The three words "Notices", "Messages" and "Posts" are all translated the same in my language (Hebrew). The Hebrew word is "הודעות".

Thank you for your answer.

"Notices" in notifications groups all Notifications that are not as important as the ones in alerts. Is there any way to have a small difference between "messages" and "notices"? People may not understand why they have messages both in "alerts" and "notices", especially when they have seen it in the previous configuration.

English has a variety of different words: Alerts, Notices, Notifications, Messages, Posts.

In Hebrew we only have the two following words:

  • "הודעות": This is the most appropriate Hebrew translation for "Notices", "Messages" and "Posts".
  • "התראות": This is the most appropriate Hebrew translation for "Alerts" and "Notifications".

Which English word(s) are used for the red badge, and which one(s) are used for the blue badge? I agree that the current division of notifications is extremely confusing and unclear, especially in Hebrew.

I've invited another translator who is more expert than me to join this discussion.

Red badge is "alerts", blue badge is "notice".

You can see the definitions and the distribution of the most common notifications in the documentation. Labels used on that documentation page are using the translations we are discussing about.

You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason:

The action you have requested is limited to users in the group: Users.

You can view and copy the source of this page.

Return to Thread:User talk:Guycn2/MediaWiki:Echo-notification-notice-text-only/he/reply (5).

AFAIK, the Echo extension only uses three words: "Alerts", "Notices", and "Notifications".

IINM, "Posts" and "Messages" are not used in this extension.

"Alerts" refer to the red badge (Echo badge alert red.svg), and "Notices" refer to the blue badge (Echo chat icon.svg).

"Notifications" is a general word that includes both "Alerts" and "Notices". This is actually the special page (Special:Notifications) that shows all kinds of notifications, i.e. both alerts and notices.

In Hebrew we have a problem, because "Alerts" means "התראות", "Notices" means "הודעות", and "Notifications" means either "הודעות" or "התראות". This results a confusing duplication, because this way the translation of "Notifications" must be similar to either "Alerts" or "Notices". Currently, it is similar to "Notices", as the special page in Hebrew is called "הודעות", while the blue badge is also called "הודעות".

Yeah, that's the issue more or less.

Months ago at the previous change I carefully went over all the messages and made it consistent. I had to be repetitive because we don't have enough varied words. I am fine with doing it one more time if needed, but I'd really appreciate a glossary that everybody can use. And of course it will be OK to update this glossary when needed.

If you translate "Notice" by "הודעה" and "Alert" by "התראה", that fine.

Translate "Notification" by "הודעה" is not that confusing, because Alerts are the most important Notifications.

Amir, speaking of glossary I think T129088 is for you. :)

Any updates? Thoughts?
