Challenges with translating

One of the biggest challenges I faced when translating MediaWiki into Pintupi-Luritja was the need to create new words for wiki-related concepts, instead of just using a bunch of English words.

Many of course are just transliterated from English (from the original word or from a synonym; e.g tjiiyinytji for "edit", transliterated from "change") while others are new words with Pintupi-Luritja grammar (e.g palyalpali for "user"; palyala = "use", -palyi = "person who does something"), for many I decided to use an existing word and give it another meaning. For example, for "administrator" I decided to use mayutju, which means "boss" or "manager" (a loan from English); for "history" I used yara which means "story"; and for "licence" I used wituṉi, which means "allow".
