Preference for imperative | 4 | 21:37, 29 November 2018 |
Hi Laura,
I work for iNaturalist and help coordinate our international network of members, which includes Naturalista in Mexico (https://www.naturalista.mx/). Cgalindo has worked hard to standardize Spanish across the entire site to use verbs in the imperative, but your edits changed verbs back to the infinitive. Can you undo those changes?
Apologies for any missteps on my part, as I am new to translate wiki and am not competent enough in Spanish to be useful as a translator myself.
Carrie
Hi, my apologies. I have completed your request, I think. If not, please let me know and I will review again.
Thanks very much, Laura. If there's a place to note a preference like imperative over infinitive, please let us know. Thanks again!
Hi, in general, I prefer the infinitive in the context of options and menus. I find it is the standard practice and it does away with the issue of deciding whether to use "tu" or "usted" in Spanish which is not standard in all Latin American countries. However, if an edtorial decision has been made to use the imperative voice in "tu" in Spanish, I am happy to comply.
Thanks Laura. Cgalindo made that editorial decision for Mexican Spanish for the Naturalista site. I went through and changed back some of the verbs for adding and nouns for flagging to what was there before since I know Cgalindo has tried hard to standardize things. Apart from adding documentation for every translation, have you come across a place where we could post preferred conventions so that translators can easily find them?
