Modern Skin

On 03/22/2008 following news was posted, and the changes were made as proposed.

2008-03-22: New users are treated to a skin other than monobook: modern works better, we think

IMO, the modern skin is good, but it doesn't incorporate anywhere the LOGO of Betawiki. I think the monobook skin which only displays the logo should be kept as default.

Yes, you are right. Actually I checked the modern skin on my home wiki (mr.wiki). There the logo disappeared and then noted the comment. Anyhow, I liked the modern skin over monobook. Regards, --Kaustubh 07:46, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

multiple translations for namespace name possible?

Project:News/LiquidThreads says: “Soon the MediaWiki namespace Image will be renamed to File. Please update your namespace names now, and we will update them in MediaWiki as soon as the change happens for English.”

However, Special:AdvancedTranslate says: “Special page aliases and magic words can have multiple translations. … Skin names and namespaces can have only one translation” (emphasis added).

If I change the canonical localized namespace name for the Image/File namespace (to the localized equivalent of “File”), this means that I will break all wiki pages that use the old localized namespace name (the localized equivalent of “Image”). Breaking things is obviously a very bad idea. Is there a way to keep the old translation as a non-canonical alias? If yes, it would be a good idea to update the description given on Special:AdvancedTranslate accordingly. Thanks! --UV 08:43, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

All project pages for languages are displaying a worldwide map of contributors, using the "#ask:" special builting function. However, if the map is correctly attributed to OpenStreetMap, it displays an incorrect licence for "OpenStreetMap data" : CC-BY-SA (replaced several years ago) instead of the ODbL.

Actualyl the map does not display OpenStreetMap data directly but a map *rendered* from OpenStreetMap, using additional stylesheets, redering softwares, and servers to distribute tiles. These rendered "tiles" are effectively licenced under CC-BY-SA (but the condition does not come necessarily from OpenStreetMap, but from implementers of tile servers.

So I suggest to change the label to be more conforming to what is used on the OpenStreetMap site itself for its available maps, and to not misguide visitors.

If you use the Wikimedia tile servers instead of the OpenStreetMap tile servers, please refer to them to locate the appropriate attribution and licence terms. For now the indications are just incorrect, as people may think that all data displayed on the map from from OSM (this is not correct for the data locating users on the map, and which uses translatewiki.net own's resources) or that OSM data is licenced under CC-BY-SA (which it is not!).

For this reason, I also suggest to change the target of the link to a local HTML or wiki page on translatewiki.net, that will detail the conditions and will link to the appropriate data sources or service providers and their own licencing terms. Verdy p (talk) 19:37, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

This time in German. My UI language is Russian. After fetching with ?action=purge it shows in Russian. After fetching with ?setlang=fr it shows in French. After fetching with ?setlang=ru it shows... in French! And it keeps showing in French until I fetch again with ?action=purge.

It is probably translated into your language, see Template:ProcessNavigation for the languages in which it is translated.
