. There is very little existing writing, as the written language/language of education in Benin is French, it's mostly a spoken language.

On my way to onboard everyone, it might need some handholding here and there to get used to the interface etc xD.

I suspect one of the first things to happen will be actually setting up orthographic norms etc, because there don't seem to be any... I might be able to get the author of one of the few dictionaries of the language on board, so we will figure things out xD.

LaPingvino (talk)15:39, 11 November 2021

My friend joined: Cyprien Guiya [ talk · contribs ]

LaPingvino (talk)19:30, 12 November 2021

Thanks. I'll enable it soon.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)07:12, 13 November 2021

Note that the term "Aja" alone is ambiguous with another unrelated language. You indicated the ISO 639 code [ajg], assuming this is the correct language, i.e. the one spoken in Benin and Togo.

"Adja" is the native name, sometimes used in English or French but rarely, ISO 639 and Glottolog use "Aja (Benin)" by default.

Another longer (non-ambiguous) name is "Aja-Gbe" (in English) or "aja-gbé" (in French, spoken officially in Benin and Togo). Gluing it to "ajagbé" is incorrect ("gbé" refers to the group of languages in which "aja" in Benin/Togo is classified).

The portal is created and fixed, but still the language is not enabled (Amir will do that as he said) and in that case the "disabled=yes" flags will be removed (as well as the no-15924=1 flag which disables the link to the translation in the Latin script).

Verdy p (talk)21:20, 13 November 2021

This is now enabled. I put a list of useful links on Cyprien's user page. I recommend starting from the top of that list. Ask me if you need any assistance.

Request for adding/enabling new language: ISO 639-3 sje (bidumsámegiella, Pite Saami) (Portal:sje)

Edited by author.
Last edit: 09:35, 23 August 2021
Pite Saami disabled.png

As a language worker for Pite Saami, one of the editors of the Pite Saami incubator project and the main editor of the Pite Saami dictionary app BidumBágo[1], I would like to request that the language ISO 639-3 sje, bidumsámegiella be opened for editing. There is an official orthography as of August 2019; the script is Latin with a few diacritic marks (á, ä, ö) and the special letters ŋ, đ, ŧ (as well as æ and ø being used as variants of the official ä and ö. I am going to translate into the language, and we are two people for now working on the Incubator project. Thank you in advance!

Anyone able to help?

Olve Utne (talk)19:25, 22 August 2021

Hi Olve Utne

Thanks you for your patience. I've forwarded this ticket to our staff who handles these category of requests, and they will respond here soon.

Abijeet Patro (talk)09:45, 23 August 2021

Much appreciated! Thank you! :-)

Olve Utne (talk)11:35, 23 August 2021

Sorry about the delay! I usually do these configuration changes and I was busy with some Stuff In Real Life :)

It's now available!

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)15:16, 25 August 2021

Thank you very much! :-) Translating to Pite Sami comes up as a choice now. However, I still get the message posted as a screen capture in my OP when trying to translate some of the messages. Any way to find out why that's happening? (This doesn't seem to be a problem now.)

Olve Utne (talk)18:17, 25 August 2021

Thank you very much! :-) Is it OK if I take away the "orange alert" from the Pite Sami portal page, since the language is now (mostly) enabled?

Olve Utne (talk)18:19, 25 August 2021

I fixed it.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)09:19, 26 August 2021

Thank you again. :-) Much appreciated!

Olve Utne (talk)11:40, 26 August 2021

Seems that Pite Sámi has been taken out of Languages.php. Anyone able to tell me what's going on?

Olve Utne (talk)17:40, 29 September 2021

TL;DR: Don't worry, it's good! :)

You've been translating very quickly and this language has passed the threshold of 13% of translated messages (see Translating:MediaWiki). It is now officially exported from translatewiki to the MediaWiki source code repository. Therefore, it no longer needs to be listed separately in translatewiki's local LanguageSettings.php file, and it takes the configuration from the global language configuration file in core MediaWiki.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)10:16, 30 September 2021

Aaaah.... :-D Thank you for your help! It feels so good that things are on track!

Olve Utne (talk)21:44, 30 September 2021

Please add Nawdm language (Portal:nmz)

Please add the Nawdm language. I'd like to translate MediaWiki into it. It's spoken in Ghana and Togo, and it's written in the Latin alphabet.

Do you actually know this language?

