Endonym for Nahuatl language
Hey Amir!
Marrovi, a Nahuatl Wikipedia editor I met at Wikimania, has asked me for advice on changing the endonym used for Nahuatl in MediaWiki/Wikimedia. (He says that the native name should be "Nahuatlahtolli" rather than just "Nahuatl"). I've asked him whether there was a community discussion, but haven't heard back yet.
How would the change be made? I read the FAQ on language names and looked at the CLDR website, but couldn't find anything for Nahuatl (nah) although I did see some references to specific dialects(?) of Nahuatl like Eastern Huasteca Nahuatl (nhe). Would we have to add a locale for nah?
Yeah, I met him, too - he's great!
Mainly, we'll need to change Names.php in core and langb.yaml in the ULS extension, and possibly some CLDR files, but I wonder about two things:
- Where exactly do they want the change to appear? Interlanguage links list? Are they sure that that's what they want?
- What exactly is the explanation for the change and what's the, um, reliable source for it?
