Language in edit summaries

Hi,

In this edit you wrote an unacceptable edit summary. I don't know the language and I cannot say anything about the content of the translation, but you must not use such words about other people's work under any circumstances. It's enough to say that it's wrong.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)09:50, 7 December 2012

I'll not do it if it's not good. My English is not too good; all the words I learned from my fellows, told me to be bad. And plz check their posts here and also when they're revert my edits. And plz tell me what to say if they're adding words neglecting the sense of the term should be.

tari Buttar (talk)14:23, 7 December 2012

How poor excuse TariButtar use all the time he is rude to everybody, and then when outside peoples come to tell he is wrong how poor same excuse he use "My English is not too good" Look his wdit at the Punjabi language Wikipedia. Only a policeman, nothing else. Please do somthing constructive.

Please stop adding your rubbish here

We have spoken about you, your pseudo words, and your unnecessary use of Bindis. Please stop your nonsense as you used these rubbish words without consensus either. The words that I used were the words that were being used at the wiki years before you came along. Before you insert your rubbish here please go to the wiki and gain consensus for them because these words that I am using are the words that were in use for many years until you dumped that rubbish over them.

VibhasKS (talk)09:18, 23 November 2012

"You both have a community consensus before let it not be changed till them. Plz work in the wiki way"

Firstly, the names I inserted were the names that were used for years and years until you pushed your rubbish over them. Rather you first get a consensus because I'm putting back the words that they were for years and years.

You say please use the wiki way? What do you know about the wiki way? You are happy to call Hindi a rubbish language and happy to deny the fact that Hindus use Punjabi and you profess your personal feelings against them in articles and now you are the proffesor of the wiki style. It has been said to you numerous times that you need to learn and stop your nonsense. Please make amends now.

VibhasKS (talk)17:56, 24 November 2012

Can you first gain consensus for your words before pushing them over the words that have been there for years and years. I do not see any consensus for gall bat and vartonkar so please stop. You are calling them my personal preferences but they have been there before for years and years. Please I'm asking you nicely to please stop.

Names of namespaces

Okay. Now please help. I want to translate the wrongly translated words for namespaces "Wikipedia:" , "MediaWiki:" and "Template:" on Punjabi wiki. 'Wikipedia:' and 'MediaWiki:' have spelling problems but 'Template:' is completely translated wrong as ਨਮੂਨਾ: which is the Punjabi word for 'sample'. Please send me the page links or any way you can help. Thanks. Tari Buttar (talk) 10:08, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Tari Buttar (talk)10:08, 6 August 2012

Hi,

Sorry, I only noticed this question now.

To translate namespace names go to the page Special:AdvancedTranslate. In the "⧼translate-magic-module⧽" list select "⧼translate-magic-namespace⧽". Then press "⧼translate-magic-submit⧽", and follow the instructions.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)12:06, 19 August 2012

Thanks, I translated/corrected but still I couldn't found one of the namespaces named "Wikipedia:" Where it is? Can you give some direct link?

Tari Buttar (talk)13:10, 19 August 2012

This is the one that is called "$1_talk" in the table. "$1" will be replaced by "Wikipedia" ("ਵਿਕਿਪੀਡਿਆ") in Wikipedia, by "Wiktionary" in Wiktionary, etc. You don't have to put "$1" in the beginning of the translation. Put "$1" wherever it fits in Punjabi.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)13:16, 19 August 2012

Sorry, I didn't get the last two lines. As of previous lines: I can't translate $1 so how to translate the namespace ਵਿਕਿਪੀਡਿਆ: that is wrongly spelled and also the same wrong spellings have been used for the logo.

Tari Buttar (talk)01:21, 20 August 2012

If I understand correctly, "ਵਿਕਿਪੀਡਿਆ" is the word "Wikipedia" and it looks the same as in the logo. Do you want to change the name of the site? It is possible, but it is not done on translatewiki.net, and you should discuss it in the Community Portal of the Punjabi Wikipedia first.

Or are you talking about the "Wikipedia talk" namespace (ਵਿਕਿਪੀਡਿਆ ਚਰਚਾ)?

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)16:54, 30 August 2012

"ਵਣਗੀ" is sample in Punjabi, ਨਮੂਨਾ has multiple uses and can be used for "template" too.

Hello, could you please fix your signature so that it links to your userpage? (Removing any customisation seems what you need to get the result you want.)

Nemo (talk)06:40, 1 September 2012

Please clear, What change you actually want me to do?

Tari Buttar (talk)01:27, 2 September 2012

You could e.g. uncheck Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link to your user page) on Special:preferences to get the link work again.

Category-article-count

Hi,

Can you please translate the message Category-article-count (“{{PLURAL:$2|This category contains only the following page.|The following {{PLURAL:$1|page is|$1 pages are}} in this category, out of $2 total.}}”)? It's quite important and currently it's definitely broken.

Thank you.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)05:37, 5 August 2012

Category translation done, please check if okay?

Tari Buttar (talk)09:46, 5 August 2012

Your translation is probably OK, but you wrote it at the English page and not in Punjabi, so I had to revert it. Please write it at the correct page: MediaWiki:Category-article-count/pa.

You probably saw an incorrect URL because your interface language is English. Please change your interface language to Punjabi in the preferences.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)09:51, 5 August 2012

Did you mean the language in "user profile" preferences (above signature setting)? Tari Buttar (talk) 10:47, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Tari Buttar (talk)10:47, 5 August 2012

First of all, it looks like now you translated the correct string. It will be visible on category pages in the Punjabi within a couple of days.

By preferences I mean your user preferences, which you can change by clicking "My preferences" near your username at the top of the page. Go there and select "pa - ਪੰਜਾਬੀ" in the "Language" menu. It will help you to work here, because you will see how the interface gradually changes to English as you are translating.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)10:51, 5 August 2012

Didn't get you much. Please use simple english and always try to answer clearly according to my questions, please. For example as I asked , "did you mean the language in......"

you should first response to the question mark with yes or no then the the further talk. (sorry, sometimes I confused). Tari Buttar (talk)

Parameters such as $1

Hi,

Thank you for making all these translations to Punjabi!

In the edit summary of {{msg-mw}} error: Message key starts with namespace: "MediaWiki:MediaWiki:Welcomecreation" you asked whether the "$1" is needed. Yes, it is needed: If it appears in the English text, then it must appear in the Punjabi text, too.

Please read the page Translating:Interface_translation, especially the section "Parameters_in_messages".

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)05:20, 5 August 2012

Where to start

Hi,

On this site people translate the interface of MediaWiki to their languages. MediaWiki is the software on which Wikipedia runs. (There are also other projects here and not just MediaWiki, but we'll get to that soon.)

There are many messages that are not translated to Punjabi or are translated incorrectly. Here's how you can see them:

  • Click "ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਟੂਲ" under the logo on the side bar.
  • Click "MediaWiki" in the table.
  • You will see a table of untranslated messages. The narrow column shows the message "key" - it's a link to the message. Click the link.
  • The English message appears in the "Message definition" box. There is also a "Information about message" box, which may often help you to translate the message correctly. Translate the message from English to Punjabi and click save.
  • Some messages are "FUZZY". This means that they were translated to Punjabi, but after that the English messages was changed, so they have to be updated. Please update them. In fact, it's easy to start from them.

There are over a thousand messages that need translation. That's quite a lot, but you'll see that once you start, it goes pretty quickly.

If you have any questions, please ask at the Support page (you can also ask me directly).

Thank you for your help! Good luck!
