Meänkieli (fit) pages

Hello. I have put the deletion tag to Meänkieli pages created by me. They should be deleted, because I don't actually speak Meänkieli and was pressured into doing these edits by another user. These kind of language inaccuracies should be prevented, and because Meänkieli is mostly inactive here, I don't see them being improved. You can see the pages on my editing history. Ville Ullgren (talk) 09:34, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

@Ville Ullgren: Thank you for the honesty! I have deleted all the pages. I am also deleting all pages by User:Palmtree222, who is a known "language hijacker". Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:24, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jon Harald Søby: Thank you! I used to know this person, and he's also the person who made me do this along with a lot of other stuff, so it would be wise to be on the lookout for his edits in many places, such as Wikimedia Incubator. Ville Ullgren (talk) 14:36, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Request change the language name for (mnw)

I request that ဘာသာ မန် be renamed ဘာသာမန်, but I don't think using ဘာသာ မန် is appropriate, and I'm worried about future Mon text writing being affected, I would like to request that please change that, I love the Mon people so much that I am worried every day that the Mon texts will be damaged after my death, that's why I tried to write on the wiki so that Mon people can learn multiple languages, Please fulfill my request, thanks. 𝓓𝓻.𝓘𝓷𝓽𝓸𝓫𝓮𝓼𝓪|𝒯𝒶𝓁𝓀 10:56, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the request. I filed it in Phabricator.
Do you have examples from dictionaries or other websites where it is written "ဘာသာမန်"?
Also, wouldn't it be enough to write just "မန်"? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:04, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
@Amire80, Okay, I will provide explanations, dictionary and references.
  • Explanations
  1. If use ဘာသာ မန်, it's like closed your mouth when reading, if use text writing now, it will completely destroy the taste of reading( Example= if we had written and used Loveing as Love ing, imagine how annoying it would have been to read)
  2. If မန် is used, different meanings may be separated, I will continue to explain the different meanings of မန် in some dictionary texts.
  3. If ဘာသာမန် is used, only one meaning will come out (As an example, I would like to compare the Thai language= ภาษา+ဘာသာ+language มอญ+မန်+Mon=ภาษามอญဘာသာမန်, but Thai language is a language adopted by Mon and Khmer, so it has many similarities with Mon text writing ways( Example=นายနာဲ=Mr./this term has the same pronunciation and meaning, but this term comes from the Mon language)
  • မန် term meaning dictionary definitions
    Proper noun
  1. Mon Peguan (in old lit. Reman).
    1. ကောန်မန် = a Mon
    2. ဘာသာမန် = Mon language
    3. ရးမန်ပိ = three Mon provinces {namely ဖာသီ(မ်)၊ ဟံသာဝတဳ၊ မုဟ်တၟံ(အ်)}.
    4. ကောန်မန်ပိ = the three Mon tribes {traditionally မန်ညှ the Mon Hnya whose settle down in မုဟ်တၟံ(အ်) Muhtamoh or Mattaban province. မန်ဒ the Mon Dae whose settle down in ဟံသာဝတဳ Hongsarwaetoi or Pegu province. မန်ဒိုၚ် the Mon Diung whose settled down in ဖာသဳ(မ်) (Pharsam or Bessein province}. Their traditionally worshiped practices were different.
    5. မန်ညှ = the Mon Hna worshipped clothes rings and other decorations.
    6. မန်ဒိုၚ် the Mon Diung worshipped သၠသိုတ် the leaf used in Brahmanical rites and မန်ဒ the Mon Dae worshipped coconut spirit.
    7. ဟဳုအေရပ်မန် = to speak Mon.
    8. ဍုၚ်မန်ဗၟာ = Burma

