Plural forms

If MW introduced plural and genitive forms, there are needs for: --Millosh 17:24, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

  • Genitive plural (we need constructions like "number of articles"). --Millosh 17:24, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
  • Singular/plural are not the only forms for expressing numbers. Actually, for example, Slovenian and a small number of Slavic languages have dual form, while Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian and the most of other Slavic languages have paucal forms. So, the correct way for expressing numbers should be defined with formula (I think that some localization software have it). Here is the example for Seribian/Croatian/...: --Millosh 17:24, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
    • x%10 == 1 & x != 11: singular
    • x%10 == (2, 3, 4) & x != (12, 13, 14): paucal
    • other: plural

So, is it possible to implement such way of marking number forms? --Millosh 17:24, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it is possble. I will ask Nike to program it for you if you please confirm for which language it is. You may also want to start some translations that do not use plural in the meantime, and create a user page with a useful link to a project where you are also active. Cheers! Siebrand 17:44, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
Actually, I wanted to continue with Serbian localization (it is not in so bad situation) when I saw this problem, because it exists in other free software localizations. --Millosh 22:31, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
Also, I may try to ask communities from other projects about that and similar linguistic issues... Hmm... I need to finish my bot before/for that. --Millosh 22:31, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
Millosh, I asked you two questions you did not answer. Please answer them:
  • Which language codes exactly are you requesting the above described plural forms for?
  • Could you please create a user page?
Cheers! Siebrand 22:47, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
At least: sr, hr, bs and sh. However, I will check for other languages because the most of Slavic languages have this or similar feature (for example, Slovenian has dual, which is similar to formula above, but doesn't affect numbers 3 and 4. However, I am not sure do they have separate forms for 3 and 4. --Millosh 09:12, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
ru is also here (like sr, hr, bs and sh). --Millosh 09:18, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for elaborating. What we need to be able to facilitate the above is precise information, so I will double check now.
The languages [sr] Српски/Srpski (Српски/Srpski), [hr] hrvatski (hrvatski), [bs] bosanski (bosanski), and [sh] Srpsko-hrvatski/Српско-хрватски (Srpsko-hrvatski/Српско-хрватски) should support the following plural configuration:
  • x%10 == 1 & x != 11: singular
    • x%10 == (2, 3, 4) & x != (12, 13, 14): paucal
    • other: plural
Please let me know if this is both correct and complete. If it is, a simple yes will suffice. If it is not, please write a complete block like I just did to not leave any room for interpretation. Cheers! Siebrand 09:53, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, formula has to be updated: --Millosh 15:47, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

  • x%10 == 1 & x%100 != 11: singular
  • x%10 == (2, 3, 4) & x%100 != (12, 13, 14): paucal
  • other: plural

And this works for at least sr, hr, bs, sh and ru. --Millosh 15:47, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Plural form feature for ru works since 2005 year. --ajvol 12:46, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
Hm. If it is so, then it should be done in the same way for sr, hr, bs and sh. But, are you sure that present plural forms include differences between paucal and plural? And if it is so, is the formula above the same for Russian? --Millosh 10:57, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Currently the language files for bs, hr, sr-el, and sr-ec use the following plural functions:
if ($count > 10 && floor(($count % 100) / 10) == 1) {
   return $forms[2];
} else {
   switch ($count % 10) {
      case 1:  return $forms[0];
      case 2:
      case 3:
      case 4:  return $forms[1];
      default: return $forms[2];
I think that should give the same result as the formula you wrote above. Russian use almost the same function, but first checks for a fourth word form:
$count = abs( $count );
if ( isset($forms[3]) && $count != 1 )
   return $forms[3];

if ($count > 10 && floor(($count % 100) / 10) == 1) {
   return $forms[2];
} else {
   switch ($count % 10) {
      case 1:  return $forms[0];
      case 2:
      case 3:
      case 4:  return $forms[1];
      default: return $forms[2];
The Serbo-Croatian (sh) language file does not seem to have any special support for plural (and testing at sh.wikipedia I don't see working paucal form). /Lejonel 16:11, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Hm. It seems that I am confused with this syntax (I can't understand what floor(($count % 100) / 10) == 1 is doing exactly), but if you say that it works like I described, everything if fine :) BTW, what is the fourth form in Russian? --Millosh 14:08, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

It is simple plural form for messages without numbers. Example: "{{PLURAL:$1|Category|||Categories}}" --ajvol 09:50, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

A similar issue arises with word gender. A construction like Welcome to this special page of {{SITENAME}} into French (for example) will vary depending on the gender of {{SITENAME}}: Wikipedia is feminine (Bienvenue à cette page spéciale de la {{SITENAME}}) but Wiktionary is masculine (Bienvenue à cette page spéciale du {{SITENAME}}). Might as well address this at the same time as number issues. Urhixidur 21:56, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Template grammar for Polish

