Ethnicities

Shouldn't we change the ethnicities (e.g. Tunisian, Kenyan, American, Dinka, Sudanese) to the ones that are present in the country where the translation will be used? And what is "Sf"?

B. Jankuloski21:09, 22 October 2010

All these look like sample lookup values, they are most probably editable in the application itself. But are they defined as "lookup values" only to allow for their translation, in a runtime multilingual environment where the same instance of the application would be used by users with several locales ? In that case, how will the application manage these translations ? I'm not sure that this "lookup" feature is stable or well defined functionally, notably because they seem to contain unrelated values of different types belonging to orthogonal sets, and these sets are too far from being complete for deployment of the application in various areas, and MFIs will likely work separately in distinct countries with distinct needs of precision for these values (in addition some infos collected may be illegal in some countries such as ethnicities).

Patchwork messages

are these patchwork messages? keys: thelinkstotheleft, thesearchtoolbelow, thetabsatthetop

Siebrand18:24, 16 October 2010

These keys may have been used for testing because they only appear in a single view that is not tied to any controller. I'll post on mifos list as well just to clarify.

Jasmine05:16, 17 October 2010

I've found that they appear in a help screen to describe the parts of the user interface, and explain where you can search for information in the application. Yes they look like patchwork, however they are most probably displayed with absolute positioning over an image, or within a bullet list.

Verdy p19:47, 21 October 2010

A couple of days ago I updated the help messages (ppp) for these three messages. Indeed they are definitely not patchwork messages. Somehow I did not recognise this thread as being related to it. :-(

kgh22:06, 21 October 2010

help messages ar in "/qqq", not "/ppp" I think...

Verdy p13:14, 22 October 2010

kgh13:16, 22 October 2010

Hey you all, just to clarify. The messages: thelasttimeyouloggedonwas thelinkstotheleft thesearchtoolbelow thetabsatthetop

are part of old code that was used for proof of concept. Please disregard these messages. I've submitted a patch to remove these from messages.properties

Meaning of messages

I am not sure what is meant with these two messages: ManageProducts.defineSavingsProducts.amountAppliesto ("Amount Applies to") and NotEmpty.savingsProduct.selectedGroupSavingsApproach ("Please select the Amount Applies to."). Sadly the page I hoped to be of help in this case is offline.

kgh21:41, 19 October 2010

KGH: I couldn't find an answer for this from looking at the pages where this message is defined. I'll post on the mailing list to see if we can get more info. (http://ci.mifos.org:8085/mifos/defineSavingsProduct.ftl)

Here is roughly what I did find: ManageProducts.defineSavingsProducts.amountAppliesto ("Amount Applies to") : This message is part of the form that defines or edits savings products. In here there is a section for "Targeted Deposits and Withdrawal Restrictions". The type of deposit can be mandatory or voluntary. The user can apply this amount to one of several options, and that is what the message "Amount Applies to" is referring. I think it basically says the targeted deposit can apply to one of the following options -- however, these options are not implemented in the code yet, so I don't know what they are.

NotEmpty.savingsProduct.selectedGroupSavingsApproach ("Please select the Amount Applies to."): This message is just an error message displayed when the user does not select an option to which the amount can be applied - so it is saying that you must choose to apply the amount to one of the options provided.

If I get a better answer from the mailing list, I'll be sure to update. Hope this helps a little.

Jasmine19:04, 22 October 2010

Hi Jasmine, thank you for your detailed information on this. It makes very good sense and helps to do the translation. Of cause it would be easier to know about the options which were not included into the code, but we should not have a big surprise here in the future. Still it would be easy to track this down in case of news on this.. Cheers and thanks again

What is an "a-loan"

A message contains "a-loan" and this is not in the glossary. What is it?

Siebrand22:18, 16 October 2010

It's probably related to another resource speaking about advance interests. I think the "a" stands for "advance" (i.e. paying a service provider or worker partly before the initially scheduled term, so that this money should be treated like a loan that generates interests that will be later substracted from the rest of the initially scheduled amount). In French I wound translate it as "prêt-avance" or even just "avance".

Advances granted to someone for a payment that would have been granted later do not necessarily have to be given with zero-cost (notably if this happens long before this scheduled term, i.e. more than 1 month), and an interest may be taken for this service. Advances may also be granted if it is in the interest of the payer for helping the completion of the project (for example to avoid penalties or to pay for resources needed for the project but whose costs have increased above the initially scheduled margin of profitability.

Why does this apply to microfinance? One: because it is for the security of the system : advances should not be abused, and must serve the interest of the work/business project to complete. Two: because advances are replacing effectively a loan that traditional banks would have given with some interest rate or against the payment of a fee, but the microfinance organism could grant it where a traditional bank would have refused it, or granted it at very costly conditions. As banks are often partners of microfinance institutions they are asked to control the projects and should monitor their own granted credits.

