I am Steve and I'm working with written sign language. SignWriting is the script, created by Valerie Sutton over 30 years ago. We started working together over 6 years ago. Our collaboration has produced the Open Standards of SignWrting.

I have 3 main goals for using Translatewiki.net. First, I need to translate my documentation and extensions in other spoken languages.

Second, I am writing a SignWriting viewer extension that I hope will run on translatewiki.net and the WikiMedia production servers. The code will be written according to MediaWiki coding standards. The extension will need to pass a security review. I may try to use the WikiMedia SVN, or I may investigate the possibilities with GIT.

Third, I need help to redesign the MediaWiki User Interface so that localization is possible for sign language.

The foundational standard of SignWriting is the International SignWriting Alphabet. This will need to be translated into both spoken and signed languages.

The character encoding and data model of SignWriting is documented with Binary SignWriting.

The SignWriting Image Server will provide a SignWriting viewer and editor for web servers in general and a viewer for MediaWiki.

In the near future, I may ask translatewiki.net to add the SignWriting viewer extension. We'll need to decide between file system or database for the raster font. We'll need to decide between the data format of BSW and UTF-8. BSW is 2 byte characters represented as 4 hexadecimal characters. This is hello world in American Sign Langauge (ASL, language code ase) - 00801ce0f8d4f8ec8746f8eaf8fe 008032eaf89ef91432e1f897f8fb5ec0f8b1f901b3b4f8a9f8e5 ec20.

This same data can be written in unofficial UTF-8 using the plane 4 solution as 񀂀񁳠񏣔񏣬񈝆񏣪񏣾 񀂀񃋪񏢞񏤔񃋡񏢗񏣻񅻀񏢱񏤁񋎴񏢩񏣥 񎰠

I'd appreciate any feedback or ideas.

Lots to do,
-Steve
