Welcome to the new support page

Welcome to the new support page that uses DiscussionTools instead of LiquidThreads! The old support page has been moved to Support/LiquidThreads. I will make and add an archive template that links to that and the very old archives shortly. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:53, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Is the Visual Editor still in beta on this wiki?

The recent activation of the Visual Editor on this wiki can be disabled in users preferences. However the message there says Visualeditor-preference-betatempdisable ("Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta")

This option currently works to disable the Visual Editor on this wiki, and works more like the similar option in Wikimedia, where it is no longer in beta (so it may use another message, or that message was locally modified in Wikimedia wikis to remove the wording that this disablement is only *temporary* for the beta period).

So is the VisualEditor deployed here still a beta version (with other pendings modifications or tests), or is it a permanent setting? Do you intend to remove the possibility to use the WikiCode editor and only use the VisualEditor or to allow users to choose at anytime?

Note that when this option is disabled, the "Edit" tab is still present at top of *viewed* page, there's no TWO different tabs for the editor; but when the editor is open anyway we can still switch from one to another (including when editing a message here in the talk page), except that now we can no longer sign the messages ourself using four tildes if we use the new button "Start a discussion" (using "Special:NewSection/Pagename", even if the page is not a talk page but in a content namespace...) instead of the "Edit" tab at top of pages, the default signature is just appended at end of the last paragraph (apparently after a space, and I'm not sure that custom signatures in user preferences are available with the new talk editor, even when using it in "Source" code mode). Same text in all WMF projects. I suggested rephrasing in Phab:T197282 in June 2018 already. Raymond 17:25, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
May be, in Wikimedia, that option was disabled since long (and notably when it was in beta, and I've never seen the need to turn it on later); I saw it here because you have placed a ""Start a discussion" (using "Special:NewSection/Pagename") above, which uses a different editor and assumes that the added section is for a talk page (which it is not here, in themain namespace, unless there's a special setting on this page so that it will create a section terminated by the user signature... it would be very bad when adding a new section to a Wikipedia article using this "Special:NewSection" tool, generated on pages using the magic keyword "__NEWSECTIONLINK__" that has no parameter at all about the kind of section to add, probably if we want to add a signed talk to any page (with an signature implicitly appended at end), this should be a different keyword such as "__NEWTALKSECTIONLINK__"). Adding a new language, ISO 639-3: ldn (Request)

Renewing now that we are in the DiscussionTools era :) (previously: Thread:Support/Adding a new language, ISO 639-3: ldn (Request)#Adding a new language, ISO 639-3: ldn (Request) 61112, see also phab:T302705 and I589017ac@gerrit ) Láadan is a constructed language (while checking to see if portal:ldn already existed, I found it was linked to by languages by language family/Artificial so I see TWiki considers this a relevant consideration for languages) with an Incubated Wikipedia, a set of dictionary entries, several source texts, a libre grammar, and various media hosted on Commons. Outside of the Wikimedia sphere, it is used for comics, music, and zines (among other applications as a general-purpose language). Álo (talk) 22:45, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