This is a complete sentence with should be completed with a full stop. The same applies to ViewOfficeHierarchy.checkthelevelstobeincluded ("Check the levels to be included").

kgh22:09, 18 October 2010

I have created http://mifosforge.jira.com/browse/MIFOS-3942 to add a full stop to all complete sentences.

kgh21:24, 18 October 2010

Thelasttimeyouloggedonwas ("The last time you logged on was 08/02/10") "The last time you logged on was 08/02/10" 08/02/10 displays the last login date and varies from login to login. Thus it should be repaced by some kind of parameter. Cheers

This message was part of a proof-of-concept. It has now been removed.

Stanley04:19, 19 October 2010

Ok, though I think, from the perspective of a user, that is is always useful to know about your last login. I see this as a tiny security instance.

More patchwork

key: deleteLoanProduct.areYouSure: appears to be a patchwork message with ...oductFailure.becauseLoansExist and possibly more messages. Also missing a question mark.

Siebrand18:25, 16 October 2010

This is another case where a message is defined but not used. I'm going to confirm this with mifos developers. I'm also going to find a way to search and delete all orphan messages. Before I go reinvent the wheel, Siebrand, do you know of any tool that does that?

Stanley05:45, 18 October 2010

Nope. Not aware of the existence of a tool that will do that for .properties files. It may also be tricky to automate it, if you're using code to compile the message keys used.

Siebrand06:53, 18 October 2010

Using exclamation marks and use punctuation for full sentences

"Client created successfully!" (key: ..cess.clientCreatedSuccessfully): no need to shout at users. A period should probably suffice.

Questionnaire / chg

Should it not be "One or more questions do not have the answer type specified." rather than "One or more questions do not have the question type specified." for Questionnaire-questionnaire.error.QuestionTypeNotProvided ("One or more questions do not have the question type specified.")?

kgh21:27, 6 October 2010

Indeed - really glad you caught this. Here's the note from our developer who's correcting this:

Thank you for pointing this out. The message must be "One or more questions do not have the answer type specified." I will correct this in the message files. I will also rename the constant to ANSWER_TYPE_NOT_PROVIDED = "questionnaire.error.AnswerTypeNotProvided" inside QuestionnaireConstants.java.

I have to thank you for looking into this matter. Cheers

Use consistent markup for referenced buttons

Mifos core messages should be reviewed for phrases like the following: "Complete the fields below. Then click Preview. Click Cancel to return to Admin without submitting information.". The referenced button texts should preferably be quoted.

Siebrand18:26, 16 October 2010

So you mean the message should display as follows:

Complete the fields below. Then click "Preview". Click "Cancel" to return to Admin without submitting information.

I guess your point is that the buttons should stand out. I agree. I'll make these changes, but would need to post on the mifos list to have someone else commit it if it seems good. I'll keep you posted.

obvious issues with userInterface/.../messages.properties

Edited by author.
Last edit: 14:42, 11 October 2010

Hi folks! The Mifos team wants to add more messages to twn (translatewiki.net) for L10n. We're trying to streamline the process by fixing issues with that resource bundle before requesting it be added to twn. Will you add obvious issues as responses to this discussion?

Or--twn staff--if it looks good enough, will you please add it? I think a new group called "User Interface" or whatever should be fine.

Meonkeys14:39, 11 October 2010

MaxSem asks what "englishChineseText=Chinese text" means

Meonkeys14:39, 11 October 2010

"englishChineseText=Chinese" is used in a freemarker file called "languages.ftl". However, the file isn't referenced anywhere. I'll ask on mifos list to see if anyone knows what the file is about.

Skwoka17:29, 11 October 2010

The message "englishChineseText" was created for a proof of concept. It is no longer used and therefore will be removed soon.

The following messages will be removed as well:

"englishChineseText", "chineseText" "englishArabicText", "arabicText" "englishHindiText", "hindiText" "englishFrenchText", "frenchText"

the content of {0} may affect wording in different languages

This question was originally posted on Mifos wiki (http://mifosforge.jira.com/wiki/display/MIFOS/Translator+Helpdesk). I've moved it here to centralize request/question management.

The subject of this discussion refers to this page: http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Mifos:Questionnaire-questionnaire.noresponse/qqq&action=edit&loadgroup=out-mifos-questionnaire

Skwoka18:41, 11 October 2010

The message "questionnaire.noresponse" gets displayed when the user fails to answer a mandatory question. The message is parameterized with question name: "Please specify {0}". Here is a sample message: "Please specify Number of electric fans". As one of the translators pointed out, this could be a problem for some languages.

To address this issue, I would like to propose the following: change "Please specify {0}" to "Please answer this question: {0}" (or something similar), where content of {0} will be the question name.
