December 2008

  • 2008-12-31: The last day of the year. Soon is it time to reflect on the year 2008 and set new goals for 2009. Thank you for your support and all your efforts!
  • 2008-12-30: Support was added for JS Kit (1)
  • 2008-12-28: Mantis internationalisation has gotten a big improvement now that multiple parameters in a message are numbered. Please check your messages with problems.
  • 2008-12-26: After the extremely busy 25 December 2008, today another busiest day ever has been measured. In total some 9,500 translations and corrections were made! Already after two days the "End of year translation rally" has already proved to be a huge success. Depending on funding that we hope to acquire, we will most definitely consider repeating events of this kind.
  • 2008-12-25: Today Betawiki is having its busiest day ever. By the end of the day, we will have gotten way past 5,000 translation edits (5,876 to be precise). That is more than three times the average number of translation edits. Thank you for your contributions!
  • 2008-12-24: Betawiki staff season greetings and translation bounty
  • 2008-12-20: Support was added for Secure Passwords (9), and Global User Rights (6)

  • 2008-12-15: Betawiki staff has mailed out its fourth newsletter. You did not get it? Confirm your e-mail!
  • 2008-12-15: We have had a long standing issue with edits by bots from localhost; the URLs in notification e-mails contained links to localhost. This should be fixed now.
  • 2008-12-04: Support was added for Link OpenID (6)
  • 2008-12-01: Another month has ended, and a new month has begun. The MediaWiki aggregated statistics were updated - get your friends that speak less resourced languages in, please, because we need their help making MediaWiki better!

November 2008

October 2008

September 2008

  • 2008-09-30: Support was added for Code Review (48)
  • 2008-09-30: Mantis support is no longer experimental.
  • 2008-09-17: pipe-separator (" | ") was added to enable localisation of user interface text containing " | " as a separator. We have changed it on Betawiki to " • ". Please report any remaining uses of the pipe sign as separator at Support.
  • 2008-09-09: Support was added for recognition of problematic messages in Mantis, and a bug was fixed in the recognition of problematic messages for FreeCol
  • 2008-09-09: All Mantis messages have been added, providing for proper fuzzy support.
  • 2008-09-09: Support was added for Other Sites (2)
  • 2008-09-07: Support was added for Mantis (1,158), a free popular web-based bugtracking system written in PHP. More information on the product can be found on its website.

  • 2008-09-04: Support was added for Discussion Threading (5)
  • 2008-09-03: Support was added for Category Watch (7). Messages for this extension are likely to change, as there are some i18n issues.

August 2008

  • 2008-08-31: Betawiki staff has mailed out its third monthly-ish newsletter. You did not get it? Get your e-mail confirmed!
  • 2008-08-31: Support was added for Close Wikis (22)
  • 2008-08-30: Pages have been created for all translations of all supported projects. This will improve support for fuzzying pages a lot, as we will now fuzzy every available translation, instead of only those made in Betawiki.
  • 2008-08-30: Because the extension of the week was inactive, we have now introduced extension of the month, which will start in September.
  • 2008-08-28: Editing was broken for about 8 minutes because of a broken software update (21:31-21:39 UTC).
  • 2008-08-26: We are rewriting and restructuring the documentation. Please bear with us and all help is welcome.
  • 2008-08-25: A new interwiki was added to refer to MediaWiki Subversion revisions. Example: mwr:39946.
  • 2008-08-24: 52 new MediaWiki core messages were added for a new feature Visual diff. We think there are still some issues with the current i18n implementation. Please report issues any ideas on Support.
  • 2008-08-24: The message groups for Wikia, Wikihow, Wikimedia, and Wikitravel have been updated.
  • 2008-08-22: Support was dropped for our gettext experiment with the Mobile Broadband Configuration Assistent. Unfortunately the Gnome translation community no longer wants to accept localisation updates from outside their own project. We think this means that as a FOSS community, we still have a lot to learn about communication, collaboration, and mutual respect.
  • 2008-08-16: Support was added for News Channel (7), Meta Keywords (1), and Delete Queue (100).
  • 2008-08-15: More support for localisation of special page names for MediaWiki extensions was added. The special page names can be translated on Special:Magic. Please remember to request a commit of Magic, Special Page names, Skin names or Namespaces on Translating:Tasks.
  • 2008-08-10: Support was added for Lua (8)
  • 2008-08-05: We have started to import *all* available core messages for MediaWiki. This will enable a more complete fuzzy policy. With this, we are also introducing an experimental two-way synchronisation for messages related to MediaWiki, guaranteeing a smoother collaboration with developers that work on localisations through other methods.
  • 2008-08-04: On translation pages a toolbox menu item was added that leads to a page displaying all pages with all translations for the message ("Other translations"). This was previously implemented in JavaScript and could not be localised. Please localise the Betawiki user interface and the Translate extension with priority, so you can feel very at home working in this environment.
  • 2008-08-04: The messages for the Mobile Broadband Configuration Assistant are now stable. Please help them get translated!
  • 2008-08-01: 21 MediaWiki core messages were changed to improve usability. Links were added and some rephrasing was done. Please check the fuzzied messages, and the problematic messages for your language.