@Álo, I enabled it for localization here. I am sometimes reluctant about constructed languages because they have issues around usage and copyright, but it looks like it's not a problem in this case.
Note that even though I am also a member of Wikimedia's Language committee, the enabling here does not indicate the approval of Láadan as an eligible language according to the Wikimedia language policy. There will have to be a separate discussion about that. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:34, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
Excellent, áala and thank you! I will start translation of the core strings later this week. As for your other point, I understand from the guide you linked and other resources I have seen that interfacing with LangCom's requirements is a bit more involved; a next step I will work towards that I hope will be productive is seeing what it will take to allow page creation on the Wikipedia incubator... then it will be lower-barrier for Láadaná to contribute and demonstrate the abilities of the language community. Cheers and aril, Álo (talk) 12:46, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
Note that independantly of decision by Wikimedia's language committee, a language may be eligibile for translation here if it targets other non-Wikimedia wikis supported by TWN. So if you want to translate Freecol for example, you could ask that to Freecol maintainers. Whever a translation is possible here in TWN does not mean that it is accepted for use in Wikimedia wikis, and it should not even block other non-Wikiemdia wikis based on MediaWiki. The language committee of Wikimedia is just there to approve the creation and maintenance of Wikimedia wikis localized for a target default language. The rules are more relaxed for international wikis (including Wikimedia Commons or Wikidata) that can use a larger set of languages (and this is already the case for various localizations of MediaWiki itself, though the Languages Committee has just set some basic conditions for MediaWiki itself, i.e. ensuring conformance with BCP47 and maintaining this localization with enough contributors that can interact with other communities and respect the basic contributor rules, i.e. that work must remain open to other and new contributors). The creation of a Wikimedia wiki is not a preliminary requirement, just a final step once the MediaWiki localization is usable (there may be technical usability problems to fix and test ni Wikimedia Incubator) and enough stabilized, and there's a large enough community of contributors and cooperators with other wikimedia projects in other languages. As well, it's not required to have localized contents in Wikimedia Incubator: contents available in other existing projects (e.g. sections of Wikisource, parts of Wikidata, other open sourced projects...) are suitable, Wikimedia does not want to control and regulate all what users or organizations may want to create elsewhere using their own local policies and priorities. Verdy p (talk) 09:42, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Indeed! I just want to leave the language community as many options as are appropriate. Álo (talk) 21:34, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

Request to Mon translate names of languages

I would like to request permission to Mon translate the names of the languages, our requirements are shown in the following photo file, thanks. Music writer Dr.Intobesa of Japanese idol NMB48 and BNK48. (talk) 16:12, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

@咽頭べさ It it technically not possible to translate languages into other languages on translatewiki, because Wikimedia project are using the Unicode CLDR Project. These language files are copied into the CLDR extension of MediaWiki. Sadly Mon is not part of the Unicode CLDR Project. I suggest that you request addition of Mon to CLDR, see . This is quite a long process.
In the meantime we can create a local file for Mon in WMF Gerrit Either you submit a patch for LocalNamesMnw.php or you write down the translations like done for the North Frisian language (Frr): on a separate page here and I would be happy to submit this patch for you. Raymond 09:36, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much for this explanation, but I have no right to Mon translate it. Music writer Dr.Intobesa of Japanese idol NMB48 and BNK48. (talk) 16:45, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
Can I Mon translate it with Notepad software and send it to you?, see sample photo file , thanks.
Music writer Dr.Intobesa of Japanese idol NMB48 and BNK48. (talk) 17:45, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
@咽頭べさ I suggest that you publish your translation on User:咽頭べさ/LocalNamesMnw This way it's easiert to submit a patch and to refer to your work. Raymond 09:39, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
Okay, I will try my best, but I'm doing a lot of work on Mon Wiktionary, so I'll be working on the translation work gradually, thank you very much for your help. Music writer Dr.Intobesa of Japanese idol NMB48 and BNK48. (talk) 13:13, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
@咽頭べさ No problem. Please give me a ping once ready to submit. Raymond 14:48, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
Okay, I will try my best, but there is still a bit of work to be done on the current Mon translation. Music writer Dr.Intobesa of Japanese idol NMB48 and BNK48. (talk) 17:46, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
The things I copied and translated from LocalNamesEn.php have been completed, tell me what is still to be done, but these functions are something I have never done before, so I may have various difficulties, thanks. Music writer Dr.Intobesa of Japanese idol NMB48 and BNK48. (talk) 06:03, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
@咽頭べさ Thank you very much for your work. It would be useful for Mon if you could translate too. But only the $languageNames array. You can add these translations to User:咽頭べさ/LocalNamesMnw too. Raymond 09:05, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
@咽頭べさ I have submitted with Gerrit:899474 (pending review). Feel free to update User:咽頭べさ/LocalNamesMnw<nowiki> with further translations and give me a ping once ready. I will submit the new translations then. Raymond 10:28, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
