Activate new language: Efik (efi)

Hello. The Efik Wikipedia project has been initiated in Incubator. We would like to start translating the important messages into Efik language here. The language uses Latin script and write LTR. Please help activate it. Thanks.

I fixed the Portal:Efi to properly create it (but it's still marked disabled; only a site admin can do that, not me).

You can see If the language is really enabled by looking at the bottom of this page: Special:ActiveLanguages/efi. A site admin will inform you by replying in this thread if he accepts your request.

I see you've registered this language in your user page, but with little knowledge of it, and the initial project in Incubator is still almost empty without more "participants" than apparently you.

Do you know other people that will really translate to that language with enough knowledge? If so inform them so they can register for an account on this wiki and cooperate.

I suggest you experiment with the early incubator wiki (which is where you'll testbed the language itself, to have a good idea of which kind of linguistic support you need; you're not required to design a full portal with many templates, just see how some common pages like documentation/help could be translated and supported, and request assistance if needed from developers, e.g. for input methods, date and number formats, plural rules, transliteration facilities if needed; as well it can be used to simulate the interface before it is actually translated: those activities don't fit well in translatewiki.net).

And also experiment with the translation interface (in some other language that you know), either here on this wiki, or in wikis that also have translatable pages (e.g. on Wikimedia Meta-Wiki, or Wikimedia Commons, or on MetaWiki wiki: there are tons of documentation/help pages to translate: these translatable pages on these other wikis uses the same technology as here, even if this site is for translating the MediaWiki UI (for its next versions before deployment), and a few other projects for its extensions, or custom softwares: here the translations you make are not immediately "live", they are reviewed and imported later for each external project; this is different from "translatable pages" hosted and published directly on each site by itself.

Thank you for your help. I have corrected my language level to intermediate cos I could speak the language but not as native speaker. I have another native speaker and we would work together on this. He is already registered in Wikimedia incubator as (User:Udoette1). I also plan to get other native speakers on board. I am a native speaker of gungbe(guw) and Nigerian pidgin(pcm) and one of the main contributors to these projects in incubator and translatewiki(I initiated both). I would design the main page of efik Wikipedia whenever I have much time on my side. I trust we could count on you when we have issues here as well. Thanks.

Amir forgot to remove the option that disables the link to the TranslateUI. I did that in Portal:Efi.

And I also updated the few associated categories to remove the "disabled language" banner.

Actions by User:DDPAT

Hello! I wanted to deliver the situation with User:DDPAT. First of all, quality of translation, done by the user in Ukrainian and Russian proved to be defective and incorrect, there were several complaints, even request temporary removal of translation right and actual ban for editing translations on mediawiki. However, it seems like right now DDPAT is engaged in activity of editing translations in languages he has no command of whatsoever. I am talking about these ones: 1, 2, 3 and so on. I have no command of these languages either, they can be okay or they can be completely wrong, so I ask for advice from the community.

Delete page

A while ago I changed my username to a new one because I wanted to delete my old name from the internet for certain reasons. All the discussions done before were changed so that my old name would not appear on google. But there is one that still retains the old version despite having already changed it. Can you delete the next page? it is urgent: https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Thread:User_talk:Navhy/Por_favor,_non_sigas_cambiando_as_traduci%C3%B3ns_sen_consultar&lqt_oldid=81444

I doubt it! [bkm] is "Kom" (in Cameroon), also known as "Bamekon, Bikom, Itangikom, Kong, Nkom"... not "Bassa'a".

May be it is "Basaa (or Bassa, Basa (Cameroon), Mbene)" [bas], which has these listed dialects: Basso, Bakem, Bibeng, Bon, Diboum, Log, Mpo, Ndokama, Ndokbele, Ndokpenda, Nyamtam... See Portal:bas: you can register your user name in this page in the list of translators, and confirm it in the "#babel" box of your user page, so that others will know you are working on it.

Verdy p (talk)17:42, 30 March 2021

It's "bas". I wrote "bkm" by mistake initially, and then corrected it.

Last edit: 14:12, 21 May 2020

Good morning, I apologize in advance for the inconvenience. I am an admin of vec.wiki, I wanted to ask for information. Among the interwiki on the right of the page, by clicking, the names of the languages localized by continent come out. The Venetian language is found correctly on Europe, however it is official and spoken by 5 million people in southern Brazil (South America). I wanted to ask how it could be done to add it to that list too? https://glottolog.org/resource/languoid/id/vene1258 it is said that Vèneto is spoken in Brazil. Thank you very much in advance for your reply and a good job!

Error in en message

I've just done my introductory translations but in one of them I noticed the en message was incorrect as well, MediaWiki:Donate interface-ARS/en

That should be "Argentine peso", not "Argentinian peso." I've translated it into British English correctly (as it's the same in both en-US and en-GB). But I don't have the permissions to edit that message myself.

Mvolz (talk)13:32, 26 April 2019

We've submitted a request to that team to update the message as per your recommendation. Thanks for your contribution.

Most curious user interface. Site disables keyboard. No go. (archived into a thread initially posted in 2012)

I'm a former en/ru/commons editor, came here after seeing Gmeijssen's notice on ru-wiki. Let me tell you, the "usability features" of this site exceeds the worst of expectations.

