Translated messages may sometimes be too long

You have it wrong :). This is a typical i18n issue: developers should allow translations to be longer (or shorter) compared to the original text, without compromising site design. The software should be changed to accommodate at least 200% of the width for short messages. FYI: StatusNet has a similar issue with the button "Send" that is on almost every page.

This is very interesting to know. Shapado already supports this then there is a blanc character somewhere. Some languages, at least one I know, tend to be pretty beasty in that respect. ;-) I am sure that in some cases, there might be a way around if the translator is aware of this issue.
