This template was created to prevent red links to wanted templates. These templates are not part of MediaWiki itself but are wiki pages whose content is dependent on each wiki (and may not exist with the same effect on all wikis, or this syntax between braces and looking like MediaWiki transclusions could be used for invoking some other special tags or built-in functions recognized by other engines than MediaWiki for specific projects)

It can be used to detect an incorrect use of the MediaWiki parser function {{GENDER:}} which requires the colon : before the first optional parameter (whose default value in MediaWiki is the current user name visiting the currently rendered webpage) followed by an optional ordered list of linguistic variants (each one prefixed by a vertical bar | and whose value will depend on the user's gender) up to the required two closing braces }}.

If what you see rendered in the translate interface is such wikitext and not one of the expected linguistic variants, make sure the translation matches the syntax used in the source (English) language, or report the issue to the package maintainer if the source message was incorrectly using the syntax (expecting a template transclusion, not working correctly on other wikis without this template).
