Requesting +2 privileges for translatewiki

Hello all, and ping especially @Amire80, @Nike, @Abijeet Patro, @Raymond and @Siebrand.

I am not quite sure what the process for this is, but Amir advised me to ask here. I would like to request +2 access for translatewiki in Gerrit to help out with various configuration changes where I can. You can see a list of my uploaded patches here, and a list of patches I've reviewed (or been added as reviewer on) here.

I understand the responsibility that comes with having +2 rights, and the extra duty to make sure you don't make a mess (and fix it if you do). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:12, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

@Jon Harald Søby I support your request. Raymond 06:36, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
I support it, too. Thanks for all your help! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:49, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
+1. Thanks for all your help! Abijeet Patro (talk) 14:03, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

Wikidata For Education translatewiki Ga Translatathon

Hi all, ping @Amire80, The Wikimedia Ghana User Group will be hosting a translatathon workshop for the GA Wikipedia in incubator as part of our Wikidata for Education Campaign. This workshop will happen in Accra, Ghana on Saturday, August 5, 2023 from 9 AM UTC. I will love to request support any of the admin may give me and my team and I look forward to an issue free Saturday for this workshop.

Find the ISO code for GA language below.

Thank You.

Owula kpakpo (talk) 19:16, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi!
The language is already configured, and it can even be used as a user interface language. I recommend switching your user interface to Ga, so you can experience and test it. To do it, click the language name at the top of the page next to your username, search for "Ga", and click it. (Because the language name is very short, it's a bit hard to find. As a trick, you can search for "Gaa", and then the results will be easier to see.)
The most essential preparation step for such an event is creating the user accounts. Note that the user accounts on translatewiki must be created separately from the accounts on Wikipedia. In addition, they have to be approved by an administrator to prevent spam. To ensure quick approval, please ask the participants to create the accounts as early as possible, and post the usernames here or in our Telegram group.
Another important preparation step is to learn to use the keyboards. If your participants don't have a way to type the special letters Ɛ Ŋ Ɔ, read the page mw:Help:Extension:UniversalLanguageSelector/Input methods/gaa-tilde, try it yourself, and teach other participants how to use it.
You will find many more tips on the page m:Best practices for translatewiki events. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 05:42, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

Please revert and/or delete all of User:Caden99's translations

So far, the Northern Saami, Vietnamese, and Chinese have all been identified as being low-to-no quality "translations" so IMO they should just be batch-deleted. I originally checked the Northern Saami ones because these lovely additions have broken the UI in many places and added garbage code to others, including this page itself, which now says in "Northern Saami" and broken code:

Rávvehat — Váhtat? Jearahusat? Molssaeavttut? Skriv beskjeden din nedenfor. — Geahččal maiddái Erenoamáš:MyLanguage/FAQ.FAQ dahje geahččal oaidnit Erenoamáš:WebChat.IRC dahje [Erenoamáš:WebChat.IRC]] https://t.me/translatewiki Telegram.

I don't think we should waste our time checking any of the other "translations"; they should just all be deleted outright or reverted back a different user's version if one existed. Kimberli Mäkäräinen (WMNO) (talk) 18:15, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Done, but there are changes that need manual handling: Special:Contributions/Caden99. Nike (talk) 18:38, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I've fixed the remaining NS one. @Minh Nguyễn, could please you take a look at the remaining Vietnamese ones? That then leaves zh-hans, hi, eo, and fa. @Nike: how long will it take the translation statistics to update? Kimberli Mäkäräinen (WMNO) (talk) 18:48, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
I reverted or retranslated the rest of the Vietnamese messages. Minh Nguyễn 💬 19:00, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you too! Kimberli Mäkäräinen (WMNO) (talk) 19:07, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
@Winston Sung, could you take a look at the remaining zh-hans ones, please? -Kimberli Mäkäräinen (WMNO) (talk) 19:10, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
I thought I've checked all of them, but it seems that I missed some changes.
Also, @Nike deleted some of the revisions I made when mass deleting. -- Winston Sung (talk) 00:29, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
That would be a bug in the Nuke extension. It should only delete pages where the user is the only editor. Nike (talk) 05:43, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
This user continues to pollute small wikipedias with this garbage. After it being very clearly pointed out that the Northern Saami "translations" were complete garbage, this user still bothered to add a machine-translated garbage article about Scratch on the Northern Saami wp today. It just beggars belief. -Kimberli Mäkäräinen (WMNO) (talk) 15:46, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
If anyone here is a member of SWMT, this user's contributions to many Wikipedias, Commons, and Wikidata should all be nuked as well. -Kimberli Mäkäräinen (WMNO) (talk) 15:48, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

Pintupi-Luritja translations not appearing on other wikis

I have translated over 50% of the most important messages into Pintupi-Luritja, yet I tried to view them on Commons by adding "?uselang=piu" and the page was shown entirely in English instead of Pintupi-Luritja, then I changed "piu" to "fr" and it was in French like normal. Why is this occurring for Pintupi-Luritja? Pintupi Luritja Guy (talk) 13:26, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for the translations! 50% of the most used messages is not enough. Your translations will start appearing here and on other MediaWiki websites several days after you complete all of it. If you manage to do it before Monday, you'll probably see it working already on Thursday. If you keep doing it as quickly as you have till now, you'll make it! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 18:30, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
Cool, thanks! I'll try and get to 70% by tomorrow if possible. Pintupi Luritja Guy (talk) 12:08, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
Just a reminder that there’s no new mediawiki release this week. You may see it next week. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/2023/32 Joseph (talk) 19:53, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
Oh, right. Thanks, @Joseph. So indeed, it will be seen on the Incubator the week after that if you finish it before Monday. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 20:02, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

Enabling MinT on translatewiki.net

We’re planning to enable the MinT (Machine in Translation) translation service on translatewiki.net on 26th, July, 2023. It will be available for supported languages in addition to Google Translate and Apertium.