I want to use {{grammar}} template implemented as function convertGrammar in php for Polish language. This is open bug from 2007-11-01. I was wrote code to resolve this problem. This code is here - section new code and in the attachment for this bug. I can't finish my work with translations in Polish without template grammar. What else can I do to speed up the process? Sp5uhe 09:41, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

I have to say that preferred way (from our point of view) is to create an array like this for every project and file a request under Wikimedia/Language setup. Actually exactly that is asked in the second comment of the bug above, if you didn't read it yet. – Nike 15:19, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
I was found this comment, but I was not found any source file in svn repository like this sample in message and thought that was a mistake. Here - section new code now is a new source file with arrays declared in a format from Your and JeLuF post. This is definitions of all (only changed by inflection) case inflection of Wikimedia projects names in Polish language. Thanks a lot Nike. What should I do now? Sp5uhe 18:36, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Arrays is ready with project and username group in projects. New source file is here and in bugilla. What else should I do? Sp5uhe 01:23, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Need to wait until the bug is processed. – Nike 20:05, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Localization of special pages used in extensions

Is it possible to localize the special pages used in extensions such as Special:MultipleUpload? --Meno25 21:51, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

No. That feature would need to be added to each individual extension. Some extensions support it, but we do not support it in Betawiki. I'll have a chat about it with Nike. Siebrand 21:56, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

receiving emails when watching articles -> URL in addresses are wrong

Hi, I am watching some articles and also receiving emails about changes on them. But the URLs in this email contain a wrong address (see below with "localhost"). Is there a better possibility to correct this here than hardcoding the URL: MediaWiki:Enotif_body ? It would be great if this gets fixed, because then I immediately with a click come to the desired page. On request I could provide more info. ----Erkan Yilmaz (Wikiversity:Chat, wiki blog) 23:25, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Done Done, thx for the good service. ----Erkan Yilmaz (Wikiversity:Chat, wiki blog) 00:48, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Fuzzybot marked this as fuzzy, but I don't think the message is used anywhere in the software. The message was added in r19651 where it was used in ImagePage.php, but ImagePage.php was reverted in r19668. /Lejonel 00:04, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

I double checked. You are correct. I'm removing it. Cheers! Siebrand 00:15, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
Done Done Siebrand 00:23, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Missingimage is also not used. It was removed from Linker.php in r8412. After that an ordinary red link is used for missing files. /Lejonel 12:20, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Done Done removed. Siebrand 17:11, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

This message is used on Special:Undelete as button caption and on Special:Log/delete as link for sysops in each line. It would be good to create a separate message, because in one case, the text should be capitalized, and in other case it should not. --ajvol 08:51, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Done Done with MediaWiki:Undeletelink. Cheers! Siebrand 17:42, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Missing and misnamed message in SpecialForm extension

The message MediaWiki:Formindexmismatchtext is missing in the extension. The message is used on the page with the heading in MediaWiki:Formindexmismatch. I think the current content in MediaWiki:Formindexmismatch is a bit long for a heading, so it was probably intended as the text for MediaWiki:Formindexmismatchtext.

So MediaWiki:Formindexmismatch should be renamed to MediaWiki:Formindexmismatchtext. And MediaWiki:Formindexmismatch should be a shorter message for the heading, maybe "Name Pattern and Template Mismatch". /Lejonel 20:07, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

I think the English version of that is really strange, and have problems translating it. Can someone who knows what that extension does make a better English description for it? /Lejonel 23:33, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

I looked into this myself, and I think the extension adds RSS feeds for new pages in categories and <catnews> tags for some kind of in-page listing of new pages in categories. But this is not very important, because the extension only works with MediaWiki 1.4 and localised extension descriptions are not available until recently (1.12). /Lejonel 00:37, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

This message is very difficult to translate into high inflection language (like Russian), where word (lexeme) can be used in many different forms, depending on the surrounding words. Message MediaWiki:Shareduploadwiki-linktext is used as variable $1 in MediaWiki:Shareduploadwiki and in MediaWiki:Shareduploadwiki-desc, but the phrase from linktext can have different forms in these two messages. Please avoid messages, which contains other messages.

So I propose to replace

The description on its $1 there is shown below.