I'm writing this in an external editor, to be copy-pasted in mediawiki's edit window. Why? because the site disabled typing Latin characters and most of punctuation marks. The OS, of course, switches keyboard layouts as usually, but all Latin characters typed in the window are converted to Cyrillic gibberisch. Even Latin comma is rendered as Cyrillic б. Four tildes are rendered as ЁЁЁЁ. Right, my IP geolocates to Russia, but even Russians need commas... sometimes... they really do. And then there are Chinese, French, ... - just stuck in here. Don't they need commas, too?

Oh, yes, there's a "Language" selector on top. I managed to switch it to English after around ten failed attempts. It turned out that choosing the first meaningful option (US-EN) is a dead end that redirects to all-Russian. The EN-EN worked, thank you.

78.107.117.194 11:12, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Hello, we're very sorry that you found it so difficult to edit, this is not how it's supposed to work. First, this is enabled by default only for languages which have defined an input method, and it can be disabled in the preferences. Second, I've just tried to set my language to Russian (both as a registered and anonymous) editor, and I was able to write normally: what you described happened only if I explicitly set "русская стандартная" instead of "Немецкий" in the "Метод ввода" menu, and I was still able to disable it entirely by unchecking "Для переключения метода ввода (Ctrl-M)". I believe this is how it's supposed to work, perhaps it depends on your browser? Which browser are you using? If it's too hard to use this website, you can file it as a bug on bugzilla:. Thank you, Nemo (talk) 20:51, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Is there a page to ask questions?

Is there a Support page where to ask questions? Could there be such a page for general questions, and another page for particular questions?

What I mean is that this Support page ought to be divided in two separate sections: one for general problems and another for questions concerning a single word or translation of a single message. I don't think the current situation is beneficial to anyone.

Pxos (talk)11:20, 27 March 2015

I am well aware that I am currently flooding this page with a pile of stuff that I had to postpone for several months lacking spare time. That makes me unhappy, too. On the other hand - I shall have to revert to my normal frequency of editing in few days, so it is going to be over soon.

Purodha Blissenbach (talk)13:23, 27 March 2015

The flooding itself is not a major problem. The fact that Liquid Threads or something else prevents the easy solution of splitting this "Village Pump" into two or more sections, is a nuisance. There should be multiple sections for various questions.

Pxos (talk)17:13, 29 March 2015

The TWN core staff won't consider reverting to wikitext discussions.

Could you clarify the use case you have in mind? Did you open some discussion here which you feel could have benefited from a different organisation of the talk page? Is there some discussion which you would have liked to follow but were unable to?

Nemo (talk)17:27, 29 March 2015

Splitting is not currently possible, but I proposed a fix some years ago: phabricator:T40635.

Nemo (talk)15:02, 27 March 2015

This is now done, for several projects. I hope there will be several benefits; one of them is that Support should soon be way less busy and easier for normal users to use for discussion etc.

Instead of simply removing localized texts, why not make this page a normal translateable page? After all, there are only a few keystroke that need translation.

Purodha Blissenbach (talk)11:29, 17 May 2015

I'm not aware of LiquidThreads working in translatable pages.

Nemo (talk)12:05, 17 May 2015

Neither am I, but why not. If I had the right to do so, I had long given it a try making a new page in my user name space translatable and allowing Liquidthreads on it. If it works: fine; else: bad luck. :-)

Translating top section of Support

I noticed that the topsection of the SUpport page is not translated. Would it be possible to include this in a message (similar to MediaWiki:Bw-request-translator-intro/en) or would another solution be better? Also if an admin can delete Support/top it would be appreciated (with lt i guess there is less need to separate the header from the discussions}.

Lokal Profil (talk)08:21, 6 August 2014

I've changed the support page to include page support/xyz for interface language code xyz as its into, if that page exists. Otherwise, it sticks to English.

Subcategories for Category:Open support requests for MediaWiki

Considering the size of MediaWiki (plus it's various extensions) it is perhaps unsurprising that Category:Open support requests for MediaWiki is huge. My thinking is that if we had subcategories for this (an thus for {{Support}}) then it might be easier to get/force the team responsible for the components to e.g. subscribe to the RSS feed for that category.

Responding to feedback is something we require of new projects so it seems like a disconnect that something similar is not the case for MediaWiki extensions, especially the ones being developed within WMF.

Lokal Profil (talk)09:05, 22 August 2014

The category is not particularly big currently; it's usually above 100 items. In practice teams as such don't follow anything, only individuals do; and for each component there are different individuals with different preferences. Support/Open requests is a more useful view.

Nemo (talk)11:07, 22 August 2014

Thanks for the Support/Open requests link. It is useful but from it I'm guessing that no notification is triggered unless you are added as the responsible dev in the Support-template. If there is a good master list for who the default dev is for different extensions then that would be easy to add but I would e.g. have no clue whom to assign as dev for the Echo-messages.

The main point remains though that there should be some process by which the responsible teams (thinking mainly WMF) get notified about issues relating to their extensions. Otherwise the solution is the current one where forgotten requests here end up becoming bugs in bugzilla just so that they get some action. That seems like a somewhat backwards process, not to mention that it results in potentially months of delay whilst the messages in question are untranslated or mistranslated.

Lokal Profil (talk)16:15, 27 August 2014

Bugzilla is the place where you find the persons that are responsible for handling bugs in many extensions or areas of MediaWiki. Tt is a bit unfortunate that you have to open a bug (i.e. rewrite or copy & paste most of what you aready entered here) in order to really reach them. --Purodha Blissenbach (talk) 10:49, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
