I am a staff member of this project and project lead of the Language project

I try to commit translated messages once every day, most of the time in the evening (CET). Please do not request things from me directly, but use Support and Translating:Tasks. This will ensure centralised processing of everything, also when I am not active here.

For my other main accounts, see the Dutch language Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and OmegaWiki. Please keep Betawiki related issues on Betawiki.

Goals for MediaWiki localisation 2008

As stated in my posting An update on localisation in MediaWiki

  • core-mostused 98%: 120 or more (now: 108 - threshold 90%)
  • core 90%: 90 or more (now: 62 - threshold 73%)
  • wikimedia extensions 90%: 50 or more (now: 28 - threshold 59%)
  • extensions 65%: 20 or more (now: 19 - threshold 56%)

Threshold is the percentage of localisation for which the goal would be reached.

Big plans

  1. get AJAX support in Special:Translate (no more tabs)
  2. get a tag like <translateme id="someid"> on a page for dynamic translation groups and a language selector (will help multi language wikis tremendously)
  3. get native .po support for Translate (will enable support for more projects)
  4. get XML l10n format support for Translate (will enable support for Mozilla projects)
  5. get bi-directional support for Translate (see when messages have changes in a repository and update in Betawiki)
  6. hook Betawiki up to a Transifex server (easy commit and project/language lead final say)
  7. get many other open source projects in Betawiki and consolidate l10n efforts and translation communities (makes open source localisation work more efficiently and gives more challenges to translators)
  8. get terminology and TM support in Transifex (huge productivity and consistency gains - possibly hard feature, but OMG this would be so sweet)

Todo

  • Check all users and add home wiki. At Alexsh
  • Reminders to translators with low percentages translated. At arn:.
  • Advocate implementation of localisation in all extensions with messages (see status)
  • consider adding OpenID
  • prioritise ordering of extensions used in Wikimedia.

Feature requests

  • Actually export Freecol
  • Multiple message edit in UI (hard from an architectural point of view)
  • Multiple language edit in UI (hard from an architectural point of view)
  • Fuzzy localisation checks output (also for pages that do not exist but have a localisation, unless language is maintained outside bw)
  • some languages do not use plural or have to use invisible unicode characters (Khmer). Make it possible to suppress warnings on "warning category/language" pairs
  • populate local groups for easier language checking (group with messages using variables, messages using plural, messages using hard coded namespace names, possibly more) There are some issues with this at the moment
  • user defined fallback languages
  • special page that lists translation status of all message groups for one language. Should probably be cached for 3-4 hours to not be too expensive
  • inline editing of messages (using AJAX) (see how this is done in Pootle)
  • when messages contains !!FUZZY!!, add additional translation hint.
  • do not remove previous authors if present in i18n file
  • if a fall back language has been set, new translations will be filled with the contents of the fallback language. This should preferably be made configurable to the user in Special:Preferences (history).
  • add standard support for localisation of SpecialPage names in MediaWiki and Translate.
  • ignore trailing whitespace on export (or ignore it on save - or both)
  • stats for Freecol
  • Lockdown of languages (Nike's idea - no idea what he meant)
