The meaning of "side-by-side" is too difficult to translate into Galician (I think this also happens in other languages), could you give me an optional but similar structure easier to translate? Thanks! --Toliño Fala aquí comigo 13:54, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

I put the Upper Sorbian expression bok po boku (side by side) behind the noun přehlad (preview). I don't know the Galician expression for side by side, in Spanish and Portuguese it is lado a lado. Isn't it possible to write in Galician Vista previa lado a lado or similar? --Michawiki 15:39, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
The problem isn't the translation: as you said, the translation may be Vista previa lado a lado, but the problem is that a person who reads this won't have an idea of what could this mean. --Toliño Fala aquí comigo 14:46, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

OK, so this is actually a pretty nifty feature that is still in heavy development. The current implementation will almost certainly not be the final one, and terminology is expected to change. Please have a look at the preview and the design description.

Essentially SideBySide is an advanced/enhanced version of LivePreview. I discussed the current concept name with Trevor, one of the Usability Initiative developers. He is very open to suggestions for a concept name that may be (a) better covering the functionality and (b) easier to translate. So please fire away "brainstorm" style. Trevor may be following this thread, and I will also make certain that your excellent suggestions will reach him. Cheers! Siebrand 23:19, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

My idea: Comparable preview, Switchable preview. --fryed-peach 07:52, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
  • I though about this and maybe what fryed-peach said Vista previa comparativa (Comparable preview) is better (in Galician). --Toliño Fala aquí comigo 14:46, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Something like Tabbed preview? Or, possibly, go back to something like Live preview, Quick preview, … --Mormegil 13:25, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Maybe I'm a German pedant :-) but for me comparable preview and Live preview mean that I can see changes without switching to another tab. Tabbed preview says something about the form of the preview. I think Quick preview is the best expression that says something about the use of this feature. Besides I consider Quick Preview best translatable. --Michawiki 14:49, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
  • I like Tabbed preview - it describes what it is in a non-technical way, but I think that Preview on a tab might be easier to translate. Cool feature, by the way. Lloffiwr 14:57, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

  • @Toliño et al: I don't think side-by-side is instantly understood by English speakers, either. I think comparative preview is the term that best expresses the idea of instant comparison of the wikitext and the parsed result thereof. It is also easy to translate, e.g. Interlingua: previsualisation comparative, Dutch: vergelijkende voorvertoning. (Note it should be comparative and not comparable which would imply it can be compared with something else, as opposed to comparison being a feature of the thing itself.) Alternatively, the original name live preview seems okay to me; in interlingua this would translate as previsualisation in directo. Hope this helps.

I like "Tabbed preview", although I'll translate something similar to "Preview on a tab": it's easier to translate as Lloffiwr said.