The description on its [[commons:$2|file description page]] there is shown below.

where $2 is name of the page on Commons. --ajvol 11:34, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Not all wikis have the interwiki link "commons". Maybe we can copy MediaWiki:Shareduploadwiki-linktext to MediaWiki:Shareduploadwiki-desc-linktext. SPQRobin 12:30, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it will solve the problem. Thanks --ajvol 19:54, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Another problem with MediaWiki:Shareduploadwiki-desc is the word "there". Neither that message or MediaWiki:Sharedupload mentions any place that can be referred to as "there". /Lejonel 22:32, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Please comment this message of extension of the week (MediaWiki:translate-checks-balance/qqq) --ajvol 08:17, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

I tried to explain how the message is used. /Lejonel 10:39, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

The message "editinginterface" is currently the only message containing a link to Betawiki. The problem is this message is only shown to sysops. So I searched for messages shown to also non-sysops. I found "allmessagestext" and "protectedinterface". So I propose to add the first message, which would really get more translators to Betawiki. I don't know if the second is good, it may become too many messages containing a link to Betawiki... Just an idea :-) SPQRobin 16:42, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

SPQRobin told me about the idea of both on IRC and I personally think that this would be really great, best regards, --Spacebirdy 16:46, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

The part of this message which refers to '$3 page views' doesn't seem to be used in the special page on statistics on any of the wiki sites which I have visited. Also, en:Wikipedia seems to have disabled a related function to do with the page hit counter, see 'Are page hit counters available?'. Should the message definition be amended to get rid of this part? Lloffiwr 18:04, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Messages should be translated as they are in the source code, not as they are tailored on certain sites. As you can see here, all variables are being used. Cheers! Siebrand 18:46, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

a small enhancement request

We are already doing some transalations ,

  • Is it possible we can make these thansalations along with its original english version searchable from google? We have done some effort which may prove help full to others
    • Actualy I do dream of a feature First we will be just selecting words from dropdown menus for any two languages and save them as synonyms with 3-4 optional synonyms
    • I can put Any Number of words in a search engine and the search engine returns synonyms for selected words may be in random selection ,This random selections will be manualy rearranged , tagged and saved in searchable database for future searches .
    • At times I feel MediaWiki software can revolutionise entire transalation requirements of the global population

May be I am wrong or too optimistic

Any way thanks for making a big change through your translate wiki initiative

Mahitgar 12:49, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Is this (YouTube) what you are looking for? Or more like supported from the software itself? I think the problem is that English->ANY_LANGUAGE is not (yet) available. So you would probably have to write a connector for each language. The front end implementation could be the same for each language, though... Siebrand 13:48, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Where are the translation tool strings?

The strings in the drop-down boxes in the translation tool (Special:Translate) need to be accessible for translation, which is apparently not the case at this point in time. I'm mostly doing fr, and the current fr text of the tool seems odd to me. I wanted to tweak it, but couldn't find it even when searching with all boxes checked... Urhixidur 21:52, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

There is not really a point in localising those other than adding translation overhead in our opinion. Please focus on the actual content. If you have ideas on the current naming convention in general, if it can be improved to better serve our translators, please share your ideas with us. Cheers! Siebrand 22:48, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
All translatable message of the tool are under Translate (mw ext) group, but group names are not translated. – Nike 07:50, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Source of language names for "menus"

Hi. I'd like know the way for modifying the Spanish language names in menus (I'm sorry for my English syntax :( ). I. e., when it is shown the list of languages on "View modifications to this language:". There are many untranslated names of languages that remain in English or their native language: cbk-zam - Chavacano de Zamboanga (chabacano de Zamboanga/zamboangueño), lmo - Lumbaart (lombardo), ext - Extremaduran (extremeño), etc. Bye. Lin linao chillkatuen 11:28, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Translate extension message group Translate (mw ext). Translating language names into other languages is not something we do here. We use the information delivered by CLDR for that. For our purpose we only really need the native names of languages and the English name. All other translations that are present are a bonus. As for cbk-zam: as that is not an ISO 639 language under that code, that will most probably never be available. Siebrand 12:38, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Then... Spanish/XYZese names are there too? I can't find it. So, I should bother them by many asks :). Thanks. Lin linao chillkatuen 16:14, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
The extension that implements the CLDR for MediaWiki is here. Siebrand 17:24, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Local fall back languages

At the page Translating:How to start I read "if your knowledge of English isn't that good, you can request for language(s) to be added above the edit form to help you". How can I add another language?--Ahonc 13:02, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Ask it at Translating:Tasks, but now you are here, you can just say here wich language(s) you want to be added. SPQRobin 16:01, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
We need the language for which you would like us to configure this, and which language(s) you would be to see added. Cheers! Siebrand 17:15, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Implementing calendar for a new language

Hi, I was implemented a class named LanguageFa.php (placed in ./languages/classes/) to have Persian date in mediawiki, it was tested locally and works fine on my tests.

Now, want to now, how can I commit it to the main source?

Another question is, how can I correct some translating issues? How can I call other translators for these issues? (to have same ideas!)
