Kiwix access key translations

There are 30 optional messages about access keys in Kiwix. Do the translation have to be unique or can I just translate using the first letter of the translated line in my language?

Nedergard (talk)06:19, 29 December 2011

They are access keys. They need to be unique to work properly.

Siebrand09:02, 29 December 2011

Has this been documented somewhere?

Nemo (talk)16:42, 13 July 2012

Propably not. The smart software producers make the access keys (or hotkeys) automatically. I worked for one of the largest software companies in the world (not MS) and they had their own little piece of programming doing just that job (btw so does the biggest one, that is Microsoft). This is basically something that the developers should solve: an automated assignment of unique access keys in one screen. If they want to do it by translators, then I bow humbly and deeply and thank them and hand my bill - because withouth hard cash (probaply close to 4 figured euro sum) I'm not doing this kind of job. It is an endless job: one developer changes one word and x translators in x languages have to change the translation of one letter - get a life, even for open source software translation this is a total waste of resources. Is someone playing a bad joke on me? I hope not.

@Nedergard Interesting, I have open a feature request https://sourceforge.net/p/kiwix/feature-requests/476/ but I must admit that I have not clue what type of rules should be implemented in such a software.