(Note=I was very shocked to find that some modules of English Wiktionary used Talaing in a vulgar way, and I was very angry about that matter, but no matter how angry I was, I couldn't do anything because I didn't have the right to act or speak, and my account was banned, it's true that I will forever hate some of the admins as long as they don't delete the issue, but I couldn't do anything because some admins have the ability to lie to convince others, but if I keep talking, I will have to create new accusations for them, no matter how much evidence I showed, I was always defeated by the power of their lies. The name Talaing has absolutely nothing to do with Mon people and has never existed in Mon history. The name Talaing is a hate word coined by the Burmese to denigrate the Mon people. when call the Mon people the name Talaing, it reminds us of how the Burmese killed the Mon people inhumanely in the past. until today, the lack of Mon text knowledge among young Mon people is because they are afraid to learn Mon text. The reason is that the Burmese government calls the Mon text a rebel text and arrests those who teach the Mon text, because of this issue, the Mon people took up arms and started a revolution for more than 60 years with the aim of preventing their literature and culture from disappearing, also on the wiki, if there is an issue that will affect Mon literature and Mon culture, I will fight no matter how many accounts are blocked, my duty is to protect Mon literature and Mon culture as long as I live, but my statement is understood by anyone who sympathizes with the feelings of others, but we are the people who have been crying for many years because of the ethnic oppression of the Burman people)

  • Verb

A term derived from the मन्त्र of the Sanskrit language

  1. to infuse healing virus into {water medicine} by recitation of mantras to repeat a charm or magical formula recite mantra utter mystic words to heal or word of evil. [id.] ဗဂိုဟ်မန်။
  • Noun
  1. charm or magical formula.
  • Verb 2
  1. to repeat a charm using “ဥုံ(မ်) oom ऒम्”.
  • References
  1. Mon news
  2. Rice news
I think the information I have given you is enough, thanks.--𝓓𝓻.𝓘𝓷𝓽𝓸𝓫𝓮𝓼𝓪|𝒯𝒶𝓁𝓀 06:19, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Import a poedit file

Hi, I managed to export a Poedit file for offline translation, but I can't find where to re-import the file. Do I need special rights?

Thanks

Troer56 (talk) 13:24, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

@Troer56: Yes, you need some special rights. The procedure to get those rights is explained in Translating:Offline. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:16, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you ! Troer56 (talk) 18:07, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Votic Mediawiki translations

Hi. I've been looking at the Votic Wikipedia and Translatewiki for the past few days, and I've noticed something worrying: all of the main editors here (Paivud, Andrijko Z., Aig mest ei varasta, 2Q) have also been some of the main contributors on the Votic test wiki on Wikimedia Incubator back in the day, which was confirmed to have dubious quality (proof shown here: https://incubator.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Tamara_Ustinova). Knowing this, plus the fact that none of the contributors seem to even know Votic (some claim to, but it's doubtful knowing the context), the translations here almost definitely contain severe language inaccuracies, which means that all of the Votic translations here should be deleted, considering the very low chance for proficient speaker contributers to come and fix the situation, and the fact that all of this would need to be retranslated anyway. John k. (talk) 10:35, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello again. I'm not sure if this is too big of a request or if this post is just getting ignored. This is a serious request, and should be taken seriously, and I don't want it to be tossed to the side. John k. (talk) 06:24, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Request to add Ume Sámi

Hi, I would like to request that Ume Sámi is added as a possible translation language here. It's one of the smallest Sámi languages in the Scandinavian part of the traditional Sámi settlement area, but with a lively and ambitious language revitalization community. Therefore I think there's potential to develop a Ume Sámi wikipedia in the long run.

Since 2016 it's recognized as its own language in Sweden, and since 2023 in Norway. I would reckon the language has about the same conditions as Inari Sámi, which has its own Wiki.

The ISO 693-3 code is "sju", and here's the article on the language: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ume_S%C3%A1mi

I'd like to have the language added here so the process with creating content in the Incubator can be started, with the long-term goal of having an Ume Sámi Wikipedia version running. I myself am a speaker of Ume Sámi. JuovakenSammal (talk) 15:28, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

@JuovakenSammal: Hi! This is really cool. I work in Wikimedia Norge, and we try to support Sámi languages in whatever way we can, so I'd be very interested in having a short video meeting or phone call about this, if you're comfortable with that. I can also help set up the language code for translation here. If you are ok with it, please feel free to send me an email at jhsoby@wikimedia.no – if not, that's also ok, we'll still be able to figure stuff out. MediaWiki:Cldr-desc/sr-cyrl

