Hello Amir. We’re organizing a hackathon to improve the ISA tool: m:Event:Wiki Mentor Africa Hackathon 2024. I'll be in charge of the technical documentation (so to speak...). In the program, we've reserved a slot of one hour (max) to talk about translatewiki on Friday mid afternoon 19th. The hackathon will take place online, on zoom. I wanted to know if you'd be available to talk briefly about translate wiki on that day. Or if you could record a short video presentation. Or if you could suggest someone to accompany us. MediaModeration
Hi there. I noticed that you removed the {{notranslate}} usages for a few messages for the MediaModeration extension. These messages are only intended for use in the English language, as the code that uses this will only produce an email in English (as English is the language used for sending emails to WMF staff). As such, this makes the translations that are being added unused and to remain unused for the long term.
Might it be possible to re-add the {{notranslate}} templates to all messages but the extension description to avoid wasting time for the translators? Dreamy Jazz (talk) 13:36, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
- To clarify these are the MediaWiki:Mediamoderation-email-body-intro/qqq, MediaWiki:Mediamoderation-email-body-files-missing-timestamp/qqq, and MediaWiki:Mediamoderation-email-subject/qqq messages. Dreamy Jazz (talk) 13:38, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Dreamy Jazz: I think the idea is that this extension could in theory be installed by third parties on wikis set to other languages than English, and for those it would be better to have the e-mails translated too. Those messages aren't very long, so I think it's okay to leave them as translatable even if they won't be used in Wikimedia's use case. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:17, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

- To answer:
- The use of English as the language is hard-coded. To make it possible to use any other language than
ena change to the PHP code would be needed. - The emails are only for WMF staff members (sent to Trust and Safety) and will never be sent to volunteers
- There is no plan to make the email localisable as this is not needed for the WMF. The email body for the previous implementation was not localisable either (see MediaWiki:Mediamoderation-email-body/qqq), so I used
{{notranslate}}to be consistent with this.

- The use of English was because the WMF staff needed it in English, and hard-coding it was the simpler solution than adding a config to control the language used in the emails.
- If there is disagreement with this here, I could add a config to control the language used in the email. My original feeling was that adding a configuration to control the language wasn't worth the extra time both for the translators and me at this point. But if the

- Ignored messages, which are marked as "notranslate" or "ignored" in qqq, are mostly for technical internal things that don't have any linguistic content at all, but they can be used for such cases.