MinT is a new translation service by the Wikimedia Foundation Language Team that is based on open source neural machine translation models and supports over 200 languages. The service is hosted in Wikimedia Foundation infrastructure, and it runs translation models that have been released by other organizations with an open source license.

You can read more about MinT and share your feedback in the project summary page or in the support page here. Please also go through the known issues, in particular this one that affects strings that contain wikitext markup.

Regards, Abijeet Patro (talk) 13:05, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

Does it support outputting Simplified Chinese (zh-hans) and Traditional Chinese (zh-hant) separately? Looking at that list I only found zh, which is not usable for Chinese translators. Diskdance (talk) 02:06, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
It's currently mapped to zh-hant. What would be ideal? Having these available separately?
Regards, Abijeet Patro (talk) 15:00, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
I got zh-hans translations in the curl response. Winston Sung (talk) 15:52, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
It would be good to have zh-hans and zh-hant separatedly. Winston Sung (talk) 15:53, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
@Abijeet Patro: Yes. Please provide zh-hans and zh-hant separately. Diskdance (talk) 07:51, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
MinT is now enabled! We look forward to receiving your feedback.
Regards, Abijeet Patro (talk) 12:11, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the quality of MinT translation in Dutch is so bad, you might as well not bother. McDutchie (talk) 10:43, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Translation administrator

Hi, I have now submitted quite a few translations, and ask if I could be a translation administrator, maybe my efforts are enough too for administrator or even bureaucrat permissions Justman10000 (talk) 14:49, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Request for add Ainu language

Hello, I would like to add Ainu as a language here. Information:

  • Name: Ainu
  • Native name: アィヌ イタㇰ(イタㇵ) / Айну итах(итак) / Ajnu(Aynu) itak(itax,itah)
  • Region: East Asia
  • Country: Japan and Russia
  • Continent: Eurasia
  • Family: language isolate / Ainuic
  • ISO code: ain
  • Script: Kana, Cyrillic, Latin
  • Written: left to right

Thanks! Pentester (talk) 12:01, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

Our policy requires the following: "that there should be at least one person with native or comparable proficiency willing to translate into the language."
Do you actually have native or comparable proficiency in Ainu? Several people asked to add content in it in the past, and every time, when we asked an actual expert to verify it, the expert said that it's not really Ainu. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 12:05, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I’m not a native speaker, and I can’t speak Ainu as well as native speakers, but such people surely exist even now. Native speakers were decreased, but nowadays speakers are increasing. It may be too early to request. Pentester (talk) 13:22, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
Indeed, it sounds like it's too early. I know that it's severely endangered, and I'd be happy to do something to help it gain more ground in the digital and in the real world, but simply adding it without actually having translators who know the language well can cause more harm than good if someone makes bad translations.
If you know people who can write it well and can bring them in, I'll be happy to add it to the configuration. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 13:47, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
To add some notes on to this from my knowledge (note that I don't speak Ainu nor am I Japanese):
  • Ainu is no longer written in Cyrillic as it is extinct in Russia and the Latin script is mostly used for transliteration (like how the Japanese use hiragana and katakana for actual writing but for romanisation they use rōmaji). My understanding is that Ainu is normally written in katakana.
  • Given that Ainu is native to Japan, it should fall back to Japanese, not English.
  • There is at least one Incubator project in Ainu, which is an Ainu test version of Wikipedia.
Pintupi Luritja Guy (talk) 13:31, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your advice. I will request again when the time comes. Pentester (talk) 05:26, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

Vertaling van artikels

Ek wil graag artikels vertaal. Ek is toelaat as 'n Wiki vertaler. Ek kry egter net boodskappe om te vertaal Hentie (talk) 07:30, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

@Hentie: Hello! Translatewiki.net is for translating the MediaWiki interface (and other software). If you wish to write or translate articles, you have to do that in the Afrikaans Wikipedia. You can use the Content Translation tool to translate articles from other languages if they don't already exist in Afrikaans. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:36, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

Moshtank (talk) 14:23, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

Filed a task around it on Phabricator: T344871. Hopefully, someone will take it up soon. Srishakatux (talk) 22:30, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
@Moshtank The task I filed was stalled. As per the guidelines around Determining_the_autonym, more evidence is required to prove the use of proposed new name. From a quick digging into one of the resources, I see that it uses the old name. Do you have a community discussion to point to? Srishakatux (talk) 01:50, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Request to add kne (Kankanaey language), an Austronesian language spoken in the Philippines

I request to add kne (Kankanaey language), an Austronesian language spoken in the Philippines. We will be working on two wiki projects in Wiki incubator this year. -- Exec8 (talk) 13:32, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Could you add more details to your request as per the guidelines listed here: Translatewiki.net languages#Enabling a new language for localisation at translatewiki.net? Also, any relevant links to community discussion. Srishakatux (talk) 21:10, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
