To developer : Please consider adding functions to EOL search

  • Its not about translation.

As a reader or user of thiis site, I hope two more functions to the EOL search.

1,Retaining the target word on searching box on the result page

Sometimes, people like me make typo or add more key words to re-try the search.
It will help users who are not so good at the languages currently available.

2,Highlight or turn into bold the target word in the article shown

Actually, I encountered my target word at the third line from the end of the text.
I think it will be helpful too:D

I'm releasing bottled message...

SkyDaisy9 (talk)14:24, 14 November 2014

Thanks for the comment.

I agree that highlighting the word and preserving the word typed in would be useful features. Thanks for the suggestion.

...We'll be re-vamping search in a few months, I'll keep these in mind when we get there.

About date display

I know this site is displayed date like "January 1 2013"(%{month} %{day}, %{year}). In Korean, date is showed like "2013년 1월 1일"(%{year}년 %{month} %{day}일). In Chinese and Japanese, date is showed like "2013年 1月 1日"(%{year}年 %{month} %{day}日). but site is use only "%{month} %{day}, %{year}".

아라다 알아 (talk)07:36, 18 January 2013

Apologies, this is (surprisingly or not) outside the scope of EOL translations. We rely on Sven Fuch's Rails I18n ( ) for date translations. If the format is incorrect, it would actually need to be fixed there.  :\

Jrice (talk)22:58, 28 January 2013

Is rails-i18n now being used? I recall that in the early days, there was a customised version in EOL...

아라, if you're interested, I could guide you to contributing to the rails i18n framework (if you don't know already or are not able to find out by yourself -- it would be a new thing for me too :P).

Siebrand23:25, 28 January 2013

You're actually right that we don't include the gem in our Gemfile, but we use it to "bootstrap" the translations, periodically.

That said, I'd like to stop doing that, and integrate it. The problem is that it seems to enforce "proper" pluralization in Russian and Arabic, so we'll either need to not include those (less desirable) or add "few" pluralizations based on the "other" translations that exist at the moment.

I've put a ticket to that effect into our queue, but I don't know if we'll get to it in the near-term.

THAT said, we can always "steal" from rails-i18n at any time it's convenient, without adopting the gem fully, so if inroads are made there, we'll gladly grab the data at that point in time.

Any status update, Jeremy?

Siebrand23:06, 2 December 2013

It's still on the TODO list, sorry. We've had some ... shall we say... "team restructuring" that has made it difficult to prioritize this task. Sorry!

Jrice (talk)19:55, 21 March 2014

What a typo: "Descriptions and articles"

Liuxinyu970226 (talk)14:25, 22 September 2014

Fixed. Fixed. Thanks!

Siebrand19:40, 23 October 2014

It seems the original sentence is incorrectly split.

Macofe (talk)21:41, 6 August 2014

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that, but when I looked it up, I do see that in our source file, it has two line breaks in it. Assuming that's the problem: thanks. :) Fixed.

Jrice (talk)15:50, 27 October 2014

typo: informaiton -> information.

Spotted by Ontsed.

The english text of this message seems to be blank. Is this on purpose? If so translators will need more information on what the message is used for.

Robby (talk)08:13, 16 March 2014

Oh, I would have no idea. I suppose you'd have to ask Siebrand. He deals with imports and would know the reasons for it, or how to rectify a mistake.

Each known URI in EOL's data store can have a definition associated with it. On the taxon page or in a search, this definition is displayed in a popup. In that popup is a link which allows the user to see the full glossary of URIs in EOL's data; see_in_data_glossary is the text that appears as that link. It is meant to capture the ability to see this definition in the context of all other definitions, and is meant to capture the fact that there is a separate 'data glossary' in addition to a more general EOL glossary (which we use for broader biological terms).

Jrice (talk)16:37, 21 March 2014

The spacing for this message around the span is inconsistent.

Resque is a tool ( ) used to track background jobs. This field is a label used on the administration page where the admin will see the status of the resque work queue. Notice 'Resque' is the specific name of the tool; don't translate that.

Text for the submit button on the donation page (on the form where the user enters the amount they wish to donate and agrees to pay that amount).

Use XHTML compliant break (<br />).

Indeed, thanks.

This is a really bad name. Sorry.

I've renamed this to "link_to_top_of_page", which should explain itself now.

Sorry again.

Some users are allowed to add new triplstore data to EOL. This is done using a small form, where the user needs to specify a relationship and an object. For clarity, we call the relationship a 'field', where the user can select such options as 'Preys On' or 'Body Mass' and the like, and later specify the value for that relationship/field. This string is used in the textarea of the form where the select that relationship. (But, again, we call it a 'field' on the site.)

Siebrand11:16, 8 December 2013

Wow, what a horribly-named string.  :|

I moved this to show_more_row_data_link and added the definition:

A link shown on the data tab of a taxon concept page where not all of the data could be shown by default; clicking on this link would show the remainder of the data.

Jrice (talk)14:57, 21 March 2014

Unrecognized Measurement Type URIs: Context needed.

Siebrand10:48, 8 December 2013

This is an option in a drop-down which allows administrators to see statistics about how often certain undesirable states occur in the data on EOL. In this case, the admin would be looking for data which has unrecognized measurement types (it's a technical term and should be translated as close to that has possible).

Jrice (talk)14:53, 21 March 2014

Context please.

Siebrand21:40, 8 December 2013

Hmmmn. Something is definitely up with duplication, here:

This is a poor label, so I'm moving it to "other_category_subtab", which makes it SLIGHTLY clearer, but also adding the description:

This is a subtab label used on the data tab of a taxon concept page to group data elements that have no other well-defined category.
