Vitor's justification is that purgar does not apply in this case, but does not state why not.
He seems to believe that the message is about reloading (recarregar) the page. He doesn't seem to understand that the message is about clearing the cached copy of the page from the cache.
"To clear" (limpar), is the first meaning of «purgar» in the dictionary entry that he linked. Therefore, the term is totally adequate.
In the English to Portuguese dictionary, the first translation to Portuguese of purge is limpar (to clear) and the second purgar, so the translation used is right on the money, of course.
In Portuguese IT, the operation «purge» has always been translated as purgar, alternative synonyms limpar (to clear), remover (to remove). Never recarregar (to reload).
Besides, the cheatsheet, which he ignores, has stated since 2011 that "purge" is translated as purgar, as you can see in p.
There are 11 other messages of MediaWiki with "purge" translated to purgar, including the header of the page where this message appears, which states "Purge this page?". It is not appropriate to proceed from that question and start the next sentence with "Reloading the page will", something that is completely different; you're either purging or reloading they're not synonyms.
If that wasn't enough, the translation of this page in Spanish it's "purgar", in Galician it's "purgar", in Brasilian Portuguese it's "purgar", in French it's "purger" and in English "to purge". This might mean that all these translators plus myself are wrong, and Vitor is right, but is quite unlikely.
The crux of it is that Vitor has not learnt a thing about cooperative editing. His instinct is always to go for the edit war. He sees himself as perched up high and everyone needs to come and justify themselves to him. He will then ponder whether to undo his changes or just ignore the message. Of course, he provided no such justification when he changed my original translation of the message, from "purgar" to his "recarregar".
