Translating:Translators' forum merged to FAQ with general info links moved to mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Translation best practices and specific info to language portals.

What to do with this page? The discussion part belongs to this page probably, and the rest should be in the best practices documentation or something like that I guess?

This page is currently not linked to any other project pages. I think it was linked to the Support page at one time. So it would be good either to move the content elsewhere, or to create links to it from other project pages. Where is the 'best practices documentation'?

mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Translation best practices. That's meant to be very high-level, while this page seems to discuss only some very specific issues; Niklas doesn't want to maintain localisation manuals, so the content should either be merged into some existing resource (maybe the Wikibooks manual?). However, it seems to be mostly about conventions for some languages, so it could just be merged to their portals (or glossaries, or whatever).

This page was developed in response to some discussions amongst translators. It's aim is to provide a forum for discussion and cooperation between languages, as opposed to language portal talk pages, for discussion of translation matters of that language only. The concept of supplying examples from different languages on the page is to share ideas between languages that may be of use to other languages. The forum would have been of most use to translators of languages which don't have large communities of on-line translators, either professional or volunteer.

I agree that mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Translation best practices is not the place to transfer the content of the page to. I take the point that we don't want to try to develop full localisation manuals here, which would require too much effort to maintain. So why don't we wait a week or so to give some others the chance to discuss the proposed deletion of the page. If nobody objects, we could then transfer the content of the page to the FAQ page. After all, the section on localising verb forms was first developed as part of a discussion on Support, and FAQ is mainly a collection of things discussed on Support of ongoing interest to all users of the wiki. As you say, any discussions of translation matters can revert to the Support page

By the way, what Wikibooks manual are you referring to?

Almost a week has passed... I'm rather convinced we should merge (most of) that info to the relevant language portals. The Wikibooks manual I mentioned is the one linked from the mw page, m:b:FOSS Localization.

I was hoping this page would develop into a collection of language comparisons on some specific points. This is a subject matter that developers doing message and interface design work should be aware of, at least on a global level. In order to get to the condensed informations needed, we would first need to have individual examples of a large set of different languages.

Maybe my approch is somewhat too scientifically :-)

I would like the contents of this page kept in one way or another, since I am planning to do some work on language comparison on the long run, and it may be worth having this as reference material for it.

Lloffiwr added a FAQ entry. I think this should be part of the terminology project, as one of the standards each language needs to define.

On a side note, this section about future MediaWiki design is worth some inspection: mw:Athena#"Your" versus "My".

What does Nike think about the proposed extension of the terminology project to cover other translation issues?

Purodha - How about copying the section on verb forms + examples to a sub-page of your user page for your future reference?

I have moved the discussion on verb forms to the Support page, so that this is not lost when the page is deleted. I have copied the general discussion about verb forms to FAQ, and done a section of links for translators. The examples could be copied to that section also, but I am easy either way.

Concerning putting the examples on the language portals, I am not sure how much we want to encourage translation teams to record conventions and special things like PLURAL on the language portals in English as well as in their own languages. In practice, very few translation teams have made notes even in their own language. Getting us to put notes in a native language plus English might take some doing!

Some notes on Welsh verb forms are already on the Welsh language portal, in Welsh. So the notes on Welsh examples of verb forms on translators' forum can be deleted as far as I'm concerned. They would have been more useful if there had been more conributions than just Welsh and Colgonian.

There's no need for all languages to have standards in English too. We now have in the FAQ some suggestions about what standards each language should define for verbs, we can move the examples for German and Welsh to their portals (subpages) just as examples to be linked from the FAQ, if not used by those translators.

I urge to keep the English text. It may be helpful to both translators to all lanuages to read what others have choosen, as well as general public. Who know, for which languages there will be appropriate information, if we only offer a place where knoledgeable people can leave them?

I think that Nemo's latest suggestion is to create English sub-pages of language notes in each language portal for the languages which you and I gave examples for, and shift the examples there, and create links to the notes at the bottom of the FAQ section. Sounds workable.

I have created a sub-page to the Welsh portal and copied the notes on Welsh there. I've added a link to these notes to the FAQ.