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)12:03, 3 October 2021

Although I am not a native speaker of Ainu, I have been studying and investigating this language for several years. Thus I think I can master this language well.

ChoiChong (talk)13:21, 4 October 2021

Can you please make some contributions to the Incubator first? On translatewiki, contributions from non-native speakers are hard to verify, especially when it comes to languages that are small and severely endangered, like Ainu. Thanks for understanding.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)12:18, 7 October 2021

oh another Ainu speaker, well i'm learning ainu. When I'll have an acceptable level I'll check your translations, if you want.

Request for new script: Korean (Mixed script)

Please add the Hangul-Hanja mixed script for the Korean language. Some people including me want to translate MediaWiki into it.

  • Korean (ISO 639-3: kor, already exists in
  • 'Korean (Mixed script)' - '韓國語 (國漢文混用)'
  • LTR (or vertical-rl)
  • Hangul-Hanja mixed script in addition to existing Hangul-only script
  • Falls back to 'Korean (Republic of Korea)'
  • Proposal for language code in wiki: 'ko-kore' (derived from ISO 15924 Kore)
EighteenChild (talk)05:57, 9 November 2021

The code [ko] is NOT restricted to be "Hangul-only". it is already in mixed script, allowing Hanja.

  • Korean in "Hangul-only" is a variant coded [ko-Hang] (where Hanja characters would be transliterated to Hangul).
  • There's also a deprecated variant "Jamo-only" coded [ko-Jamo] (where Hangul syllables are not composed in squares, but written left-to-right, using narrow jamos and not distringuishingf leading and final consonnants). It only existed for legacy old apps that could not render Hangul syllables composed in squares. But the conversion from Hangul to Jamo can be done algorithmically and very easily (the reverse is not evident because that conversion may loose the distinction between leading and trailing consonnants, unless there's an explicit syllable separator, such as a space, punctuation, or invisible joiner control, as it existed and was used in legacy 8-bits encodings before Unicode). There's no need of this "Jamo-only" variant here, even to support legacy 8-bit terminals (if they can't render syllabic squares, they an decompose them automatically in narrow jamos aligned horizontally). so the [Jamo] code in ISO 15924 is just offered for compatiblity with legacy documents not distinguishing the two types (leading or trailing) of consonnants.

Northern Thai language name change

Hi I would like to request a change of Northern Thai language name, change the name คำเมือง to Northern Thai language.png(ᨽᩣᩈᩣᨣᩤᩴᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ), the translation of the ᨽᩣᩈᩣᨣᩤᩴᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ name is as follows.

  • ᨽᩣᩈᩣ=Language
  • ᨣᩤᩴᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ=(Kham Muang/คำเมือง) Meaning=Northern Thai
  • ᨽᩣᩈᩣᨣᩤᩴᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ=Northern Thai language

Northern Thai currently does not have access to the popular Unicode, so it may be difficult to see Northern Thai text, thanks.

Tai Tham is in Unicode and I can see this text on my computer.

However, I have a few questions:

  1. Do you actually know this language? You translate to a lot of languages. It's better if native speakers do it.
  2. Till now, Northern Thai has been written here in the Thai script. How much is the Tai Tham script used?
  3. Is the name you propose written anywhere outside Wikipedia? For example, in books or academic articles?
Amir E. Aharoni (talk)08:11, 6 November 2021

I studied in Chiang Mai and Chiang Saen for 3 years, I am fluent in Northern Thai language for the second grade, I have discussed with an expert to confirm the ᨽᩣᩈᩣᨣᩤᩴᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ name, for Evidence, see my talk page link, thanks.

Overcome export message limit

in order to feed a compendium of Catalan translation memories , a colleague who is taking care of this task commented to me that he could not retrieve the whole messages of one of the projects in this siste (MediaWiki Extensions).

The chosen message group is too large. Choose a message group that has fewer than 10.000 messages or contact translation admin for advice.

How would you recommend overcoming this limitation? Preferably in a programmatic manner...

Toniher (talk)10:07, 23 October 2021

when we try to export translations for group "MediaWiki Extensions" ("ext-0-all", about 38,000 messages), export fails with this message:

The chosen message group is too large. Choose a message group that has fewer than 10.000 messages or contact translation admin for advice.

Also if we try to export translations for only "Extensions used by Wikipedia" ("ext-0-wikimedia", about 19,800 messages), export fails with same message.