List: ab, af, aln, am, an, ang, ar, arc, arn, arz, as, ast, avk, az, ba, bat-smg, bcc, bcl, be, be-tarask, bg, bi, bn, br, bs, bug, ca, cdo, ce, ceb, ch, co, crh-cyrl, crh-latn, cs, csb, cu, cy, da, de, de-formal, diq, dlc, dsb, dz, ee, el, en-gb, eo, es, et, eu, ext, fi, fiu-vro, fo, fr, frc, frp, fur, fy, ga, gag, gan, gd, gl, gn, grc, gsw, gu, gv, hak, haw, he, hi, hif-latn, hil, hr, hsb, ht, hu, hy, ia, id, ie, ig, ike-cans, ilo, io, is, it, ja, jut, jv, ka, kaa, kab, kk-arab, kk-cyrl, kk-latn, km, kn, ko, ksh, ku-arab, ku-latn, kv, la, lb, lfn, lg, li, lij, lmo, ln, lo, loz, lt, lv, mai, mdf, mg, mhr, mk, ml, mn, mr, ms, mt, mwl, mwv, my, myv, nah, nan, nap, nds, nds-nl, nds_nl, ne, new, niu, nl, nl-be, nn, no, nov, nso, oc, os, pa, pam, pap, pfl, pl, pms, pnt, ps, pt, pt-br, pt-pt, qu, rif, rm, rmy, ro, rtm, ru, ruq-cyrl, ruq-latn, sah, sc, scn, sco, sd, sdc, se, sei, sk, sl, sma, so, sq, sr, sr-ec, sr-el, srn, stq, su, sv, sw, sxu, szl, ta, te, tet, tg-cyrl, th, tk, tl, to, tr, ts, tt-cyrl, ttt, tyv, udm, uk, ur, uz, vec, vi, vls, vo, wa, war, wo, wuu, xmf, yi, yue, zea, zh-classical, zh-hans, zh-hant, zh-tw

July 2008

  • 2008-07-19: The Flagged Revs extension (10 message groups, 220+ messages) has been removed from the Wikimedia Extensions meta message group. The reason for this is that the extension is highly specialised and used only in the German language Wikipedia. Because of the message volume and the highly specialised terminology which is very hard to translate, it was completely misrepresenting the translation status of extensions used in Wikimedia in the statistics. A column has been added to the stats to report on the translation status of Flagged Revs separately.
  • 2008-07-18: In the past few days, staff has performed a quality check on MediaWiki core and extension messages. This resulted in about 2.000 changes, most of them improvements. Where we were not able, or certain, we could fix the issue with the message, we fuzzied. Please check and fix the fuzzied messages in core and core and extensions that are marked as problematic. Mind you: there can be false positives. Those should be quite obvious, though. After release of MediaWiki 1.13, 40-45 messages will be improved and fuzzied. Our quality assurance initiatives will continue!
  • 2008-07-14: Betawiki staff has mailed out its second monthly-ish newsletter. You did not get it? Get your e-mail confirmed!
  • 2008-07-13: Support was added for Bugzilla Reports (4) Removed again. Will probably be added sometime soon.
  • 2008-07-13: Summary of changes to MediaWiki core messages} since 1 July: 10 messages removed, 2 messages fuzzied, 6 messages added.
  • 2008-07-13: Message checks now run 4 times a day for all MediaWiki messages and extensions, and for FreeCol. Some checks still need improvement.
  • 2008-07-13: Daily updated statistics pages for FreeCol, Mobile Broadband Configuration Assistant, and Vocabulary trainer have been added.
  • 2008-07-13: Message groups have been added for Wikia, Wikihow and Wikitravel. The meta message groups have not been populated yet. Please use Support if you can give us a (semi) complete overview of the extensions any of these farms use. This way we aim to better facilitate the communities of those wikifarms. Additional goals are trying to get those farms to open more of their extensions and run more up-to-date versions of MediaWiki.
  • 2008-07-12: Support was added for Error Handler (20), and Social Profile User Stats (31).
  • 2008-07-12: FreeCol 0.8.0 release is coming soon. There is new strings to translate.

