Unspecified script variant

Several users have tried to translate using the unspecified script variant (which is still the one enabled). Some of them use the Latin script, others use the traditionam Mongolian script. This causes edit conflicts. For now the unspecifeid script variant is a mix, and translations should be transfered to either "/mnc-latn" or "mnc-mong". Note that the translate UI still does not allow selecting "mnc-latn" (even if Amire changed the link in the portal to replace "mnc" by "mnc-latn"), so to allow Latin-written translations to continue using the Translate UI, the unspecified script variant should be used only for Latin. If you want to have Mongolian script, these must be done in "mnc-Mong" (maybe Amire will soon enable that variant, just because he added it in the portal yesterday, without activating it for now; but there may be some configuration to do on servers and Pharicator to do that). Once this is done, the unspecified script variant should be cleaned, after transfering all remaining Latin-written or Mongolian-written translations to the appropriate variant code. This should also end the edit conflicts between Manchu translators. Note that the Manchu Wikipedia Incubator is showing both script variants, and is making links to each other on its main page in test. Note also that the Manchu Wikipedia Incubator also renders the Mongolian script vertically (rotating the page with lines written from left-to-right rows into top-to-bottom columns, with all gyphs rotated the same way).

However lines of vertical Mongolian text should then stack right-to-left with the top margin on the right (like in vertical Chinese) and page contents scrolling horizontally from right to left; but this is not enabled. This stacking may be in the reverse direction; the exact layout for stacking lines up to be decided and tested in Incubator (But there are other layout problems in MediaWiki to allow the full interface (including sidebars) to work correctly wit the traditional vertical orientation of the Mongolian script.

These page layout difficulties may also explain that the Latin romanization will still continue for some time to be the default. A full activation for the Mongolian script in its natural vertical orientation will need extra work (also needed if one wants to enable an optional traditional vertical presentation in Sinographic scripts, Yi, or SignWriting scripts, or for Japanese kanas, as a matter of user preferences; but note that unlike gyphs for the Mongolian script, most glyphs for Sinographic, Yi, and SignWriting scripts are not rotated when written vertically, except some punctuation signs, however fonts may contain some positioning adjustment to take into account their different alignments on different vertical medial baselines; such positioning adjustment is usually not needed in Opentype fonts for Mongolian script, which is a simple rotation of both lines and glyphs simultaneously along with their baseline and ascenders/descenders lines, so Mongolian fonts are simpler to develop and this explains why they are developed with all their glyphs rotated by default 90 degrees anti-clockwise: for the vertical presentation, CSS offers a vertical style which rotates glyphs and baselines automatically for Mongolian characters, as well as for Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew scripts... but not for sinograms, Yi, Bopomofo, kanas and SignWriting).

In translations, Mongolian-written message will be shown for now horizontally (with glyphs in their default orientation rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise, as specified in OpenType, and words written from left-to-right). -- Verdy p (talk) 06:17, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