We use this page to export translations:

Does anybody know any solution to bypass this limit?

Thank you!

Request temporary removal of translation right for user:DDPAT

User:DDPAT is an overactive user who makes bad translations. He already translated everything into Ukrainian except for Phabricator project.

I did not want the user to be banned right away, because not all the translations are bad, some are ok. But the ones with mistakes are rudely incorrect, to the point that it's better to have English original. User's English is not sufficient, he doesn't work on getting to know the project he translates the UI for, and on top of that he goes translating too quickly, overlooking mistakes that could have been noticed. He agrees that his command of English is low but continues to work enthusiastically even though I begged to slow down, and familiarise himself with the project before translating.

TWN is not tweaked for proofreading the work of a certain user, so it's a rather hard thing to do. The user translated some projects that I have no idea about and I can't judge the accuracy of translation there. I know no one who can proofread Phabricator translations after him if he continues, therefore I ask for right removal.

Ата (talk)17:35, 27 October 2021

Thanks for opening a discussion. When was this discussed before? Only in Thread:User talk:DDPAT/Що ви робите??

"Low quality" is rarely grounds for block or deflag because it's so hard to judge. I'd like to see some sort of consensus on portal talk:uk or similar to make such a decision (similar to mass removals of translations and so on). Being uncooperative or knowingly disruptive is another matter.

Maybe you can manage to find an agreement on what kind of projects/whatever are most suitable for them to translate in the future, to divide work with other Ukrainian translators? Or you can come up with a plan for them to correct at least some common type of error they made? Special:SearchTranslations may help find patterns.

Nemo (talk)18:58, 27 October 2021

I am not sure there was a discussion on Translatewiki, but the user participates on Ukrainian Wikimedia Community Discord server for a while and we had a lot of opportunities to discuss his translations as well as to try to persuade, sometimes really beg him to stop.

While he seems to show some understanding and some of the examples I will show precede those attempts to reach some understanding, unfortunately it seems that the user does not intend to stop.

For instance, today on the Discord server he has asked whether "Масив вибраних таблиць cargo на основі полів, групування за та впорядкування за автоматично заповнюється." would be a good translation for MediaWiki:Apihelp-cargoqueryautocomplete-param-tables/en's Array of selected cargo table(s) based on which Field(s), Group By and Order By are autocompleted. While it is clear that what the message has is some sort of SQL-like keywords, he does not realise it and attempts to translate "Order By" and other literally word by word (instead of leaving it be or at least using "ordering" instead). When instead of providing my suggestion I have asked the user to just skip the message (and better all API help group), he has told that he cannot do that. I am not sure whether it is some sort of OCD, naïve enthusiast or some other sort of issue, but in case of API help as a user I have to switch by interface language to English when I can no longer trust translation quality lest a bot I am writing does something wrong because of poor translations…

If you look at my recent contributions you will find quite a few reverts of the user who has "fixed" tens of messages by replacing the word for campaign (кампанія) with the word for company (компанія), basing on him not knowing those are two different words… (Even "campanian age" did not avoid the same fate in uri.http://resource(dot)geosciml(dot)org/classifier/ics/ischart/Campanian/uk…). While it is one example I know that there are other such examples yet to be discovered, for instance the user themselves mentioned that he has trouble understanding when the word "account" refers to a bank account and when to an account you create by registration on a website which have different translations in Ukrainian ([банківський] рахунок and обліковий запис respectively).

In MediaWiki:Growthexperiments-mentor-dashboard-mentee-overview-add-filter-total-edits-headline/uk yesterday I had to fix his translation of "Edit count" saying "to edit a counter", Редагувати лічильник, to a proper, number of edits, "Число редагувань" (could also be Кількість редагувань, amount of edits). I had discovered the message on the screenshots of the newly deployed feature the message corresponds to. While it is not uncommon for people to misinterpret such word clusters in English, in this case both the general context and the specific context provided in qqq, "Headline in mentee filtering interface" give a good enough background to translate it correctly. Interestingly he did manage to translate the same message correctly to Russian, MediaWiki:Growthexperiments-mentor-dashboard-mentee-overview-add-filter-total-edits-headline/ru has the valid translation saying "edit counter". But it is not always the case that his Russian translations are good either, for instance in MediaWiki:Growthexperiments-mentor-dashboard-mentee-overview-info-legend-star/uk, he made the opposite mistake, misinterpreted the verb to bookmark to be a noun a bookmark, and in this case he has made the same mistake also in Russian, MediaWiki:Growthexperiments-mentor-dashboard-mentee-overview-info-legend-star/ru in fact still says "a mentees bookmark", which I guess is not as critical and as the poor API documentation and would still be understandable, but would be perceived as a broken language that is quite characteristic of poor quality translation. This unfortunately also shows that the issue is not only with Ukrainian translations, although I think the bigger part of the user's translations are into Ukrainian.

