Needs context. Is this from the noun (something one can do) or adjective (how active something is)?

Nike (talk)21:40, 2 September 2012
This is only used in the admin interface and refers to user activity (ie: actions that users take).

(Added to qqq)

Jrice (talk)16:14, 17 September 2012

Term as in linguistics or as period?

Nike (talk)21:41, 2 September 2012

'term' here refers to a word, which is to be defined by admins for an EOL glossary.

User does not want to receive email:

Please document context.

Siebrand22:21, 13 August 2012

This was very poorly written, so I've changed it to read: "User does not want to receive email:"

I also added to qqq:

This is string seen my admins (only) when editing user accounts. It is a label for a checkbox; if the checkbox is checked, the user will not receive any email at all from EOL.

Jrice (talk)20:21, 29 August 2012

If this message is the label of a checkbox, the final colon is unnecessary.

Toliño Fala aquí comigo 11:52, 31 August 2012

Normally I would agree, but A) the checkbox actually appears in another table column in this case and B) it's only visible by admins, so I don't care enough to change it.  ;)

Tagalog version

Any idea how soon when I will able to see the Tagalog version of EOL become live?

AnakngAraw (talk)20:46, 10 August 2012

The two main views of the site need to be reasonably well-formatted.

http://eol.org/set_language?language=tl (As of this writing, that view is missing the latest translations, but if you check again on Friday, they will be there.)

...The two biggest problems are the overlap of "Galaw ng" and "Pamayanan tumingin ng masa marami pang" on the main page and, on any given species page, the layout of the tabs at the top, which, in the version I'm looking at, are:

Malawakang pananaw Detalye 21 Mga midya 2 Mga mapa Mga pangalan Pamayanan Mga mapagkukunan Panitikan Mga pagsasapanahon

...Can these strings be reasonably shortened? Would it be unacceptable in Tagalog to remove the "Mga" for most of them?

Jrice (talk)16:04, 13 August 2012

"Mga" is the pluralizer. Can you add "line breaks"?

AnakngAraw (talk)13:39, 14 August 2012

Sorry for the delay: busy couple of weeks at EOL, as we're trying to upgrade the tools we use to create the site.

Sorry, but: no, a break doesn't work here. I'll have to run this by our more design-minded folks here and respond again later. Apologies.  : |

Jrice (talk)20:31, 29 August 2012

Finally had some time around to this. Sorry about that. I'll be adding some "BR" tags in there and forcing Taglog to use a two-line format for those tabs... Need a little more time to implement, but so far, so good; Taglog will likely be active next Thursday.

My dictionary knows one general and three specific meanings for this word. Which one is it?

Nike (talk)22:48, 18 August 2012

Addded to qqq:

This refers to biological reproduction (mating, budding, spore-production, etc).

Jrice (talk)21:32, 29 August 2012

Thank you for clarification. I corrected Finnish translation.

Results %{from} - %{to} of %{total} for %{for}

Please document context and parameters. If any of the parameters are numbers, plural support should be added.

Siebrand22:25, 13 August 2012

Three are numerical (from, to, total). Because there are multiple numerical values, how do you suggest coding this? I'm not familiar with a convention to handle multiple pluralizations.

(The context is search results.)

I'd love to know what languages with complex pluralization would do. At least in English, "Results 1 - 1 of 1 for Tiger" would be considered "acceptable if slightly awkward" and is certainly something one sees often in the wild. I suppose we could pluralize on "total" only, so one would receive "Result 1 for Tiger" vs "Results 1 - 2 of 2 for Tiger", and so on. But, really, what's being pluralized is the index of the set itself, yes? Meaning, the pluralization rule will always be either 1 (only one result, thus one index) or 2 (there are two indexes of results given). ...Unless there are languages (perhaps Chinese) where the plural of the prepositional phrase is also important: "of 100" vs "of 1" vs "of 2" or what have you. I'm not aware, though. And if that's the case, again: I'm not sure how to code this.

Jrice (talk)13:59, 16 August 2012

This case seems to be very similar to MediaWiki's message Showingresultsheader ("Results $1 - $2 of $3 for $4"). Looks like you may be able to use this in Rails, too.

