Namespaces

Hello again!

There's another little thing with which you can help: Namespaces.

You can read more about it here: Translating:MediaWiki#Translating namespace names.

I need translations for the names in the "Namespace name" column.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)09:05, 12 June 2022

Hey Amir!

Understood.I will translate the "namespace name" column into Tumbuka.

Thank you.

Here are the namespaces I can guess from the current translations, but it's possible that I'm wrong:

  • Media: Media; Vinthu (but what exactly does it mean?)
  • Talk: vyakudumbizgana; ntchezgo; vakudumbiskana; Kudumbizgana; pakuchezgela; Pochezgela (I recommend deciding on one word and using it consistently for both "talk" and "discussion". Of course, use the correct prefix according to the grammar, but the basic word should be the same everywhere. "Talk" and "Discussion" is usually the same thing. It's inconsistent in English for historical reasons, but it can be the same word in other language.)
  • User: Mgwiliski
  • File: Chinthu
  • Help: Owili

Again, it's quite possible that I'm wrong about these. Alos, I don't know how to write the "talk" namespaces.

Please select these words carefully, because it's a bit difficult to change them later ;)

Hi!

Again, thank you for your attention.

The English name "media",short for "multimedia" in Tumbuka translates "vinthu" which means it could be anything such as a photo,an audio file,a video, etc.

About being careful on words selection, thank you, however during translating there is always a hint bar on the right(hand) side that helps identify whether the word is a verb or a noun.So if it is being used as the noun,it will have a different spelling than it was a verb.

Thank you for remindance that the same word is needed for words with different spellings yet with the same meaning("talk" and "discussion").

And finally,i will be more specific now when choosing words and i will manually go through the already translated to decide which words should stand.

Thank you for making translatewiki.net an easier and a friendly place for beginners. You are being thanked for this Amir!

Hi!

Your translations have been deployed to the Tumbuka Wikipedia :)

Please use them, check whether they make sense in context, correct what's needed, add more, and invite your friends to translate.

Also, it would still be nice to get the namespace names.

Hello Amir, I am trying to translate Oppia AndroidItalic text but I am getting Translation to Tumbuka is disabled. at https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translate&group=oppia-android-app&language=tum&filter=%21translated&action=translate

Can you please help. Thanks.

You're not alone, in fact this is true for most languages because the team managing the Oppia Android subproject has disabled such translation for all languages except a few.

Their team is apparently limited, and they limit their interaction with translatewiki.net, focusing on more limited projects that they can sustain (including for the first basic lessons: they are managed on their own translation board, language per language for now, as they still don't seem to have the infrastructure needed to support more). However, they are attempting to increase participants and find resources. Instead they are working with local educational teams for which they intend to develop their concept (and see if it is viable by experimenting it locally and get more experience). Their project is interesting and ambitious, may prove to be useful later at larger scale, but Oppia is still young and needs to find its way. So lots of things are still not decided and they avoid dispersion in their immediate goals. For now their priority has been to make their project better known by largely translating only the main part of their website (and then attract people to get some intersting feedbacks), but not all of its contents and experimented tools in development: full translatability is not their immediate goal (Wikimedia also has such experimental projects, but its human, financial and technical resources are much more important to sustain them).

See Translating:Oppia.

Thank you so much for making me understand about what is going on. I thought it was just my language only. In fact, Oppia Android is not that important anyway. So I will just be focusing on important mediawiki messages. Thank you.
