nl-be

IRC discussion. Moving this topic to the portal talk.

[16:29] <Hamaryns> Hi, the interface for nl-be says you should use vls instead. That is
bullshit, vls is a dialect in West-Flanders, nl-be is Dutch spoken in
Belgium, there is a big difference. Who can change that?
[16:29] <Hamaryns> Furthermore, nl-be should have default fallback nl.
[16:30] <siebrand> Hamaryns: hi. Strong words. From it I read that you disagree with the
current ISO 639-3, is that correct?
                   See http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=vls
[16:30] <siebrand> Hamaryns: It may be that 'vls' is being misused in the Wikimedia
universe for something completely different, but that doesn't make
                   what you say true.
[16:31] <siebrand> Hamaryns: In translatewiki.net nl-be is only used for one product,
                   being FreeCol.
[16:42] <Hamaryns> siebrand: hm, interesting, last time I checked Ethnologue only
included West-Vlaams under vls. But that is a while ago.
[16:42] <Hamaryns> Which makes you’re right
[16:42] <Hamaryns> Also, last time I checked, the vls messages really were dialectal
                   West-Vlaams. Terrible, really.
[16:43] <Hamaryns> But why not use nl-be for other projects? I have nl-be as my
prefered language for the Wiktionary interface, for example.
[16:43] <Hamaryns> And from time to time you do see a message which feels very ‘Hollands’.
[16:44] <Hamaryns> all right, I used to have nl-be, but it is not available
[16:46] <siebrand> Hamaryns: nl-be isn't a MediaWiki localisation code in MediaWiki
proper - as said, we only have it at twn because it pre-existed in
                   FreeCol.
[16:47] <Hamaryns> hm, allright then
[16:48] <Hamaryns> still: why not?
[16:48] <Hamaryns> shouldn’t be a problem if you set nl as default fallback
[17:06] <siebrand> Hamaryns: no one has given a convincing reason of introducing a
localisation for 'standard' Flemmish yet. If there is a Dutch/nl
message that is hard to understand for Dutch speaking people living
in Belgium, I think we should first try to resolve that in the nl
                   locale.
[17:07] <siebrand> Hamaryns: so if you find any, please address them at
[[Portal_talk:Nl]] and I'll definitely join the discussion.
[17:08] <Hamaryns> ACK
[17:08] <Hamaryns> bye
[17:08] <siebrand> Hamaryns: or fix them yourself with a comment that explains, etc.
