Hi FunLater. Welcome to translatewiki.net!

You can now start translating.

You should also check the portal for your language, the link is in the sidebar. Other useful pages are linked in the menu next to this message.

Your translations are transferred to the standard product every few days or every few weeks, depending on the product. Please notice that it may take longer before you see your translation in the actual product.

We wish you a productive and pleasant stay. Please leave any questions on Support (the link is also available on any page, in the navigation sidebar). Cheers!

Fallback and namespaces

Hi!

Thank you for translating a lot yesterday. You've helped to cross the threshold for full inclusion in the MediaWiki platform and enabling apc as a user interface language!

I need to do a few configuration fixes now to make it possible. I have a few questions:

  1. What should the fallback language be? If a message is not translated, in which language should it appear? Standard Arabic, English, something else?
  2. What are the namespace translations? You can see the list of what needs to be translated on the page Translating:MediaWiki#Translating namespace names.
  3. By default, should the language use Eastern Arabic numerals or Western Arabic numerals? Standard Arabic uses Western Arabic by default, and Eastern can be enabled in preferences.

Thank you so much!
1. Standard Arabic. If multiple can be chosen: Standard Arabic, then English.
2.
Media: ميديا
Special: مميز
Talk: نقاش
User: مستخدم
User talk: نقاش المستخدم
Wikipedia talk: نقاش ويكيبيديا
File: فايل
File talk: نقاش الفايل
MediaWiki: ميدياويكي
Template: قالب
Template talk: نقاش القالب
Help: مساعدة
Help talk: نقاش المساعدة
Category: تصنيف
Category talk: نقاش التصنيف
3. Same as Standard Arabic (default to Western, but allow Eastern)
Some questions:
  • How long does it take a message that's updated here to be updated in the interface? Is the process manual?
  • Can the namespace translations be changed just as easily as other translations? Since we don't have a consensus on the use of پ or ب in words such as Wikipedia.
  • Can the default numeral symbols be changed easily? I find Western Arabic numerals to be more understood, but there is no consensus to use either over the other.
A small request:
Could you not merge the translation until the PLURAL function is ready and properly used? The translation is quite broken right now. FunLater (talk) 13:51, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
For namespace names, do you need different names for User and User talk for users who are women?
For your other questions:
  • Briefly, messages updated here will appear in the interface towards the end of the next week. For the details, see Translating:MediaWiki.
  • It's fully automatic, not manual. Just write the translation, publish, and that's it—there's no step three!
  • No, namespaces are a bit harder to change. Specifically for the name "Wikipedia", however, it's not a problem because it's not actually used there. The "Wikipedia talk" namespace actually geta created only when the Wikipedia itself is created. So you have some more time to debate it :)
  • Changing the default later is mostly easy, just ask.
  • The translations will be merged, but it's not really a big deal because the plural will likely be fixed soon. (Weird fact: even though the software has had correct support for it for a long time, lots of plural translations for Standard Arabic had been wrong for years until the documentation was fixed in 2022.)

Oh, yes! For women it's:
مستخدمة
نقاش المستخدمة
Thank you :) FunLater (talk) 16:30, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks.
It's much less urgent, but it would also be nice to get translation for the Extensions namespaces: Module, Gadget, etc. See the other table on Translating:MediaWiki#Translating namespace names. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:55, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Deployed as interface language

Hi! Just letting you know that thanks to your work, Levantive Arabic can now be used as the interface language on translatewiki.net! Next week it will become usable on the Incubator.

As you've requested, messages that aren't translated into Levantive Arabic, are shown in Standard Arabic and messages that aren't translated into Standard Arabic will are shown in English. However, given that Standard Arabic's translation statistics are very good, this won't happen very frequently :)

You're welcome to change your interface language by clicking the button with the language name next to your username at the top of the page and selecting شامي. (If you have trouble finding in the list, try typing the code "apc" in the search box. The search should improve next week after another software update.)

So please try using the side in Levantine Arabic and see how well it works and whether it needs any more improvements. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 18:11, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Nice! Thank you so much, Amir. :) FunLater (talk) 18:22, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