  • 2008-07-09: Support was added for Semantic Google Maps (2), and Wikimedia Messages (25).
  • 2008-07-09: MediaWiki is preparing for a 1.13 release. Complete your core message group now!
  • 2008-07-09: Support was removed for Word2MediaWikiPlus. The developers of the product did not live up to their promises. Our apologies for the time and effort you may have put into trying to get this product localised.
  • 2008-07-08: Graphs showing statistics are now available, see the language portals for some examples.
  • 2008-07-04: Support was added to MediaWiki for edit toolbar buttons localization.
  • 2008-07-01: Support was added for Random Users With Avatars (2), and Wiki Text Logged In Out (1).

  • 2008-06-25: Special:AdvancedTranslate (old Magic) was improved and now supports translating special page aliases for extensions that support it. Please report any problems and similar to Support.
  • 2008-06-25: Support for Gettext project is in a test phase. In the future we may add new projects to Betawiki that use Gettext, stay tuned.
  • 2008-06-25: Experimental XLIFF export support shows in the task list. If you work with tools that use XLIFF, contact User:Nike. It is not possible to import changes back, so don't use it!
  • 2008-06-17: We had about 10 minutes for planned but unannounced downtime for merging our changes to updated MediaWiki code. It took longer than expected, as TeliaSonera in the time of fiber optics can't build a network that doesn't have 35% packet loss in the wrong time. Also, committed some local changes to core, so we have fewer custom changes if they stick.
  • 2008-06-16: We are suffering some brokenness pending an update to the latest software. RecentChanges is now broken. Update: fixed; somewhat. We need to make some additional effort to conform to the structure change in MediaWiki within the next day. Some RecentChanges features may not work for now.
  • 2008-06-12: Next FreeCol release 0.7.4 is planned on Monday 2008-06-16. Now is a good time to check and improve translations in existing languages.
  • 2008-06-09: One core message was added: ipb tweak block ("[[:MediaWiki:Ipb tweak block/en]]").
  • 2008-06-09: Fuzzy messages are not counted as translated anymore at group statistics.
  • 2008-06-09: Support for Voctrain project has been added.
  • 2008-06-09: Support for additional namespaces for external message groups was added; export is said to be 5 times faster; after some initial problems Special:Recentchanges has been filled with new options.
  • 2008-06-02: This was my (User:Nike) first work day in my summer job where I will be expanding the functionality of the Translate extension. My first task is to have working general Gettext support.
  • 2008-06-02: We are now running lighttpd instead of apache2 as a web server. Unless there is problems, we will probably keep running lighttpd. Only user visible changes should be a new backups.translatewiki.net subdomain and that awstats are now behind http auth to keep robots etc out.
  • 2008-06-02: Support was added for Anti Bot (1), Tab 0 (1), and Piwik (5). The FlaggedRevs extension has been split into 10 message groups. A meta extension will be created for this.

  • 2008-05-31: Unplanned downtime form 15:51 to 17:46 UTC, we are still investigating these issues and apologise for any inconvenience cause by them.

A first mail to anyone with a confirmed e-mail address (even if opted out before that) is planned somewhere in the coming week. No newsletters will be delivered to users that have opted out after that. The newsletters will also be posted on-wiki (but that will not have that much impact if you are inactive...).

has registered an account "$2" with this email address on {{SITENAME}}.
