When we translate at Betwawiki, this translations will also apear at ln.wiki or have we to translate at to places in the same time? When I edited this, the system says that links like [[Translating:Intro|Introducción a las traducciones]] and many others have some sort of problem in them (that is why is marked FUZZY) but I fail to see what the problem is. I asked SPQRobin about it and he told me it was OK and it is maybe something the software for some reason finds wrong. Can you have a look at it, please? You was add colon in this message. Sorry, but I was revert this one. Please compare this two pages English and Polish and take a look in difference with colons. In short in Polish language we use colon if after colon is list of words with commas, not only single word. If after message is a edit box with list of words we can remove colon too. It is simplification, not whole truth, but I am sure in forms we can remove most colons in Polish messages. Sp5uhe 18:17, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Siebrand. After careful consideration I feel the Irish language as a backup will not work on the Manx language version. While spoken Manx is certainly comprehensible to an Irish languagee speaker, written Manx has an orthographic system completely different to Irish. Most learners and speakers of Manx come from mainland Britain, Canada, the United States and continental Europe. I think English alone would be the best language to have as the back up. I'm not sure why but since the change back to English the following message keeps appearing when I try to translate any of the MediaWiki messages:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:

[edit] Check indicator for not translated technical messages

Hi Siebrand,

For Kotava (avk), I think that for several very technical messages, like the "EXIF", keeping the initial English message is more satisfying than trying to find a translation rather approximate and completely uncommon.

Thus I think that I'll validate a translation "in English" of these messages and thus I will create /avk underpages.

But, wouldn't it be interesting to have a checkbox indicator making it possible to indicate that it's a "translated" message but whose text is kept in English?

I think that for the constructed languages and a lot of "small" natural languages not having all the adequate technical vocabulary, that would be useful.

Your ideas are valid, but we have much more pressing development requirements, unfortunately. As for the vocabulary: if it does not exist, it should either be developed, or words should be loaned for languages that are either closely related that do have words for it, or from languages that are a logical choice to borrow the word(s) from. The vocabulary exists for Kotava, it's not a problem. But what does not exist for several very technical concepts, it's their noted use. And that then puts the eternal problem of the "transferred" concepts. For example in Turkish, exist "dark vowels" and "clear vowels". If one transfers word as word, in English, French or other language, that is widely nonsense. In Kotava, the concepts of "light" or spectrum of the rainbow colors are different from those in English. Regularly we discuss this kind of difficulties and any consensuses emerge, when there are specialists. We'll find the answers.

In Turkic languages (Turkish, Azeri, Uzbek, Kazakh, Tatar, Crimean Tatar, etc.) after numerals singular form is always used. E.g. in Crimean Tatar page = saife, pages = saifeler, 1 page = 1 saife, 5 pages = 5 saife (not 5 saifeler). In spite of this fact is it still necessary to use plural function everywhere? Thank you for the newsletter. It's imho a good idea, and I appreciate it. I would not mind a little more elaboration - that means an increase in size - although I did not miss anything particular but a link as to where / how to give feedback, which is why you now have it here :-)

I am especially grateful for having read that, User:MinuteElectron is working on a Babel Extension because I had similar plans and had collected lots of data for it already, pointing MinuteElectron to it may hopefully safe time.

Maybe this is of interest for you to know:

Ignoring leading/trailing whitespace in messages is not always a good idea. See [1] pointing to a common class of problems that may arise. While it may appear wise to rather have whitespace in the html surrounding messages, then, there are other instances where you shoud not or must not. E. g., a language may need to glue bits of text together, such as somtimes but not always having ", a relative sentence" wedged in between a word and a full stop. You would hate to have a space in front of a comma, at the wrong sice of an apostrophe, and many more like such, depending on language, and script.
I am going to work on the Tachelhit localization adding the native script (which I do not understand at all (yet), so I'll only be the coder of the automatic converson from/to Latin script, I shall not be able to add translations)
We will be creating a Krieewelsch Platt localization (no ISO code yet, a request for both ISO 639-2 and 639-3 shall be made asap), a local language of Krefeld which is between Westphalian (wep), Achterhoeks (act), Kölsch (ksh) and Limburgs (li). Lingustically it may be seen as a variety of Limburgs, but is written in a quite different spelling. KrefeldWiki will be using it, we are using a private ISO 639-2 code (qkp) temporarily, to start with.
I shall soon deliver a bunch of locally updated ksh message stuff directly to svn. After that, I will likely be using betawiki for further updates.

Question: Is mixing both commits to svn and localizing via Betawiki likely to be problematic or causing extra labour? Presuming, of course, one does not deliberately alter one message differently at two places at the same time. Thank you. --Purodha 04:10, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Quick response, will elaborate later: one of the big drawbacks of direct SVN commits is duplication of effort. Especially when source messages change, we cannot 'FUZZY' messages that do not have an entry in Betawiki. This means that the more localisation has been done outside of Betawiki, the more is expected of a maintainer. He has to watch changes to MessagesEn.php, changes to all messages in extensions. So if you want to save yourself a lot of that trouble, best use the gettext method, so you can translate offline, and we can import it here (and commit it from here). Thanks for all your feedback. Ah, I think you understand something wrong. We do not localise YouTube. We localise a MediaWiki extension that makes it possible to integrate YouTube video content in MediaWiki pages using a magic word. Diar Siebrand, please stop make changes like r34272, r34273 in SVN. They are pointless and breaking Kazakh interface. End-users are native Kazakhs, not English-speaking people and want a little bit of respect. If any foreigns will English they need just switch interface. Let's not start a fight. {{#special:}} hurts performance as much as any other magic word. Other translations don't use it, because the target page is shown only in the tooltip, and even that is hopefully fully localised after r34585. The solution isn't to start embedding more parser functions in messages. r34272 only changes some English message, maybe you got the wrong number here? Hello Siebrand Did someone contact kg.wiki? There is only one regularly user: http://kg.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Neruda who speaks kikongo and little french. Hi Siebrand: Please include the Ilokano language in the language translation project. I already completed Milestone 1 and working on Milestones 2 and 3. I even posted my claim after completing Milestone 1 only to realize afterwards that Ilokano is not included in the project. Other Philippine languages like Cebuano, Kapampangan, Iriga Bicolano and Hiligaynon are included but why Ilokano is left out? Next to Cebuano and Tagalog, Ilokano is the third most-spoken language in the Philippines and it has a total 10 million speakers. And it has already it's own wiki. Please consider. Some dipshit in the Wikimedia Foundation decided to create http://be-x-old.wikipedia.org, hence the language code 'be-x-old'. If the project were to be renamed to http://be-tarask.wikimedia.org we could do without the code... Siebrand 14:37, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
