Message not available for internationalisation

On the right hand side of the main page there is a section just below Widgets-widgets.badges.title ("Recent badges") called "tags" showing a selection of most used tags (it is a sort of tag cloud) for the group. So far it is not possible to translate the heading or at least I have not found the message. Please add this for support. Cheers

kgh20:18, 12 October 2010

I think that's Tags in Shapado - Layouts.

Siebrand18:21, 16 October 2010

That is what I thought too. However my translation for tags does not appear on the interface as the other translations of this message group do.

Message should be changed

Badges-badges.shared.pioneer.description ("Was one of the first users to register") "Be one of the first users to register" → "One of the first users to register". You are already registered as you receive this badge. Cheers

kgh14:21, 13 October 2010

Done Done Might take a few days to trickle through.

Siebrand17:59, 16 October 2010

Thank you! Thank you!

kgh21:56, 16 October 2010

Message should be changed 2

For reasios of consistency Badges-badges.shared.guru.name ("Guru") should be changed. "Guru" → "Outstanding answer" or "Very good answer" See also Badges-badges.shared.nice answer.name ("Nice answer"), Badges-badges.shared.good answer.name ("Good answer") and Badges-badges.shared.great answer.name ("Great answer").

kgh14:48, 13 October 2010

I updated the wording of many badge descriptions to make them all consistent. Thanks for pointing this out. Might take a few days to trickle through.

Translated messages may sometimes be too long

Questions-activerecord.attributes.question.votes ("Votes") translates into "Bewertungen" in German which contains 11 characters in a row. However this message can only handle two rows at 9 characters. I will now add a qqq addressing this. Please have a look at it. Additionally I do not know if an other languages ran into this problem. Perhaps it would be good to check this. The same applies to Questions-activerecord.attributes.question.views ("Views") and Questions-activerecord.attributes.question.answers ("Answers").

kgh20:31, 12 October 2010

You have it wrong :). This is a typical i18n issue: developers should allow translations to be longer (or shorter) compared to the original text, without compromising site design. The software should be changed to accommodate at least 200% of the width for short messages. FYI: StatusNet has a similar issue with the button "Send" that is on almost every page.

Siebrand07:21, 14 October 2010

This is very interesting to know. Shapado already supports this then there is a blanc character somewhere. Some languages, at least one I know, tend to be pretty beasty in that respect. ;-) I am sure that in some cases, there might be a way around if the translator is aware of this issue.

From translatewiki.net to shapado.com?

Do some one know how long it takes for at translation to make it on to Shapado? I'm asking because I just finished the Danish translation.

Emilkris3314:57, 13 October 2010

It's integrated in the software every other week or so, but to get on Shapado.com will take longer, because they run the Shapado releases.

Siebrand15:32, 13 October 2010

Thanks.

Emilkris3315:55, 13 October 2010

Message should be changed 3

Users-users.form.information ("Information") "Information" → "User information" to allow a precise idea of what is meant. Cheers

kgh15:13, 13 October 2010

Time that has passed since

a user was last seen, a user joined, a question was asked, etc. currently creates problems with messages (at least in German). I think it would be better to use only digits and not names for numbers which would make things easier (perhaps this will not solely help German localisation). However I cannot find the related messages right now to see if this would be sufficient (of cause including minor modifications to these messages) to help the cause. To have a list of the respective messages would be cool. Cheers

kgh22:20, 12 October 2010

Number conversion

If the number of votes, questions, views, reputation etc. exceeds 999 it gets converted. E. g. 1300 gets converted into 1.3K. This has no meaning in German and will not be widely understood. Instead it should show 1.3 TSD with a line break since it will not fit into the provided space. It should be possible to have this somehow though I think this nut is possibly hard to crack. Cheers

kgh21:57, 12 October 2010

Clarification needed

Widgets-widgets.top_groups.title ("Top 5 groups"): How is the status "top" of a group measured. Is it measured by e. g. recent activity, number of questions, number of users or even a combination of them? Thank you

kgh19:58, 12 October 2010

{{msg-shapado|Layouts-layouts.application.forgot|notext=yes}}

Context needed for a better translation in Galician. Thanks!

Wrong original message

Edited by author.
Last edit: 21:25, 29 August 2010

Hi, the message belongs to the message group Shapado - Open Requests: Openrequests-open_requests.edit.title ("Edit request to re-open"). Thus it should say something like "Edit request to re-open" instead of "Edit closing request" Cheers

kgh20:23, 29 August 2010

I'm sorry. Please clarify, because I read above that "Edit closing request" should be "Edit closing request" and both are the same.

Siebrand21:15, 29 August 2010

"e.g." not "ie."

