Is this a "to comment some preview" or "preview your comment"?

Lst (talk)08:57, 7 July 2015

Hi all,

From page: i select iNaturalist i get a full page of empty lines to be modified for french translation (browser is Chrome / last update)

Obviously there is a problem of limit check because achieved = 99%

Christian (talk)05:35, 19 July 2015

The following messages need documentation:

It seems that '@f' is for feminine and '@m' for masculine. And it seems that the gender depends on the words in the URL of each message: observation, note, place, etc.

Should we translate '@f' and '@m'? Should we use the first letter of the translation of feminine and masculine?

Who deleted the vote? Translations vary consideably, if the voter deleted his own vote, or someone deleted someone elses vote.

Purodha Blissenbach (talk)22:31, 24 June 2015

There are at least ten (10) empty messages in iNaturalist like this one.

Typo or a dialect writing?! Why not Romanian?

Liuxinyu970226 (talk)14:51, 2 February 2015

Hi - I don't think we (iNat) made this typo, I think its on the translatewiki side

Loarie (talk)03:28, 17 February 2015
Nemo (talk)22:50, 17 February 2015

Thanks guys - fixed on the iNat side should be fixed on the translate wiki side next time Nikerabbit pulls

Add insertables and checks for parameters if not present already for use in iNat project

Nikerabbit suggested adding insertables and checks for parameters if not present already to reduce errors introduced from parameters getting translated, see discussion here:

Loarie (talk)21:06, 3 February 2015

Can you work on it?

Nemo (talk)20:02, 16 February 2015

Hi Nemo and Nike - whats the status on this. By 'can you work on it?' you are referring to Nike, correct Nemo?

Loarie (talk)03:27, 17 February 2015

Loarie, actually I meant you. :D There are some examples in the translatewiki.git repo which you could imitate, if you want this to proceed faster. Otherwise, we'll get it done... at some point.

Nemo (talk)23:08, 17 February 2015

Needs more documentation, where this abbreviation comes from.

Liuxinyu970226 (talk)10:48, 12 January 2015

Hi Liuxinyu970226, apologies for the delay - you're asking what the string 'About' means? Its not an abbreviation. Its used in places on the site like the project page as a header for information about the project.

Loarie (talk)04:10, 20 January 2015

Getting registered on translatewiki

We have an open source social network with i18n support and a vibrant global community that has already been translated into several languages. How do we get iNaturalist loaded onto translate wiki so that our volunteers can more easily translate it into other languages? Thanks!

Loarie (talk)17:57, 4 December 2014

And here's the folder in the repo with the YAML files used by the i18n gem

Loarie (talk)18:01, 4 December 2014

Welcome! As Reedy told you we support YAML so that's fine. Some notes.

  1. We don't support es-MX and other sublocales (yet), is that a dealbreaker? By default "en" is "en-US" for us, but perhaps we can switch the meaning in import/export from your repo.
  2. We need message documentation for each string you have in your en.yml. You can create a qqq.yml as if you were translating to such a locale. (Assigning to you until this is done.)
  3. For plural, are you using rails-i18n rules as OSM? Translators will need to know as well.
Nemo (talk)18:23, 4 December 2014

Thanks Nemo:

1. Does translatewiki have other suggestions for how to deal with expressing differences in American English vs UK English, or Mexican Spanish vs Spain Spanish, etc?

2. we'll commit a message documentation qqq.yml file now

3. we're investigating how OSM handles plurals, but we are using basic built-in i18n rules, as can be seen toward the top of the en.yml file - is that no longer standard?

Loarie (talk)18:47, 4 December 2014
  1. We do have some sublocales here, e.g. en-gb. We tend to advise against them because usually they get dusty, but if you have an active translator base adding them shouldn't be a big deal AFAIK.
  2. Ok.
  3. I've not looked into what you're doing now, but we recommend/require using some standard system, usually backed by CLDR data. rails-i18n looks quite common.
Nemo (talk)18:55, 4 December 2014

1. since iNat is being localized nationally, e.g. & the sublocal thing comes up alot, but the good news is we do have active translator bases behind each national localization

2. Here's an initial commit of the message documentation file

3. OK - will look into this more...

Loarie (talk)19:27, 4 December 2014

1. The only sublocales we currently support are: en-US, es-ES, es-MX if that looks good can we close this issue (1)? (will we be able to add additional locals - i.e. yml files - once iNat is registered or is that a bottleneck?)

2. We'll continue to flesh out qqq.yml to annotate confusing or ambuguous terms, but is it really necessary for us to annotate every string? I've looked at some other examples of this file on translatewiki projects (e.g. and it doesn't look like annotating every string is the usual practice. If our qqq.yml looks like a good start can we close this issue (2)?

3. I now have a better understanding of rails-i18n pluralization which is what we're using since its built into rails. You mentioned that this plulralization was not convincing: Is that because you'd prefer it to be like:

   one: "%{count} observation"
   other: "%{count} observations"

(e.g. Because looking at other translatewiki projects, it looks like our existing syntax is used: If our pluralization system looks good, can we close this issue (3)?

Any other issues we need to address?

Loarie (talk)22:53, 5 December 2014

What's the "%b"?
