Plural
I have been meaning to reply to your post on plural for ages, but it needs quite a bit of thought and I haven't the time to concentrate on this at present. This is just a quick note to say that as far as I understand it, mediawiki is in the process of adopting the CLDR rules for Mediawiki plurals. So I guess that maybe the developers will not try to change any mediawiki plural rules because any changes will soon be redundant. If I have guessed correctly, then the place to change the rules, if need be, will be on CLDR.
Please bear in mind that I might have got the story wrong with the changeover to CLDR - I haven't had the time to understand what the developers are doing with plural yet.
However, I am pretty sure that the changes to plural will mean that, as with other implementations which use CLDR, Mediawiki will have optional parameters for 0= and 1= available for use in all languages, which will sort out a lot of the problems with applying plural in different circumstances. See, this post is getting longer already!
Wow, these talk pages are getting fancy! I'm not sure I remember the details of my post anyway...or even where to find it now I come to think of it. From looking at CLDR a while back, it seems like it's a matter of understanding their categories and fitting into them rather than just supplying a description. I didn't find much explanation about how it was supposed to work anyway.
Your post was on the talk page of Plural/Mediawiki plural rules. If you want to get the rules changed on CLDR you will have to post a ticket on their tracker. It sounds from your description as if any set of plural rules codified in software for Irish is going to be a simplification. The Welsh rules on CLDR also miss out a lot of exceptions.
Can I suggest that you copy your original post on 'Talk:Plural/MediaWiki plural rules' to the talk page of the Irish portal? When MediaWiki eventually switches over to using cLDR plurals (not sure of the timing on this), it would also be useful to post a description of those rules to the Irish portal, or a sub-page of the Irish portal, so that all Irish translators know how to write the plural syntax for the projects using CLDR or MediaWiki.