In the following three messages, "ie." ("that is", with a missing dot) needs to be changed to "e.g." (for example). For a fun explanation, see: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/ie

McDutchie15:56, 24 August 2010

Done Done Fixed in Shapado. Might take a few days to trickle through.

Siebrand22:08, 25 August 2010

It should be "waiting for" or "awaiting", but not "awaiting for".

{{msg-shapado|Ads-ads.index.add adsense|notext=yes}}

Should refer to Google AdSense. Probably same for Ads-ads.index.add adbard and other advertisement services (if used).

EugeneZelenko14:16, 6 July 2010

Done Done Might take a few days before it trickles down to here.

Does Shapado:Imports-imports.subtabs.need confirmation.name/en: (Need confirmation), refer to a plural number of things (that "need confirmation")?

Hamilton Abreu23:48, 26 June 2010

I don't understand the rails code this is used in. I'll have to ask the developers.

Siebrand22:52, 28 June 2010

Layouts lego

What other messages are:

combined with?

Hamilton Abreu02:26, 27 June 2010

This is really crappy code from an i18n perspective. Basically they're gluing three text parts together. The code is below. I'll ask them to make a proper solution for this.

                .message.notice.highlight_for_user{:style => "padding: 8px 4px; font-weight: bold"}
                  =t(".welcome_from")
                  =link_to t("sessions.new.welcome_from_facebook"), oauth_authorize_path, :title => "Facebook", :id => "facebook_auth"
                  =t(".now")

The same code part exists for Twitter.

Siebrand22:50, 28 June 2010

"Monetizing"

In Shapado:Doc-doc.plans.start monetizing/en: (Start monetizing), what would be synonyms for this use of "monetizing"?

Hamilton Abreu12:18, 26 June 2010

"earning money"[1].

Siebrand20:19, 26 June 2010

"Constrains"

I believe the word "constrains" in:

is a typo and should be "constraints". Regarding what is meant, are these meant to be "requirements"/"requisites" necessary for the user to perform an action?

Hamilton Abreu02:08, 25 June 2010

Hi Hamilton, I have interpreted this as a limitation because of requirements/prerequisites. Cheers --kgh 12:10, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

kgh12:10, 25 June 2010

Yes. My difficulty with "constraints" is that a direct translation does not get us there. So, I need another term. For example, I've translated the second message as "List of reputation requirements for each action". In other words, x reputation points are required in order to do y, which seems to tie in with other material in the messages. But, is that what this means?

Hamilton Abreu12:22, 25 June 2010

Done Done I've changed the three occurances to "requirements".

Siebrand16:58, 25 June 2010

Thanks for sorting this out, Siebrand. I just made the amendments to de. Cheers --kgh 18:13, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Hamilton Abreu02:58, 25 June 2010

Hi Hamilton, this is a good question! I have interpreted "slug" as a question that has not been answered for quite some time. I am not sure if this is correct. Cheers --kgh 12:07, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

kgh12:07, 25 June 2010
  • "A slug is a few words that describe a post or a page. Slugs are usually a URL friendly version of the post title (which has been automatically generated by WordPress), but a slug can be anything you like. Slugs are meant to be used with permalinks as they help describe what the content at the URL is."[1]
  • "A slug is a part of a permalink that identifies a page using human-readable keywords [1], for example "Slug_(web_publishing)", rather than an opaque identifier such as the number of piece of content within a database, for example "4859604"."[2]
Siebrand17:20, 25 June 2010

Shall we then rephrase this to... hmmm... to... errr... "the group which our web publishing package chose to name:" :) Perhaps "the group named:" or "the group abbreviated as:"? "the group known as:"? Suggestions, kgh?

Hamilton Abreu17:44, 25 June 2010

I really love things like this. ;-) I am afraid that I do not have better ideas at the moment. Why not take the Dutch translation as a template: „Move to group:“ It is simple and clear and ignores slug. :-) --kgh 18:03, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

kgh18:03, 25 June 2010

Brilliant suggestion, if I may say so. Done!

"Announcement"

Is the word "announcement" in:

being used as a synonym for "advertisement" and "ad"?

Hamilton Abreu01:53, 25 June 2010

As far as I know more like a site notice, but I'll check.

Siebrand13:24, 25 June 2010

I thought the same, but there are no further messages referring to announcements (like "Create announcement", for example, which would then lead to the first message above).

Hamilton Abreu13:31, 25 June 2010

Talked with the developer. An announcement is indeed similar to the MediaWiki sitenotice: a site wide announcement, repeated on every page.

Siebrand17:18, 25 June 2010

Documented. Many thanks.