I have decided to check the recentmost 10 edits now:

Let's take 10 more from a few days deeper:

I have also looked at some Phabricator translations. They seem to be ok, but the problem is that in case of Phabricator it is especially difficult to determine when they are not, as Phabricator has notoriously useless message documentation.

The problem is that 95% of the user's translations or even more are good. But the problem is that his poor command of English, which he backs by using Google Translate (and uses quite responsibly in fact) results in such hiccups as some of the above. Sometimes the hiccups are just strange, for example would be a good translation, if not for a grammatical gender mismatch in the translation (поле is neuter in Russian, and thus it should have been «пустым» instead of «пустой», it is quite a major grammar mistake, although does not hinder comprehension). It is not uncommon for people to make mistakes, I am sure I can go through my own, or Ата's contributions and find some, some as embarrassing as above, but the problem is that I am sure that both Ата and I would be able to pinpoint the mistake and fix it. Unfortunately I do not believe DDPAT can. If it was possible to let them translate but only propagate his translations to production once they were reviewed I would be all pro him continuing translating, but I do not believe it is possible, thus I have to support the notion of the translator rights removal.

We had another case of poor quality translations to Ukrainian, by Andriykopanytsia who while knowing English and Ukrainian well didn't know anything about MediaWiki and Wikimedia, and thus left us with legacy of many a message to be reviewed, and I am afraid we are not ready to have that backlog increased by a lot again. Poor translations are especially unfair towards third party platforms as they might dissuade people from using them, but we also don't want to deal with MediaWiki/Wikimedia messages that have wrong translations that are not always easy to catch either.

Thank you, I will take this into account, and I promise that I will definitely get better.

It's completely different, because I do it on a completely different site.

Fair enough regarding this one, it seems that the translation on TWN is already existing and questionable and wasn't done by you.

Hi! First of all, I am not too much of authority and I am not familiar with most of user's translation but I wanted to give clear examples of incorrect translations from the user that accidentally got my attention. This and this and this are what I found. The first edit, despite looking minor, completely ruins sentence from grammatical point of view. The second and third examples demonstrate translations that just make no sense at all. Also there were couple of this type of edits that are minor but also wrong. Yesterday I had a chat with DDPAT about the whole situation. On the one hand, he kinda understands what are his problems in this project (usage of Google translate and etc.) but on the other hand, I once more had to beg him not to translate things he has no clue about. I agree with Base that "poor translations are especially unfair towards third party platforms" because I literally discovered them while using the soft, however, I am not one to decide what to do with user's translation right.

Hello, Ata. I did not translate the fabricator, so you asked not to do it as you indicated, and as I claim due to the low level of English proficiency. But I want to note a little bit that I used to translate these projects very actively and «quickly», and now I'm just a little more or less updating or creating new messages, which later appear.

Yes, of course I want only the best, and yes, sometimes I also may not notice some mistakes, and it may seem that I am very short of creating this translation so that there is Ukrainian everywhere, and this is partly true, but… But I I hope that I haven't caused much damage that needs to be read, and that I won't be as active as before. I hope we can find some consensus, because I can always count on your advice, because you have some experience with it.

You can filter for DDPAT's recent translations for review using a manually constructed link:

You can also change the group parameter.

Your watchlist might contain too any items. Sometimes the only workaround is to empty the watchlist entirely...

Request for user name change

Hi. I've changed my username on all the other wikis, so I better do it here as well. Can I request a change from User:Knud Winckelmann to User:KnudW ? Regards

Missing edits

And where did all the edits from Special:RecentChanges go (link)?

DDPAT (talk)17:02, 20 October 2021

I'm not sure how did you get to this link. If I switch my user interface language to Ukrainian and click "Переклади мовою: українська" in the sidebar, I see translations to Ukrainian.
