Who are Lushais?
Luseis (or Lushais, as known by the Colonial British) are one of the 11 clans of the Mizo tribe. During and before the 18th century, all the clans and sub-clans of the Mizo tribe speak their own language. The only thing which hold them together as a tribe is their religion, worshiping of the Heavenly Father (Pathian or Pu Vana).
Evolution of Lusei language as Mizo language
During the middle of 18th century, the Lusei clan starts having their own ruling dynasty from Sailo sub-clan and they are called LAL, who have supreme power in their jurisdictions. Having been organised, the Lusei Lals start conquering their neighbouring Clans and bring those clans into their home village. So, the other clans neighbouring Lusei are scattered while Luseis are more and more organised. Those clans who lived within Lusei village are now have to speak Lusei language as it was a Lal's language.
When the British conquered Mizoram (Ram means Land) and the missionaries entered in the end of 19th century, the missionaries used Lusei language to communicate with all the people of Mizo without mentioning their own clan/sub-clan language/dalects.
So, all these factors made Lusei langauge speak/understand by all the Mizo people. And, today, when we say Mizo language, it means Lusei language. In School syllabus also Mizo subject is there which was purely Lusei language.