See here for all translations.

Toliño Fala aquí comigo 15:06, 19 August 2012

These were all patchwork messages; I'll put the first three on the TODO list to fix it, it's not simple enough to do right now. The fourth was an easy fix; "location_created_colon" was removed.

add selected classifications for move

This is documented as button text. Shouldn't it start with a capital A (Add)?

Siebrand22:24, 14 August 2012

No, we've gone with lowercase buttons, and in fact force the issue in the code (not sure I like it that way, but...)

Jrice (talk)14:26, 16 August 2012

You shouldn't do that in code. Look into doing it using CSS, but only for English, please. For German, for example, nouns must be capitalised.

Siebrand17:45, 16 August 2012

Added to the TODO list.

Jrice (talk)21:14, 29 August 2012

(only if multiple suggestions for the same search term, sort is low-->high)

Please docoment context. Appears to have awkward phrasing and may be part of a patchwork message.

Siebrand23:08, 14 August 2012

In fact, this is just informational text on a form.

Added to qqq: This is informational text on a form viewable only by admins. It explains how possible values for a field called 'sort order' affect the sorting of search suggestions. For example, if the admin wanted to create several search suggestions for 'sliverfish', they could set Thysanura with a value of 1 so it appears first, then Raiamas senegalensis with a value of 2 and Pleuragramma antarcticum with a value of 3, so it appears last.

Jrice (talk)21:12, 29 August 2012

an older version of "%{link}"

Please document context. Might be patchwork or a missing capital and/or punctuation.

Siebrand23:06, 14 August 2012

Patchwork. Fixed; this message was removed; updated user_commented_on_older_data_object_colon.

Jrice (talk)20:53, 29 August 2012

Image objects will contain two 'mediaURL' elements - the first being the URL of the image on the provider's website, and the second is the URL of the cached version of the media hosted on an EOL server. The EOL version of the image will have been resized (preserving the aspect ratio) if the original image is larger than 460 pixels wide or 345 pixels in height.

Words that are part of some kind of specification, like I think "mediaURL" may be, should be quoted, and the documentation should point this out, and indicate that these terms should not be translated. Is that the case here?

Siebrand23:02, 14 August 2012

Okay, added quotes (and punctuation) to the English version.

Added to qqq: "This is API documentation. 'mediaURL' is a technical term and should remain untranslated"

Jrice (talk)20:50, 29 August 2012

If 'vetted' is given a value of '1', then only trusted content will be returned. If 'vetted' is '2', then only trusted and unreviewed content will be returned (untrusted content will not be returned). If 'vetted' is '3', then only unreviewed content will be returned. If 'vetted' is '4', then only untrusted content will be returned. The default is to return all content.

Is this some kind of API description? In that case, you may want to quote "vetted" and indicate in the message documentation that this term should remain untranslated. In any case, please document context.

Siebrand22:59, 14 August 2012

Updated to: "If 'vetted' is given a value of '1', then only trusted content will be returned. If 'vetted' is '2', then only trusted and unreviewed content will be returned (untrusted content will not be returned). The default is to return all content."

And added to qqq: "This is API documentation. 'vetted' should be left untranslated (it must be used as exactly the English string, 'vetted') and the digits (1, 2) should also remain arabic numerals."

Jrice (talk)20:46, 29 August 2012

(If this box is checked the classification will be shown on the names tab without having to "Show All Classifications".)

Should this message start with a capital and end with a period? In any case, please document.

Siebrand22:57, 14 August 2012

Yes; it's just informational, so I've also added parens... and changed it slightly, since the meaning has shifted since it was written: "(If this box is checked the classification will be shown on the names tab without having to \"Show All Classifications\".)"

Added to qqq:

"This is information shown only to admins on a form for editing hierarchies (AKA classifications, or "tress of life") that come from content partners. If it's checked, this hierarchy will be one of the 'default' classifications on the names tab. If it is left unchecked, the classification will be hidden to the user by default unless they click on a link to show all classifications."
