Hi IdrisSeid. Welcome to translatewiki.net!

You can now start translating.

You should also check the portal for your language, the link is in the sidebar. Other useful pages are linked in the menu next to this message.

Your translations are transferred to the standard product every few days or every few weeks, depending on the product. Please notice that it may take longer before you see your translation in the actual product.

We wish you a productive and pleasant stay. Please leave any questions on Support (the link is also available on any page, in the navigation sidebar). Cheers!

Translating

Welcome to translatewiki!

To which language do you plan to translate: Tigre, Tigrinya, Amharic, Arabic, or all of them? In which of them do you write the best? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 13:06, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
To Tigre please.
Thanks IdrisSeid (talk) 22:53, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Excellent.
I've added a list of links to your user page under the title "Links for Tigre". I recommend going through that list item by item from top to bottom, and translating each item completely.
If you are working with friends, I recommend that each of you picks a different item in the list and complete it.
Please ask me or the Support page if you have any questions. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 22:56, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi s. Amir E. Aharoni
I am unable to find the page "Links for Tigre", could you please send the link in this thread? IdrisSeid (talk) 23:15, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's on your user page. To get to your user page, click your username at the top of the page. Or simply click this link: User:IdrisSeid. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 23:25, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Great, thank you for the detailed information.
Before I start, may I know who chose or why has it been chosen for the language to be named to be ትግራይት (Tigrayit) instead of ትግሬ (Tigre)?
Is it is possible to have it changed please? If so, how could I do that? IdrisSeid (talk) 00:32, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
ትግራይት was configured here because that's the name used on the Ethnologue website, from which we take the names unless we have a reason to use something else.
It's technically possible to change it, although we usually try to do it only when there is a good reason for this. Why do you think that the name ትግሬ is better? Is ትግሬ used on other websites? I saw https://www.speaktigre.com/; are there any other websites in this language or about it? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 03:06, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Amir,
Thank you for bring up the link.
ትግራይት is just a word that is used to represent a lady from Tigray ( a region in Ethiopia). But Tigre is a attributed to people as well as the language Tigre = ትግሬ።
If you need more details, I can find for you a references to back up my claims.
Thanks IdrisSeid (talk) 23:57, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, references would be very useful. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 00:10, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi,
The following page uses the word Tigre instead of Tigrayit to represent the language as well as the people of Tigre
Klot Wulad Haiger - North America እግል ነስተብህል እቱ ለሃላ እልና ቃላት ህግያ ትግሬ
The author (owner) of the above page a renowned Tigre Journalist he opposed strongly the usage of the word Tgirayit (ቲግራይት)
Additionally, the Eritrean curriculum never uses the word Tigrayit to represent the people or the language.
The official national tv of Eritrea never uses the word Tigrayit, here is one example on how they wrote it in English.
News in Tigre
I hope this can help.
Thanks IdrisSeid (talk) 22:59, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
As seen on this cover of the page of the Eritrean national books of the Tigre language, the usage of Tigrayit (ትግራይት) doesn't exist. they use Tigre (ትግሬ). IdrisSeid (talk) 08:57, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I've also found several more sources that list ትግሬ is the name. We are going to update it soon.
In the meantime, you can continue translating as you have been doing till now. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:21, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you IdrisSeid (talk) 11:28, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
This is fully fixed now. Thank you for the request!
If you need any technical assistance, please ask any time. The best place for support questions is the page Support, but you can also ask me directly. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 20:01, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Amir
page Wp/tig/ጸግዳ ገጽ is showing wrong spelling. the "ጸግዳ ገጽ" should be spelled "አግዳ ገጽ". could you please help fixing that?
Also, I can see the main page's interface is now in Tigre, does this mean now we are close enough to be live in Wikipedia?
Thanks
Idris IdrisSeid (talk) 23:42, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi!
I don't see a page with the title ጸግዳ ገጽ anywhere on the Incubator.
If you want to rename a page, use the "Move" link on the right-hand sidebar. If you use the Tigre user interface, it's called "ነውክ". On the mobile interface, it appears under "More" in the sidebar (and you have to enable the Advanced mode in the mobile settings).
If you cannot find it, please let me know.
You can indeed use the Incubator and translatewiki websites with the Tigre user interfaces. You, @Bbeshir, and other Tigre translators have done excellent and fast works in the last couple of weeks, and you've translated enough for your language to be used as a user interface language. It is far from complete, and some things will still appear in English, and as you continue your translation work here, they'll gradually change into Tigre.
This certainly brings you closer to "graduating" from the Incubator and having a full-fledged live Wikipedia domain, but there are some more conditions. Briefly, these are the two most important things:
  • Complete the translation of the "Most used" messages here on translatewiki. Currently, it is are at 70%, and you need to get to 100%. After you complete it, it's recommended to translate other projects that appear in the list on your user page: Codex, Vector, Discussion tools, Mobile Frontend, etc.
  • Write more articles in the Incubator and get more people to write more articles in the Incubator. If you keep this level of activity, or better, if you get more activity, you will be approved.
The complete rules appear on this page: m:Language proposal policy. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 00:20, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Amire80
1. if I go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eritrea, then under my account choose "Translations" drop down menu, I am able to get to the interface where I can translate from English to Tigrnia. But Tigre is not yet listed as target language, is this something you're still working on.
2. Is "Translations" section available to everyone
3. Not sure if published "Translations" counts as activity, it is easier for my colleagues to translate than to author articles from scratch. Bbeshir (talk) 01:38, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Translation of Wikipedia articles using the tool that you are mentioning in #1 and #2 works for all the users who logged into their accounts. It is called "Content Translation" or "CX" for short. Unfortunately, however, you can only use it to translate into languages that already "graduated" from the Incubator to their own domain. (We are actually working on changing this, so that it will be available also for languages who have just started in the Incubator, but unfortunately, it will take a long time until it actually happens.)
As for #3, all the edits in the Incubator count as activity: Creating new articles from scratch, creating new articles by translating them from another language (and it doesn't matter which one), adding information to articles that you had already created, etc. Unfortunately, while in the Incubator, you can only translate articles manually and not using Content Translation tool. For example, you can open a window on your computer with an article in English, Tigrinya, Arabic, or another language you can read, open another window with the new article that you're creating in Tigre, look at the article in another language, write the translation into Tigre, and publish it. This is the best thing that I can offer for now. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 02:24, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh @IdrisSeid, I think I understand the problem with "ጸግዳ ገጽ" now.
The main page for the Incubator was initially created with a main page that has a name in English: incubator:Wp/tig/Main Page.
Now that your language works as a user interface language, Incubator's system is using the name for the Main Page that was exported from translatewiki. It was exported before you fixed it, and your fix is not on the Incubator yet.
I made the link from the page incubator:Wp/tig to the main page work correctly. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 02:41, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