Updated message 26.9, still not deployed

PS: My hunch, transition sr-ec -> sr-cyrl not done properly or something related Milićević (talk) 10:21, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

We don't use the code sr-cyrl at translatewiki.net at this point of time. Nike (talk) 11:28, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
I wish @Winston Sung know that Milićević (talk) 13:37, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, my bad. -- Winston Sung (talk) 15:50, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
Should be all reverted. -- Winston Sung (talk) 17:14, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Removing FUZZY

Hi. Is there a way to remove the FUZZY tag in MediaWiki:Mwe-upwiz-source-ownwork-origin-option-others-unknown-warning/sl? The message should point to the localized version of WM Commons' Village pump in Slovene, so the link should be COM:PL instead of COM:VPC. --Eleassar (talk) 21:39, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

@Eleassar: Hi, I've tried to fix it by adding the message to validation-exclusion-list.php, but it doesn't seem to be working for some reason. Hopefully someone else will be able to figure out why that's not working. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 23:19, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Jon Harald Søby. Thanks for the edit. I have removed the 'fuzzy' mark in the code and the message seems fine now. --Eleassar (talk) 12:16, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

@Eleassar: Ah, excellent! Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:18, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

Apparently, it takes two users for such edits. --Eleassar (talk) 22:24, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

Wrong name

Crimean Tatar (Romania) [crh-ro] is actually known as Dobrujan Tatar. I want to request to rename it. Also in Romania "tătară" is mostly called for Dobrujan Tatar, for Kazan Tatar "tătară kazană" and for Crimean Tatar "tătară crimeeană". Zolgoyo (talk) 16:37, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

You keep asking to change these names, but it's really hard to do it, because it's unclear to which instance are you referring. Where does it appear? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:32, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
For example in Translatewiki.net (language Portals, Active languages...), in Wikidata, actually in all Wikimedia the code crh-ro appears with the label Crimean Tatar (Romania) and I recommend to use Dobrujan Tatar. Zolgoyo (talk) 09:58, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

Request for translatewiki - Kanuri code

Hi I am requesting for linking of translate wiki to Kanuri central. (knc) Mohammedbama123 (talk) 05:04, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

I'll check this, thanks. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 03:22, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

please do not include filename in translation source.

For translation segments, I find it not reasonable to include stings ending with .png or any image extension: at Translations:Wikimedia Apps/Team/Android/Anti Vandalism/18/ja, I have bolded the part as below to what part you need to enclose in tvar tags, so that the filename is masked and translators will not care to put them into non-en/non-original language.

Of course you see what will happen if for example the first line have been translated the filename part, as well as after the | (bar): to give an example, the left part to the bar is the file name, you should not target as to translate. ファイル:編集巡回- 試作版 - 編集.png|アプリ内でツールを探す

I copy what is offered to translate below, and as I proofread, it looks like causing waste of time to check or trapping innocent junior translators trying to contribute. And on mediawiki, that is enough to be suspended.

FYI, Initially filed at mediawiki and got advice to come here. Cheers, -- Omotecho (talk) 02:19, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

@Omotecho: Agreed, those should be put inside <tvar> tags, but it doesn't really have anything to do with Translatewiki. You were on the right wiki initially, but it's would be better to report it on that page's talk page: mw:Talk:Wikimedia Apps/Team/Android/Anti Vandalism. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:53, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

What are we supposed to do when context simply isn't there?

Like translating "Unknown" into Spanish, where it could be four different words depending on gender and on singular vs. plural? Jmabel (talk) 07:42, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

@Jmabel: The best approach would be to ask in this very forum about the specific message you're wondering about. Oftentimes, someone here is able to figure out the context (and then we can add it to the message documentation), and if not, we can raise the issue with the developers to get the necessary context. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 05:59, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. In four days I've long since forgotten where this came up, I'm afraid, but I'll know next time. - Jmabel (talk) 07:47, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
